� RynekJest to centralny punkt gliwickiej Starówki,prezentującej do dziś średniowieczny układzabudowy. DZIEJE mIASTA

Osadnictwo w rejonie Gliwic poja-wiło się już w schyłkowym paleolicie(ok. 9-8 tys. l. p. n. e.), o czym świad-czą m.in. wykopaliska w Ligocie Za-brskiej, Sośnicy, Szobiszowicach,Wójtowej Wsi i Dzierżnie, ale udoku-mentowane dzieje miasta i osad,które obecnie znajdują się w jegoobrębie, zaczynają się w XIII w.Wówczas też w miejscu dzisiejszychGliwic funkcjonowała osada handlo-wa na szlaku Wrocław-Kraków, któ-ra przed 1276 r. otrzymała od księciaopolskiego Władysława prawa miej-skie. Oprócz handlu, gliwiczanie zaj-mowali się rzemiosłem, m.in. pro-dukcją i sprzedażą piwa orazchmielu. Średniowieczne miastootoczone było wałami ziemnymi,okolonymi fosą, zasilaną z rzekiOstropki. Ich dawny przebieg wy-znaczają dzisiejsze ulice Dolnychi Górnych Wałów.

� Market SquareThe central point of Gliwice Old town, presentingto this day the medieval building structure. Themain building is the Town Hall, around whichone can admire tenement houses with arcadesbuilt between the 15th and 17th centuries. Thecharacteristic place in the Market Square is thefountain with the sculpture of Neptune designedby Johannes Nietzsche. The Market Square is thefavorite meeting place for the inhabitants andtourists alike. Numerous cafés and galleriescreate a pleasant atmosphere. This is also theplace of numerous artistic events.

� Marktplatz (Ring)Den zentralen Punkt der Altstadt von Gliwice,deren mittelalterlicher Grundriss bis heute erhal-ten blieb, bildet der Marktplatz (Ring). Około 1�31 r. zbudowano muryobronne z dwiema bramami: By-tomską (Białą) i Raciborską (Czarną).Gliwice z okolicą od 1281 r. stanowi-ły część piastowskiego Księstwa By-tomskiego, a w l. 1322-13�2 nawetstolicę udzielnego Księstwa Gliwic-kiego, rządzonego przez księcia Zie-mowita (Siemowita).

Po śmierci ostatniego Piasta by-tomskiego w 135� r. Księstwo By-tomskie, a wraz z nim także Gliwice,podzielono między książąt cieszyń-skich i oleśnickich.

W latach 1�29-1�31 miasto na krót-ko było siedzibą oddziału husytów,dowodzonego przez Michała Kory-butowicza. Od 1526 r., wraz z całymŚląskiem, Gliwice znalazły się pod ce-sarskim berłem Habsburgów.

� Gliwice Music TheatreIn its present form it has beenfunctioning since 2001, combin-ing many years’ traditions of theSilesian Operetta and the MusicalTheatre in Gliwice. � Gliwicki Teatr MuzycznyW dzisiejszej postaci funkcjonuje od 2001roku, łącząc wieloletnie tradycje OperetkiŚląskiej oraz Teatru Muzycznego w Gliwi-cach. Prócz światowych hitów operetko-wych, w jego repertuarze znajdują sięrównież musicale, spektakle tańca współ-czesnego i baletowego oraz baśnie mu-zyczne. Na deskach teatru występują znaniartyści scen polskich i światowych.


W roku 1558 cesarz Ferdynand prze-kazał je wraz z dobrami zamkowymiw dzierżawę Fryderykowi von Zet-tritz (Cetryczowi). Niedługo potem,w czasie wojny trzydziestoletniej, Gli-wice kilkakrotnie były obleganei zdobywane (m. in. w 1623 r. złupili jelisowczycy, 1626 r. miasto obroniłosię przed duńskimi wojskami ErnestaMansfelda, ale w 16�5 r. zdobyły jewojska szwedzkie gen. Torstensona).W 1683 r. na krótko zatrzymał sięw Gliwicach, w drodze pod Wiedeńkról Jan III Sobieski.W XVII i XVIII w. z miasta typowohandlowo-rzemieślniczego, żyjące-go z produkcji i handlu piwem, Gli-wice stały się ośrodkiem sukiennic-twa, które upadło po wojnachśląskich między Prusami a Austrią.W wyniku tych wojen Gliwicez większą częścią Górnego Śląskaw 17�1 r. zostały włączone do Kró-lestwa Prus, do utworzonego po-wiatu toszecko-gliwickiego.Od końca XVIII w. zaczął się w Gliwi-cach rozwijać przemysł. W owymczasie dyrektorem Wyższego Urzę-du Górniczego we Wrocławiu był hr.Fryderyk Wilhelm Reden (1752-1815), nazywany „ojcem górnoślą-skiego przemysłu”.

