The Western Hills girls basketball team did not do as well as hoped in theWeatherford Tournament this past weekend, going 1-3 in tournament com-petition. “We were a little rusty, and we were missing some players due toinjuries,” coach David Kubicsek said. Imani Freeman, Nakaya Cooper, Carmen Rosales and Amaria Cooperled the Lady Cougars in scoring at the tournament. Western Hills plays Castleberry on Jan. 3, and Kubicsek said the LadyCougars need this one. “I expect it to be a big game for us,” Kubicsek said. “It is a game we needto win if we want a chance at playoffs. I’m hoping we have a great week ofpreparation for the game.”
Over at Benbrook, the Lady Cats have been hit by the flu virus, andcoach Leta Lofton said some of her younger players have had to step up. “It has been a rough few days back from the Christmas holiday,” Loftonsaid. “But we were able to salvage the FWC tournament by moving a coupleof capable freshmen up to replace those out sick.” Lofton said Quiarra Bolton, Miah Overton, and Madison Sorrell are to becommended for leading the team in the absence of Benbrook's two captains, and freshmen Macaela Creger, Valery King, and Emily Siddig “found them-selves filling some very big shoes on the varsity level.” Benbrook plays Dunbar on Jan. 3, and Lofton said her team will have itshands full. “We will go into the Lake Worth and Dunbar game with those just return-ing from the flu, but we still have our goals set and our minds set on beingsuccessful in district play,” Lofton said. “We will put our best foot forward.” For the Benbrook boys, an 80-34 victory over Venus was a nice win justbefore Christmas, and coach Blake Mendez said he could not have asked formuch more from his team. “We played really well against Venus,” Mendez said. “We were aggres-sive on defense, which led to some easy buckets in transition. Everyone gotinvolved and it was a good outing for us.” Mendez said he had a strong individual performance as well. “Jordan Butler played great offensively,” Mendez said. “He was gettingto the rim and finishing, which is what you want.” Benbrook will play Dunbar on Friday, and Mendez said his team will bein for a challenge. “We know Dunbar is extremely athletic, and they can score,” Mendezsaid. “We’re going to have to have a great defensive outing and take care ofthe ball.”
