Understanding the internal constitution of the

structure by looking at it makes stoppage of

leakages as much an art as a science. Water-

proofing and protection techniques are used to

control deterioration of structures. Underground

liquid retaining structures, roofs constructed from

Concrete, brickwork or block work can often leak

immediately after construction or during its service

life. Structural Specialties is able to provide a

complete service from identification of the root cause

of failure to providing a comprehensive repair solution

for stopping all leakages.

Corrosion Mitigation: Reinforcement corrosion, exacerbated by reduced alkalinity of the

surrounding concrete, is the major cause of concrete deterioration. The two main mechanisms behind

this deterioration, evidenced by cracks, spalling and delamination, are carbonation (from

atmospheric carbon dioxide) and chloride attack (from sea

water, marine aggregates and de-icing salts).

Modern methods which have overtaken the traditional patch

repair of damaged concrete are - corrosion inhibitors, re-

alkalisation, chloride extraction and cathodic protection by

means of galvanic anodes or induced current systems.