� Radiostacja Gliwice – OddziałMuzeum w GliwicachZbudowana z drewna modrzewiowego w roku 1935.To najwyższa tego typu konstrukcja drewniana w Eu-ropie (wysokość 111 m). W 1939 r. stała się miejscemprowokacji gliwickiej, która dała początek II wojnieświatowej. Obecnie jest to oddział Muzeum z wy-stawą zabytkowych nadajników radiowych i sprzętutelekomunikacyjnego.

� Gliwice Radio StationDepartment of the Museumin GliwiceMade of larch in the year 1935, it is the highestwooden construction of the type in Europe (111 m).The place of the German provocation in 1939, whichpreceded the outbreak of World War II. � Sender Gleiwitz - Museum inGliwiceDer aus Lärchenholz erbaute Sendeturm stammt ausdem Jahre 1935 und ist mit seinen 111 Metern diehöchste Holzkonstruktion dieser Art in Europa. 1939begann mit dem inszenierten Überfall einerSondereinheit der SS auf den Radiosender, der sog.„Gleiwitzer Provokation“, der Zweite Weltkrieg.Heutzutage beherbergt der Gebäudekomplex eineMuseumsabteilung, in der alte Sende- undTelekommunikationsanlagen präsentiert werden.

Z jego inicjatywy uruchomiono Hu-tę Gliwicką (a właściwie – Królew-ską Odlewnię Żeliwa – KöniglicheEisengießerei in Gleiwitz), powiąza-ną ściśle z królewską Kopalnią Węgla„Królowa Luiza”w Zabrzu oraz Kana-łem Kłodnickim jako drogą trans-portu surowców i produktów.

Po doprowadzeniu do miasta KoleiGórnośląskiej, w 18�5 r. w Gliwicachzaczęły powstawać kolejne zakładyhutnicze, mechaniczne, maszyno-we i chemiczne.W 18�8 r. wrocławska rodzina ku-piecka Caro rozpoczęła w Łabę-dach budowę Huty „Hermina”,a dwadzieścia lat później SalomonHuldschinsky zbudował w Gliwi-cach walcownię rur. W 1852 r. Wil-helm Hagenscheidt zbudował Fa-brykę Drutu i Gwoździ, działałyfabryki kotłów „Leinveber und Co.”i „Oberschlesische Kesselwerke B.Meyer”, fabryka maszyn AdolfaHenniga, huta szkła w Nowej Wsi,zakłady chemiczne„Gleiwitzer Che-mische Fabrik Dr. Hiller”, zakładyszamotowe„Stettiner Chamotte Fa-brik AG”, liczne cegielnie, tartaki,młyny, zakłady przemysłu spożyw-czego.

� Zamek PiastowskiDawny dwór Cetrycza, nazywanyZamkiem Piastowskim, jest dziś jed-nym z oddziałów Muzeum w Gliwi-cach. Przed wiekami pełnił on równieżfunkcję arsenału, więzienia i folwarku.W okolicy znajdują się zachowanedo dziś pozostałości średniowiecz-nych murów obronnych.

W 1901 założono Kopalnię„Gliwice”(pierwsze wydobycie w 1913 r.),a w 1917 r. wydobyto pierwszą tonęwęgla w Kopalni „Sośnica”.

