800 MHz Fire Paging 101- Types of Paging on the MPSCS
- Radio Call Alert Paging Via MCC-7500 Console- Sent to a pre-built list of two-way radio IDs to alert
the user that a call is coming- Allow 1 to 2 seconds per radio for alert to be sent
and acknowledged- Dispatch Console Displays a Green Check Mark
when all acknowledged- Dispatch Console Displays a Red X if not successful- Used in some areas for station alerting
- Unication Pager- Talkgroup based - same as two-way radio traffic- Allows consoles to alert multiple agencies and
disciplines in a single transmission
MPSCS
800 MHz Fire Paging 101• Pager Features
Unication Buffer and Alert – Pager receives and records page call. Dispatcher Presses PTT and makes voice announcement
Pager Inserts Alert Tone and plays recorded dispatcher audio
User can replay recorded message

800 MHz Fire Paging 101• Paging Groups
– One VHF Paging Cap Code / Tone Pair becomes one paging group
• Fire Tone• EMS Tone• Officer’s Tone• Hazmat• County All-Call
– 4 Page Group One-time Set Up Fees

800 MHz Fire Paging 101
MPSCS Fee: One time set up fee Cap Code = One Page Group = $1500 set up MPSCS subscriber credits can be used per formula –
ask for your current standing. Programming network connected consoles included
County All-Call page group no fee. No per pager fee. Unication has contract pricing with the State of
Michigan http://www.michigan.gov/documents/localgov/6600085_529234_7.pdf
MPSCS
800 MHz Fire Paging 101• Pager Features
64 Zones with 8 switch positions per Zone Up to 64 Pagegroups or Talkgroups per switch position Groups are assigned a priority level. When priority scanning multiple
groups, pager switches to highest priority active group.• More groups = Less back ground site scanning & shorter battery life
Planned 12 to 14 hour battery life – improved with newest firmware Micro USB charging and programming – same as Android Smart Phone
(No custom programming cradle.) Voice record with time stamp. Voice notes. Message lock. P25 Trunking, P25 Conventional 7TACs, NFM Analog 8TACs IP67 Rating Waterproof and Dustproof Bluetooth to earphone G5 Dual Band 7/800 + VHF or 7/800 + UHF
MPSCS
800 MHz Fire Paging 101- How does P25 Trunked Paging Work?
• Pager G4 Pager looks for MPSCS network (WACN 92493
System ID 796) and the programmed System Site List to confirm it is in range Pager uses back-ground site scanning to select best
system signal Pagers work best when there is more than one local
site to choose from
MPSCS
800 MHz Fire Paging 101- Home Sites (Where)
• A paging foot print or site list is determined by considering agency’s business need and network capacity. The network is configured to
transmit pages on listed sites The same site list is
programmed into the pager. Pager knows when it is
‘In Range’ or ‘Out of Range’ If ‘Out or Range’ user needs to
make a change to be ‘In Range’
MPSCS
800 MHz Fire Paging 101- Pager Programming Software and Pager Firmware Versions Must Match
After November 2016 the MPSCS is no longer ‘certifying’ pager software for use on the MPSCS. Unication, dealer network, early adopters will be testing new versions in limited numbers of pagers and providing feedback to determine approved status.
May become a user group or community function.
MPSCS
800 MHz Fire Paging 101- Lessons Learned in Allegan County
• Radios and Pagers Need Operator Training.
• Test new firmware before mass upgrades.
• Backup / Storm Plans • Programming strategy to improve
‘Out of Range’ recovery times• Pager between sites works best.• Need local pager programming
expert and advocate.
MPSCS
800 MHz Fire Paging 101- Lessons Learned in Allegan County
• Antennas can break– Damage is not visible
• Batteries can go bad– May cause erratic behavior
• Pagers break• Use process of elimination
– Swap out part in question– Does problem follow part or
pager

800 MHz Fire Paging 101- Lessons Learned in Allegan County
• Network coverage projections are ‘On Street’ with an allowance for light building construction. Test in doors.
• Some sites have directional antennas
• Metal constructed fire station reduced street level signal by 30 dB.
• One business cut the signal by 35dB = cut signal in half 11 times!

It maybe appropriate to adopt local building codes to not allow such significant reduction to public safety radio signals.

800 MHz Fire Paging 101• MPSCS network paging advantages:
Defined coverage with in and out of range notification Network uses multiple tower sites redundant coverage Tower Sites have redundant voice and control transmitters Utilizes existing network and dispatch resources Dispatch back up paging capabilities Pager background scans home sites for best signal Extremely well maintained and upgraded infrastructure 7 x 24 x 365 system monitoring - Network Communications Center No paging leased lines and paging site maintenance Compatible with existing MPSCS BDAs G4 is beginning of life and is being developed to meet public
safety needs now and going forward
