Martha’s Musings . . .I leave August 1 for two weeks of continuing education in Scotland.

The first week I will stay at the manse of a Church of Scotland minister inGlasgow. It will be a wonderful opportunity to see first hand how church isdone there. I will also be able to see the great art collections in Glasgow aswell as visit important sites in church history. From Glasgow I go to theIsle of Lismore, on the west coast near Oban for a post-doctoral seminarconducted by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Dr. David Fergusson ofthe University of Edinburgh will lead an international group of students inthe study, The Reformation and Its Theological Legacy. Following theseminar, I will take the ferry three hours out into the Atlantic for a few

days on the Isle of Tiree. Tiree looks like Hawaii, has wonderful sea life to watch and has apopulation of about 200.

So why go all the way to Scotland to study? (Other than the 60 degree temperatures!) Twoterms of my doctorate were done at the University of Aberdeen. I discovered then how much Ilearn when I am in a new and unfamiliar context. I learn news ways to perceive things. I realizedthat issues very important to the U.S. churches were not necessarily the issues important tochurches in Scotland or on the European continent. In others words, I gain new eyes when I studyabroad. I always come home with new understandings about people and their lives. My vision isenlarged.

I look forward to the trip. I will bring home lots of pictures and stories. While I’m awayHarry Tysen will preach and serve communion on August 8. On August 15, Harry will lead agospel sing. Don’t miss these exciting Sundays.

August News From Christian Education

Presbyterian Youth Triennium was held on July 20-

24 at the campus of Purdue University. Kylee Ayers, Steve Olson, JessicaMerrill and Olivia Cooper attended and all had a great time except for thelack of air conditioning in the dorms. The four attendants will be giving abrief 10-15 minute presentation to the church on Sunday August 1st duringthe service. Be sure to attend so you can hear about the trip and see some oftheir pictures.

The INTERGENERATIONAL MISSION TRIPtraveled to St. Louis for the Urban Mission Camp. We were in St. Louisfrom the 11th to the 16th of July and can now confirm those are the hottestdays of the years in Missouri. We worked for the Kingdom house painting,gardening and doing general fix it up work. We also were able to help with alow income nursery and help rehabilitate a elderly gentleman's home. We

sang songs, ate really well, and had wonderful devotions. We also got to see the arch, the St. LouisCardinals, and the animals at the zoo.We had 23 mission goers and all had a wonderful time. We will be presenting about the trip at theLast Sunday Brunch on August 29th so be sure and attend.

We are always looking for Volunteers in the Christian Education depart-

ment. If you are interested in teaching or helping to teach a Sunday School class,working with the Youth Group or Gods Kids, serving on the committee or want tobring a snack for the kids we would love to have your help. It takes many peopleto make our Christian Education programs successful and we would love for you tobe a part of making them special. If you are interested, visit with Scott about op-portunities available.

The First Day of Sunday School is Sunday,

September 12th. We will have a fun, festive first day to kick off the new schoolyear.

Gods Kids and Youth will meet for the first time this year on Wednesday

September 15th. We are going to have great time this year with new and exciting curriculum andactivities. Please plan on attending this year for food, fellowship and fun.

anytime. The Food Bank is experiencing a highvolume of customers; and items like staples,rice, cereals, jelly are in big demand.

GIVE IT UP CAMPAIGN

On Sept. 11, you can contribute to the "Give itup Donated Items Campaign" from 9 to noon.Items can be left at Grace Baptist Church, 400E. Crawford. These items will go to EllsworthPrison.
