THE COLLEGE YAU'iCY S'JP:EY

Each May tl-ie office of Special Higher education Programs at 'ACHE conductsthe College Vacancy Survey among institutions of postse:ohoary education inthe 13 western states.* WICHE polls the offices of Admissions and Recordsin order to determine the location and number of vacancies, fresnmen andtransfer students, for the followino Fall term.

Tne Survey is designed to provide a service to the public as well as tothe institutions. By compil'ng, publishing, and distriouting the informationreceived from the schools during the poll, WICHE enables students and would-Le-students seeking admission to locate and apply to institutions still havingvacancies. Similarly, institutions are able to receive applicants in order tofill otherwise empty spaces in their student bodies.

In the current survey, 447 institutions were polled; of this number, 256 schoolsresponded (57.6,). Responding institutions reported 129,778 openings, in termsof actual numerical estimates. Please remember that this final total, as wellas the totals given for individual states, will represent minimum openings only. The trend toward "open admissions" policies** is increasing among westerncolleges and universities. In the current survey, 81 two- and four-year schoolsindicated that they employ such a policy with respect to enrollment. We were

able to assign numerical estimates toward arriving at state vacancy totals onlywhen they were given by the institutions. But most open admissions policiesdid not allow for numerical estimates. hence state totals are minimums.

Please see footnotes, following the data in chart format, to find thoseinstitutions that nave stated a policy in "open admissions."

GUIDELINES FOR USING THE SURVEY

Please read the following information to facilitate your use of the Survey.

1. Categories: Colleges and universities are listed alphabetically bystate and are divided into two- and four-year categories within each state.

Vacancies are reported for both freshmen and transfer students. Within

each of these divisions, vacancies are specified for commuter and dormitory

students.

*WICHE states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho,Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

**The definition of "open admissions" may vary slightly among institutions. It does, however, most often refer to policies that expand access in education, allowing anyone with a high school diploma or its equivalent to be admitted tothe institution. (Yung-mei Tsai and Paul Wing, September 1972).
