I bouqht a paper from-a boy at the corner ofGeorge Street and continued my way down St. Swithin's Lane.As 1 proceeded I was glancing at the front sheet of mynewspaper, when one of 'the aftendants stationed at th~entrance of New Court held up his hand and from this Iconcluded that the car I have frequently seen leavinq NewCourt about this time was coming out. I stopped at theNorth Side of the entrance to al low the car to pass. Thecar slowed down or stopped at the turn of the corner. Justthen I heard a sharp report which I thought was caused by abursting tyre. I noticed a commotion on the other side ofthe La~e ~nd saw a man move to the centre of the Lane so as

to directly face the car. He had something bright in hishand and t heard one or two more reports ana realised thathe was shooting at someone seated in the car. On theimpulse of the ~oment I stepped into the road and seized his

left armv and my impression is that somecme from the otherside of the road ~t the same time seized, or tried to seize,hold of his right arm. Whether the man fired at that momentor not I cannot say, but my impression is that he did. Hethen turned the revolver on to me and fired. As I wasunable to reach his r~gh~ arm and fearing anoth~r 5ho~ at meI released my hold ot hIm and stepped on one 51de. Ihe man