Równocześnie miasto zaczęło sięrozwijać cywilizacyjnie. Na począt-ku XIX w. zasypano fosy, zniwelo-wano wały miejskie i wyburzonomury obronne. Powstały nowe ulicei kwartały zabudowy na północ i za-chód od średniowiecznego cen-trum. W 1816 r. założono w Gliwi-cach pierwsze gimnazjum i liczneszkoły powszechne. W 1826 r. otwar-to pierwszą drukarnię, później bank(1851) oraz gazownię (185�).W 189� r. Gliwice (wraz z Bytomiem)jako pierwsze na Górnym Śląskuotrzymały kolej miejską – tramwaje(początkowo trakcji parowej, a od1898 r. – elektryczne). W związkuz postępującą po roku 1897 r.(otwarcie elektrowni w Zabrzu)elektrybkacją przemysłowej częściGórnego Śląska, w Gliwicachw 1897 r. założono spółkę OEW(Oberschlesische Elektrizitäts We-rke). W 1901 r. doprowadzono domiasta wodę z ujęcia Zawada,a w 1906 r. założono kanalizację.

� Kościół pw. PodwyższeniaKrzyża ŚwiętegoW 1623 roku reformaci wznieśli w tymmiejscu klasztor i kościół w formach baro-kowych pod wezwaniem św. Krzyża.W 1921 roku klasztor przejęli oo. Redemp-toryści. Wkrótce kościół został przez nichprzebudowany i powiększony. Do zachod-niej strony korpusu nawowego przylegaczworoboczny budynek klasztorny z we-wnętrznym wirydarzem. Z 22 na 23 sierp-nia 1683 roku zatrzymał się w klasztorzeJan III Sobieski, spiesząc z odsieczą na Wie-deń.

� Exaltation of the holy CrossChurchThe Reformation advocates erected apriory and a church here in the Baroqueforms in 1623 under the name of HolyCross. In 1921 the church was taken overby the Redemptorist Order Priory. Thechurch was soon rebuilt and extended. Tothe west side of the nave body thereadheres a quadrilateral cloister building,with an internal cloister garth. From 22to 23 August 1683 King Jan III Sobieski hada brief sojourn in the order priory, while onhis way to relieve the besieged city ofVienna.

� Kreuzerhöhungskirche1623 erbauten an diesem Ort dieReformaten ein barockes Kloster und eineKirche, die den Namen Heiliges Kreuzerhielt. 1921 übernahmen die Re-demptoristen das Kloster; sie bauten dasGebäude um und erweiterten es. An dasKirchenschiff grenzt von westlicher Seitedas viereckige Klostergebäude mit einemInnengarten. Am 22./23. August 1683bezog in diesem Kloster König Johann III.Sobieski Quartier, der zum Entsatz der vonden Türken belagerten Stadt Wien eilte.

Pod koniec XIX w. w Gliwicach dzia-łało kilka banków. W mieście inten-sywnie toczyło się życie społeczno--kulturalne. Równolegle działałystowarzyszenia niemieckie (Filoma-tów 1866, loża masońska 1887, Gór-nośląskie Towarzystwo Muzeal-ne 1905) i polskie (TowarzystwoGimnastyczne„Sokół”, TowarzystwoŚw. Alojzego 1896, TowarzystwoPolskie„Harmonia”1898), wychodzi-ła prasa niemiecka (przede wszyst-kim„Der Oberschlesische Wandererod 1828, „Die Gegenwart” od 18�8,„Die Oberschlesische Volksstimme”od 1875) i polska („Opiekun Katolic-ki” od 1898, „Głos Śląski” od 1903).W 1899 r. założono Teatr Miejski„Victoria”, a w 1905 r. – muzeum.

Po plebiscycie i podziale GórnegoŚląska w 1922 r. miasto pozostałow granicach Niemiec. Pod koniec lat20. XX w. pojawiła się koncepcjautworzenia górnośląskiego Trójmia-sta, obejmującego Bytom, Gliwicei Zabrze, jednak z powodu świato-wego kryzysu gospodarczego niedoszło do jej realizacji. Mimo kryzy-su, w latach trzydziestych Gliwicerozwinęły się na niespotykaną do-tychczas skalę.

Budowa portu lotniczego, moder-nizacja i przebudowa węzła kolejo-wego, podjęta budowa Kanału Gli-wickiego i autostrady, zmieniławizerunek miasta.

