Suppose I have a 10­digits lock. The lock has the following rule:

The first digit of the code is the number of appearance of the digit '0' in the password

The second digit of the code is the number of appearance of the digit '1' in the password

The third digit of the code is the number of appearance of the digit '2' in the password

and so on until...

The 10th digit of the password is the number of occurrence of the digit '9' in the password.

9000000000 is wrong that despite they're 9 zeroes (and the first digit is 9 which iscorrect) but the last number is zero which is wrong (because there is 1 nine in the passwordinstead of 0)

A good programmer solves this in 3 minutes. This kind of math question tests 2 skill set: 1.Reading comprehension skill (if you don't read this properly you will run in circle) 2.Analyzing skill

I will not tell exactly the answer, but here is how you deduce it (don't scroll if you don'twant to see the answer)

First thing to realize is that number 9 will never appear how hard you try( as I told you9000000000 is impossible)

Second thing to realize that the number 8 will also never appear how hard you try. Youcan't  do something like 8000000010 because the bolded 0 (the second digit) willconflicted.

Third thing to realize is that number 7 will never appear for the same reason. You can't dosomething like 7X00000100 because you will have conflict with X.

The highest number that can appear is 6 which can be done by trial and error.

There is no math here, point taken. But as I told you, if you don't have good readingcomprehension skill and both analyzing skill, you will need waaay longer than 3 minutes(you either will confused with the question or running in circle making useless approach) 

This question appear in 2015 provincial level of Informatic Olympiad of Indonesia. Duringin­contest I can't answer the question because I was intimidated by the question limit,which somehow screw my analyzing skill and it costs my seat in national level.

Imagine a prison with N prisoners (take a hundred if you want). There are N+1 cells, allisolated, no contact possible. N of the prison cells are the usual cells for the prisoners, thelast 1 is special.

Every night, a single random prisoner will be taken into the special cell. The otherprisoners do not know who and they cannot find out from their cell by any means.

In the special cell there is a lightbulb, which can, of course, be on or off. The bulb hasinfinite light hours, so you don't have to worry about it burning through. Every night,when a prisoner is put in the special cell, the prisoner can decide whether to activate thelamp (if it was off), to deactivate it (if it was on), or leave it alone (if it was either).

At any point in time, a prisoner can step forward towards one of the guards and make theclaim "We've all been in the cell.". If this is correct, they are set free. If it's not, they arekilled (or the process starts over, some punishment, assume the prisoners are not suicidal).

Before this starts, the prisoners get 1 day to discuss amongst themselves how they want toplay this 'game'.

The question to you is to provide a way for the prisoners to win. Find a strategy so thatthey can be 100% certain whether they've all been in there or not (so just waiting 10 yearsand betting 100 lives on the 1 in   parts is not allowed). 

To make it more mathematical, try to find the average length these prisoners stay in prisonbefore your strategy works. You will, most likely, only be able to find an upper bound, butgive it a try anyway.

Note:It took me a few hours to come up with a good strategy when I first heard this puzzle, butthere are multiple solutions.

You and six strangers find yourselves trapped together in a room.

An armed guard enters and informs you that shortly you will each be led to isolatedindividual cells. After you have been separated you will all be assigned one of the 7 coloursof the rainbow. Next, you will be informed, in no particular order, of the colours that wereassigned to the other six people, but not of your own. If any of you are able to correctlyguess their own assigned colour then you will all be set free. However, should none of youcorrectly guess their colour then you will all be thrown into a deep dark pit, never to see arainbow again. You will each have only one attempt to guess your colour.

The guard leaves the room at which point discussion erupts in the group. Someonesuggests you all try to rush the guard when he returns. Another person points out thatthere may be more guards outside the room, or further locked doors, and that someonewould surely get injured (or worse) in such a plan. A third suggests you all should justguess a different colour, then rethinks and proposes instead that you all should guess thesame colour. A fourth counters that there was nothing in the guard’s explanation tosuggest that all 7 colours of the rainbow would be used in the assignment (otherwise youcould just guess the missing colour when you learn of the other six) nor that any of youwill have means of determining the guesses of others before making your own. The fifthstranger is agitated by the notion that someone among you may be a treacherous spy,intent on undoing any strategy you come up with, so the situation is hopeless. However,the sixth reasons that the group cannot afford to think like that and everyone must assumethey can trust one another. The group turns to you, the one person yet to contribute to thediscussion…

UPDATE 1:

An Interesting Observation: You may have thought this already but I can confirmthat it is true that seeing the six colours that are assigned to the others gives you absolutelyno information whatsoever about your assigned colour.

An Interesting Fact: Given the above observation, it is all the more surprising that theredoes exist a perfect strategy that guarantees your freedom! (This apparent dichotomy iswhat makes this my all­time favourite riddle.)

UPDATE 2:

A Hint: Despite the mutual exclusivity of your colour and the assignments made to theother six it is important to hear what the other six assignments were for the perfectstrategy to work.

Another Hint: There’s not a lot of obvious maths in the problem as it’s stated. Let us fixthat by substituting numbers for colours. We can map the rainbow order (Red, Orange,Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet) easily to the digits 0 to 6…

You will get answers favoring both Flipkart and Amazon ­ unless your entire audience isgood with basic math (that doesn't happen often). You will also get some wisecrack aboutbuying from Amazon because it is better. The actual answer is that it does not make anydifference. Both are offering you the same price.

Let us say the book costs 100 Rs.

Via Flipkart: Website offers a 30% discount bringing down the price to 70 Rs. The flipkartapp offers another 20% discount ( on 70 Rs.) i.e. a discount of 14 Rs. This reduces theprice to 56 Rs.

Via Amazon: Website offers a 20% discount bringing down the price to 80 Rs. TheAmazon app offers another 30% discount (on 80 Rs.) i.e. a discount of 24 Rs. This reducesthe price to 56 Rs.

As you can see, both of them are offering it to you at the same price. So go ahead, buy itfrom Amazon ­ because it is better.
