Different Styles of Serving FoodFamily Style- When the food being served is in the

middle of the table in serving dishes and is passed around to each person to the right to serve themselves. ex. traditional Thanksgiving dinner

Plate Service- When the food is placed on the plate in the kitchen and brought out to the person eating. ex. restaurant

Russian/Continental- This is a very formal style of meal service that usually consists of multiple pieces of dinnerware, flatware, and stemware. Usually many courses of food.

Buffet- People help themselves to food set out on a table. ex. Golden Corral

Some definitions to know…Etiquette- courtesy shown by using good

manners when eating.Cultural – changes depend on where you are and

what you were taught. There are subcultures within cultures (teens, families, elderly, men vs. women, etc.)

Tableware-any item used for serving or eating food, plates, bowls, glasses

Flatware-knives, forks, spoons, gravy ladles…

Place setting-Tableware needed by one person to eat a meal.