W przededniu wybuchu II wojny świa-towej grupa funkcjonariuszy specjal-nego oddziału SS pod dowództwempor. Naujocksa, udająca powstańcówśląskich, opanowała zespół nadaw-czy radiostacji gliwickiej przy ul. Tar-nogórskiej. Akt ten miał stanowić je-den z pretekstów uzasadniającychwywołanie przez Hitlera II wojny świa-towej i do historii najnowszej prze-szedł jako tzw.„prowokacja gliwicka”.

W czasie II wojny światowej cała go-spodarka nastawiona była na pro-dukcję wojskową. Mężczyzn powo-łano do wojska, dlatego przy każdejwiększej fabryce istniały obozy pra-cy, a w mieście i okolicy działały � b-lie obozu Auschwitz III Monowice.

BUDYNEK URZĘDU MIEJSKIEGO

� Budynek Urzędu MiejskiegoTo jeden z najbardziej okazałych bu-dynków w mieście. Zbudowano gow latach 30. XX wieku jako„Haus Obe-rschlesien”, najnowocześniejszy hotelw tej części Europy. W styczniu 19�5roku został spalony przez Armię Czer-woną, a po wojnie odbudowany.W chwili obecnej jest siedzibą władzmiasta.

� Municipal Office BuildingOne of the most impressive buildings inthe city. Built in the 1930s as ’Haus

Oberschlesien’, the mostmodern hotel in this part ofEurope. Burnt down inJanuary 19�5 by the RedArmy and rebuilt after thewar. It is presently the seat ofthe municipal authorities.

� Das Gebäude derStadtverwaltungAls eines der prächtigstenGebäude in der Stadt ent-stand das Gebäude in den1930er Jahren als „Haus

Oberschlesien”, das zu da-maliger Zeit modernsteHotel in diesem Teil Euro-pas. 19�5 von den Rotar-misten niedergebrannt,wurde das Gebäude nachdem Zweiten Weltkriegwiederaufgebaut und zumStadtamt umfunktioniert.

Trzeba też nadmienić, że już w 1939r. utworzono w pobliskich Nieboro-wicach obóz przejściowy dla aresz-towanych żołnierzy polskich, po-wstańców śląskich i działaczypolskich organizacji.Wojska radzieckie zdobyły mia-sto 2�.01.19�5 r., a po konferencjipoczdamskiej znalazło się onow granicach Polski.

Współczesne Gliwice są jednymz najprężniej rozwijających sięośrodków konurbacji górnośląskiej,śląskim „technopolis” (od 2005 r.Gliwice są członkiem World Techno-polis Association, organizacji sku-piającej miasta stawiające na rozwójnowych technologii, z prężnymośrodkiem akademickim i nauko-wym).

TEATR W RUINACh

� Teatr w RuinachW 1890 r. zbudowano w tym miejscuolbrzymi kompleks kulturalno-rozryw-kowy. Na jego terenie działał równieżTeatr Miejski„Victoria”. Był to największyi najbardziej reprezentacyjny obiekttego typu na Górnym Śląsku. W 19�5 r.został spalony przez żołnierzy radziec-kich. Obecnie, utrzymywany jako stałaruina, jest jednym z najciekawszychobiektów kulturalnych w regionie i słu-ży prezentowaniu niestandardowychprzedsięwzięć artystycznych.

THE HISTORY OF GLIWICE

Settlements in the vicinity of Gliwiceappeared as early as in late Paleolith(ca. 9-8 thousand years B.C.), which canbe conbrmed with e.g. excavations inLigota Zabrska, Sośnica, Szobiszowice,Wójtowa Wieś and Dzierżno; howeverthe documented history of the townand settlements which presently be-long to its territory begin in the 13th

century. At that time in the placewhere Gliwice is located today therewas a trade settlement functioning onthe trade route Wrocław – Kraków,which before 1276 was granted withmunicipal rights from Władysław, thePrince of Opole. Apart from trade, Gli-wice citizens were engaged in crafts-manship, e.g. production and sales ofbeer and hop. The medieval townwas surrounded with earthen em-bankments and a moat fed from theOstropka river. Their former course isindicated by the today streets of Dol-nych Wałów and Górnych Wałów.

