    PROFESSIONALDANCE

    9 September – 8 December 2017

  • Autumn Term 2017 Welcome to our always surprising and inspiring professional programme – full ofnewly embodied ideas and opportunities for the dancers and makers of the nation.

This term we have a true legend coming to visit and personally the first and sopossibly the most influential guru of mine: The great Lindsay Kemp will be in thehouse in October. Lindsay was mentor to many including Kate Bush and DavidBowie – the latter even came to stay at the mad and glorious basement flat inDrummond Street here in Edinburgh whilst writing his album Hunky Dory.

I was scullery maid and gin pourer but also a devoted student of Lindsay’s. Hisshows were like something from another fabulous, glittering, over-made-up planet.A planet I’ve been visiting regularly ever since! As well as this amazing news, wewill be welcoming our new DEBS (graduate dancers) who will be mentored by Al Seed, one of our great Scottish artists of physical theatre. Add to this up to twofree classes a week for professionals and countless residency showings on Fridays, and it all starts to add up to a pretty awesome Autumn.

As always, I’ll remind you that our Friday afternoon showings by companies inresidence are open to all and free to attend. I hope to see you there, as well as |atthe Lindsay Kemp-led autumn showcase and our Youth Dance showcase at theTraverse in November.

It is a privilege to welcome the legendary Lindsay Kemp to Dance Base.

Much has been said about his influence on seminal artists such as Bowie and Bush but we alsoacknowledge Lindsay’s ground-breaking work over the decades. Works that have radically, glamorouslyand intensely changed ways of seeing theatre, dance, art, life and gender. It was in the same Grassmarketthat is now home to Dance Base that the exquisite and high camp classics such as Flowers, The Maids andthe Turquoise Pantomimewere premiered, in the first wild manifestation of the Traverse Theatre.

Morag’s life was changed as a 15 year-old dance student at the Theatre School of Dance and Dramain the West End run by William Mowat Thomson, when Lindsay flew into the studio accompanied by dancer The Incredible Orlando (aka Jack Birkett), filling it with charisma, visceral life and colour andoutrageous behaviour.

Morag was invited to be part of that most outrageous and innovative company, and now, several decadeslater, Lindsay’s homecoming is rightly here at Dance Base, and now you can spend an entire week with theman Kate Bush dedicated the song Moving to. She said of him “It was incredible, I’d never seen anythinglike it, I really hadn’t. And I felt if it was possible to combine that strength of movement with the voice, then maybe it would work, and that’s what I’ve tried to do.”

Brian Eno – “Lindsay was, is and always has been extraordinary.”

Sir Alec Guinness stated “Lindsay Kemp is a great, repeat, great artist.”

Lindsay is joined in the studio by the Italian ballet dancer Daniela Maccari, who will embody someof Lindsay’s vision during the week and is essential to the process.

More details of both artists can be found on the website.

A Glimpse of Flesh and Blood Rob Heaslip DanceA Glimpse of Flesh and Blood is where dance, vocals, music, design and a mound of confetti reinterpret folk theatre to telltales of rituals of birth and death in Gaelic Culture.

Rob Heaslip creates a collision of popular and folk culture to create a tale of collective-memory and consciousness.

The performers are a collection of ever-shifting biographies gathered in a small space. They are a composer, a dramaturg,a designer, dancers, and vocalists working to reinvent time honoured traditions.

Roberta is developing new work for both digital and live performance spaces. Across these contexts, she’s looking at both similarities and differences between the experience of the performer and the audience.

She says, “In my choreographic practice, I’m trying to explore and sculpt somatic experience and the poetic body whilstalso trying to be conscious of how work is received. I would like to further explore the inner process of the dancer, sensations, biomechanics, emotion, as well as the audience’s perspective, how work translates, dramaturgy, thereading/engagement experience of the audience. Overall, I’d like to be more empathetic towards both performers and audiences and look at how this understanding affects my choreographic practice.”

Himalaya is a solo work that stands for my comeback onstage after a long while. It is like coming back home, comingback to movement research and at the same time it is a way to explore new practices. I would like to investigate theconcept of mountain as a fact, with its opposites: the airy top and the earthly base. Himalaya is inspired by the ‘Mountain’as a universal archetype of what is sacred. Ever since the most ancient shamanic traditions, it has been the axis that setsdirections in the organised space and connects the three worlds: divine, human, and the underworld. The climb to thetop is the heart of every undertaking, and the connection between the base and the top is like closing the loop. This workwill investigate how a choreography can turn into a ritual, using music scores by composers of the 20th century.

Untitled Colin PooleThis residency is led by choreographer Colin Poole incollaboration with dance artist Charlie Morrissey. Together weare exploring ideas around identity and trauma. This researchcomes at a time of political uncertainty, Brexit, Trump, therefugee crisis and fears with regard to the 'Other'. Situatedwithin this context we will explore how dance making sitswithin these concerns. We will investigate the nature of ourresponsibilities as artists and whether art has somethingunique to contribute to the wider conversation.

    RESIDENCY 11 – 14 DECEMBER

Associate Artist Research Luke Pell and Kitty FedorecSelkie Was a Sea Witch (or another dance from a white cis male, why bother?)

Selkie was a Sea Witch. His fleece was white as snow. A couple of queers getting themselves in a fankle with sticky, slippery questions about going solo, oppression, authorship, autonomy, autism, ableism and choreography.

From tall tales to tool use and tall tool users Luke Pell and long termcollaborator Kitty Fedorec are at the beginning of something yet to take its shape.

In a shame shed use of alliteration, nursery rhyme and nonsense poetry, mythsand magics, folklore and science fictions, enchantment and entanglements, hybridity and hydrologic they will spend a small spell of daze, breaking binaries, teetering into transformations, skin steeling, soft lovings, the casual andcausality.

Muse the rider – rather than the ridden – and their poet writhe about with messybodies and the wet stuff that lets us know we are alive.

Paul Michael Henry and Penny Chivas A dance on film exploratory residency by PaulMichael Henry and Penny Chivas.

This residency follows an initial film project by Pauland Penny entitled The Distance between my Eyes and the Back of My Head, made in 2016 and recently selected forPerth Dance Festival (Screen Awards). This was a collaboration between Paul, Penny, their bodies, the environment onlocation at a disused farmhouse, and film technology. We were excited by what we started to discover during it (eventhough it was done over one day and improvised on minimum budget), and we’re using the Dream Time residency toproperly research the possibilities for collaboration into dance on film.

    New Work

Al Seed Al will use this residency to build a physical character which will then form the foundation for a future, full-length work ofdance-theatre. Al's inroad into this character is the figure of theoutcast-giant, a figure common to mythology and fairytales aswell as popular culture. Al will explore how motifs of gigantism

and being ‘out of scale/place’ play out in reference to his own physicality and movement vocabularies, and in relation toa variety of source materials.

Company class I Thursday 23 November I 10.00 – 11.30In keeping with the nature of the work Al will be conducting for his Dream Time residency, this class will blurthe distinctions between dance and movement technique, devising skills, and improvisation. The class hastwo aims: to be fun; and to provide participants of all levels and backgrounds with a clear and simple set oftools with which to devise physical performance of all kinds. Key areas of focus will include: ‘listening’ as afundamental performance tool, performance as game, spatial dynamics, and the physical mechanics of groupmovement.
