Joachim of Fiore was born at Celico, asmall town in the province of Cosenza,in 1130 and died, in the odour of

sanctity, on March the 30th, 1202, atCanale, a small hamlet of Pietrafitta, near Cosenza. His mortal remains weretaken to the Florense Abbey of SanGiovanni in Fiore, in 1226. He was aCistercian abbot of Corazzo in 1177 andof Casamari in 1182, but, a short time

Joachims works had a great vogue in the 13th and 14th centuries.Dante places him in Paradise, Divine Comedy, the twelfth canto, lines ofverse 140/141: il calavrese abate Giovacchino / di spirito profetico dotato. In 1201, Simone Mamistra, feudal master and prince of Fiumefreddo, donated to Joachim a large land, at Badia, on which the abbot, at the

request of Mamistra and with his help, built theabbey of Fonte Laurato. In this abbey church , it issaid, there is a chair which the abbot Joachimused to sit on, every timehe attended churchservices and the readingof the Book of psalms.