Around 1�31 fortibcations were builtwith two gates: the Bytom (White)Gate and the Racibórz (Black) Gate.Since 1281 Gliwice and its surroundingsconstituted a part of the Piast Duchy ofBytom, and in the period 1322-13�2 thetown was even the capital of the so-vereign Gliwice Duchy, governed byPrince Ziemowit (Siemowit).

After the death of the last Bytom Piastin 135� the Bytom Duchy, and Gliwicewith it, was divided between theCieszyn and Oleśnica Princes. In theperiod 1�29-1�31 for a short timethe town was a seat of a troop of Hus-sites, commanded by Michał Kory-butowicz. Since 1526 together withthe whole Silesia, Gliwice found itselfunder the imperial sceptre of theHabsburgs. In 1558 Emperor Ferdi-nand leased it together with the cas-tle property to Friedrich von Zettritz(Cetrycz). Soon after that, during theThirty Years’ War, Gliwice was be-sieged and conquered several times(e.g. in 1623 it was plundered by theLisowczycy troops, in 1626 the towndefended itself against the Danisharmy of Ernest Mansfeld, and in 16�5it was conquered by the Swedishtroops under general Torstenson).

In 1683 King Jan III Sobieski stoppedin Gliwice for w while on his way toVienna.

In the 17th and 18th century, from thecity of a typically trade and crafts-manship nature, making a living onthe production and sales of beer, Gli-wice transformed into a centre ofcloth manufacture, which declined af-ter the Silesian wars between Prussiaand Austria. As a result of these wars,in 17�1 Gliwice with a large part ofUpper Silesia was incorporated toPrussia, to the established Toszek-Gliwice county.

At the end of the 18th century indus-try started to develop in Gliwice. Atthat time the director of the State Min-ing Authority in Wrocław was countFriedrich Wilhelm Reden (1752-1815),called“the father of the Upper Silesianindustry”. Upon his initiative the Gli-wice Steelworks (and more preciselythe Royal Cast Iron Foundry –

When the Upper Silesian Railwaysreached Gliwice in 18�5, next steel-works, mechanical, machine andchemical plants were coming intobeing in Gliwice. In 18�8 a Wrocław-based mercantile family Caro beganthe construction of “Hermina” Steel-works in Łabędy, and twenty years la-ter Salomon Huldschinsky construct-ed a pipe rolling mill in Gliwice. In 1852Wilhelm Hagenscheidt constructedthe Wire and Nail Factory; boiler fac-tories“Leinveber und Co.”and“Ober-schlesische Kesselwerke B. Meyer”,Adolf Henning’s machine factory, theglassworks in Nowa Wieś, the chem-ical plant“Gleiwitzer Chemische Fab-rik Dr. Hiller”, the breclay plant “Stet-tiner Chamotte Fabrik AG” were op-erating in the city, as well as numer-ous brickworks, sawmills, mills, food in-dustry plants. In 1901 the “Gliwice”Mine was established (the brst outputin 1913), and in 1917 the brst coal wasextracted in the “Sośnica” Mine.

PAWILON AKWARYSTYCZNY W PALMIARNI MIEJSKIEJ

Simultaneously the city started to de-velop civilisationally. In the early19th century the moats were co-vered, the municipal embankmentswere levelled and the fortificationswere demolished. New streets andquarters came into being to thenorth and west from the medievalcity centre. In 1816 the first grammarschool and numerous primaryschools were established. In 1826 thefirst printing office opened, and nextthe first bank (1851) and gas plant(185�). In 189� Gliwice (togetherwith Bytom) as the first city in UpperSilesia was equipped with a muni-cipal railway – trams (initially thesewere steam traction trams, and since1898 – electric trams). In connectionwith the electrification of the in-dustrial part of Upper Silesia, pro-gressing after the year 1897 (open-ing of the power plant in Zabrze), in1897 the company of OEW (Ober-schlesische Elektrizitäts Werke) wasestablished. In 1901 water was sup-plied to the city from the water intake“Zawada’, and in 1906 the sewagesystem was installed. At the end ofthe 19th century several banks oper-ated in Gliwice. The city enjoyeda buoyant social and cultural life.

German (Philomaths 1866, MasonicLodge 1887, Upper Silesian Muse-um Society 1905) and Polish (“Sokół”Gymnastics Society, St. Aloysius So-ciety 1896,“Harmonia”Polish Society1898) associations operated simulta-neously. German press (most of all“Der Oberschlesische Wanderer”since1828,“Die Gegenwart”since 18�8,“DieOberschlesische Volksstimme” since1875) and Polish press (“Opiekun Ka-tolicki”since 1898,“Głos Śląski”since1903) was published. In 1899 the“Victoria” municipal theatre wasfounded, and in 1905 – a museum.

After the plebiscite and the divisionof Upper Silesia in 1922 the city re-mained in Germany. At the end of the1920s an idea of creating an UpperSilesian tricity comprising Bytom, Gli-wice and Zabrze emerged; however,due to the global economic crisis itwas never implemented. Despite thecrisis, in the 1930s Gliwice deve-loped to the extent never observedbefore. The construction of an airport,the modernisation and reconstructionof the railway hub, the commencedconstruction of the Gliwice Canaland the motorway, changed the im-age of the city.

On the eve of the outbreak of theWorld War II, a group of officers froma special SS troop commanded bylieutenant Naujocks, pretending to beSilesian insurgents, took control of thebroadcasting unit of the Gliwice radiostation at Tarnogórska street. Thisact was to constitute one of the pre-texts justifying the declaration of theWorld War II by Hitler and it wentdown in history as the so-called“Gli-wice provocation”.

During the World War II the wholeeconomy was oriented towards mi-litary production. Men were called toarms, therefore at each major facto-ry there were labour camps, andthere were � branches of the campAuschwitz III Monowice in the city andaround it. It should be mentioned thatas early as in 1939 in the nearbyNieborowice a transit camp for Polishsoldiers, Silesian insurgents and ac-tivists of Polish organisations was es-tablished. The Soviet Army took overthe city on 2� January 19�5 and afterthe decision of the Potsdam confer-ence Gliwice found itself within thePolish territory.

The Gliwice of today is one of the mostbuoyantly developing centres in theUpper Silesian conurbation, the Silesian“technopolis” (since 2005 Gliwice hasbeen the member of the World Tech-nopolis Association, an organisation ofcities with industrial traditions, ad-ministering dynamic academic and sci-entibc centres). The development ofthe city is based on new technologies(I3D, Flytronic), automotive industry(the General Motors plant) and logis-tics (Segro Business Park Gliwice, Tuli-pan Park Gliwice, Diamond BusinessPark Gliwice and Panattoni Park Gli-wice). Since 19�5 Gliwice has alsobeen an important scientibc centre,with the Silesian University of Tech-nology, one of the largest technical uni-versities in Poland, as its cagship. � All Saints ChurchThe oldest temple in the city, erected inthe 15th century in Gothic style. It hasbeautiful baroque interiors and stellarvaults. The church has a hall structure,i.e. it has three equal height vaults. Inthe vaults there are remains of Gothicwalls and ogival portals, indicative ofthe medieval origins of the building. Itis possible to climb the church belfryand admire the city panorama.

DIE GESCHICHTE VON GLIWICE

Obwohl die Gegend von Gliwicebereits in der späten Altsteinzeitbesiedelt war (8.000 – 9.000 Jahre vorChristus), was u.a. Ausgrabungen inLigota Zabrska, Szobiszowice, Wójto-wa Wieś und Dzierżno belegen,stammen die ältesten Urkunden, diedie Geschichte der Stadt Gliwice undihrer heutigen Stadtteile dokumen-tieren, erst aus dem 13. Jahrhundert.An der Stelle der heutigen Stadtbestand damals eine an der Handels-straße Wrocław – Kraków gelegeneHandelssiedlung, die 1276 vomHerzog Wladislaus von Opole dasStadtrecht erhielt. Neben dem Handelgehörte das Handwerk (u.a. Bier-produktion, Bier- und Hopfenverkauf )zu den Hauptbeschäftigungen derBevölkerung. Im Mittelalter war dieStadt von einem Erdwall und einemStadtgraben umgeben. Das Wasser fürden Stadtgraben lieferte der FlussOstropka.

KĄPIELISKO „LEŚNE”Die ehemalige Stadtbefestigung lässtsich heute am Verlauf der StraßenDolnych Wałów und Górnych Wałówerkennen. Um 1�31 wurde die Stadt-mauer samt dem Beuthener (Weißen)und dem Ratiborer (Schwarzen) Torerrichtet. Seit 1281 gehörten Gliwiceund Umgebung zum dem von denPiasten regierten Herzogtum Bytom.Von 1322 bis 13�2 existierte dasselbständige Herzogtum Gliwice, andessen Spitze Herzog Siemowit stand.

Nach dem Tod des letzten BeuthenerHerzogs aus dem Geschlecht derPiasten wurde 135� das HerzogtumBytom und damit auch Gliwice unterdie Herzöge von Cieszyn und Oleśnicageteilt. Von 1�29 bis 1�31 bildete dieStadt kurz den Sitz einer Hussiten-einheit unter Sigmund Korybut. 1526kamen Gliwice und die gesamteRegion Schlesien unter das Zepter derHabsburger. 1558 verpfändete KaiserFerdinand die Stadt und die Schloss-güter an Friedlich Zetritz (Cetrycz).Kurze Zeit später wurde Gliwicewährend des Dreißigjährigen Kriegesmehrmals belagert und erobert (u.a.wurde es 1623 von den Verbänden derpolnischen Lisowczycy ausgeplündert,16�5 von der schwedischen Armee

Der Land-kreis Toszek – Gliwice wurde gebildet.

Überdies erschienen deutsche undpolnische Zeitungen: u.a. „Der Ober-schlesische Wanderer (seit 1828), „DieGegenwart” (18�8), „Die Ober-schlesische Volksstimme”(1875),„Opie-kun Katolicki” (1898), „Głos Śląski”(1903). 1899 wurde das Stadttheater„Victoria“, 1905 das Museum eröffnet.

Nach der Volksabstimmung und derTeilung Oberschlesiens 1922 verbliebdie Stadt bei Deutschland. Ende der1920er Jahre wurde das Dreistädte-einheit-Konzept entwickelt, in dessenRahmen Bytom, Gliwice und Zabrzehätten zu einer einheitlichen Stadtvereinigt werden sollen. Wegen derWeltwirtschaftskrise wurde die Ideejedoch nicht umgesetzt. Trotz der Kriseentwickelte sich Gliwice in den 1930erJahren mit einer bisher nichtbekannten Intensität.

Am Vortage des Zweiten Weltkriegesbesetzten als polnische Aufständischeverkleidete Angehörige einerdeutschen Spezialeinheit unterOberleutnant Naujocks den SenderGliwice an der heutigen UlicaTarnogórska. Damit sollte einpropagandistischer Anlass für denAngriff auf Polen geschaffen werden.Der Vorfall ist als „GleiwitzerProvokation“ in die neuste Geschichteeingegangen.

In der Kriegszeit wurden die Industrie-werke der Stadt völlig auf Rüstungs-produktion umgestellt. Da die meistenMänner eingezogen wurden, gab es anjeder größeren Fabrik ein Arbeitslager.

In Gliwice funktionierten vier Arbeit-slager (Filialen des Lagers Auschwitz IIIMonowitz). Zu erwähnen wäre darüberhinaus, dass im nahen Nieborowice einDurchgangslager für verhaftetepolnische Soldaten, schlesischeAufständische und polnische Aktivistengebildet wurde. Am 2�.01.19�5 wurdedie Stadt von der sowjetischen Armeebesetzt. Infolge der PotsdamerBeschlüsse wurde sie an Polenangeschlossen.Das Gliwice von heute gehört zu densich am schnellsten entwickelndenStädten des oberschlesischenBallungsraumes; es ist das ober-schlesische„Technopolis“ (seit 2005 istGliwice Mitglied der World Techno-polis Association, einer Organisation,der dynamische Universitäts- undWissenschaftszentren mit industriellerTradition angehören).
