Inter Care dispatched 258 consignments of medicines,
worth £677,443, and weighing 11,514 Kgs, to 117
clinics in rural Africa. In 2012-2013 the total value
dispatched was £697,081
2013/14
Cameroon £30,693
Ghana £73,623
Malawi £123,542
Sierra Leone £38,259
Tanzania £177,213
Zambia £46,247
Special deliveries £187,865
Total £677,443
The types of units supported by Inter Care include:
hospitals, health centres, dispensaries, infirmaries,
an orphanage, a hospice, a centre for the disabled,
prisons, a diabetic clinic and schools for the blind and
partially sighted.
Visit to Ghana, August 2014 Jean Widdowson and Verna and Sara Webber (pictured on the front page) visited 10 health units across Ghana.
These visits to clinics are a vital part of the Inter Care service as we learn so much about the local conditions, the
qualities of the staff and the medical issues faced. Each trip results in a report which makes recommendations
about the way we work, both locally with the units visited, and also more generally where there are lessons to
be learnt.
Inter Care is 40 years oldIn 1974 Inter Care sent its very first consignment of medicines, valued at £275, to Luwuchi Dispensary, Malawi.
In August 2014 and over £12 million worth of medicines later, consignment number 5332 valued at £2,260, was
sent to St Peter’s Hospital. Likomo Island in Malawi.

Message from the Chair of Inter Care’s Board of TrusteesThe year to August 2014 was a memorable one for Inter Care, being the fortieth anniversary
of our birth.
Although the value of medicines sent to Africa declined slightly (£678,000 v £697,000 in 2013), underlying
‘routine’ dispatches were higher. The difference in total dispatches in 2013 accounted for by an unusually high
proportion of ‘one off’ donations from pharmaceutical companies. Inter Care is now consistently operating at a
level considerably higher than that of five years ago, in line with our strategic objective of sustained increases in
shipments.
The income that was generated declined marginally from £254,000 in 2013 to £239,000. With the phasing of
payments by major donors, careful cost controls and operating efficiencies we have comfortably met our objective
of holding reserves to cover Inter Care’s operating costs for at least six months.
We continued to experience a tightening in the regulatory environment and now hold three licences: a wholesale
licence from the MHRA, a waste handling licence from the Environment Agency and a controlled drugs licence
from the Home Office. Inter Care now operates with very high levels of control and strict operating procedures.
We would like to specially thank Jean Widdowson and the Medical Panel for their hard work and professionalism
throughout the year.
In line with our declared strategy of prioritising fund raising, our staff team was increased by two new part time
appointments, Elena Garcia a general fundraiser and Julie-Anne Smith, specialising in grant fundraising. Both
are already making an excellent contribution. Also proving herself to be a great addition to the team is Charlotte
Wright, who joined as an administration apprentice and has now been confirmed as a full time staff member in
that role.
Sadly, Carol Austin declared her intention to step down from her position as Resources Manager. Carol has given
twenty two years of selfless performance and Inter Care owes her a great deal; in the somewhat turbulent period
six or seven years ago, Carol’s hard work and loyalty was a key factor in our survival. We shall all miss her.
In keeping with our philosophy of maintaining personal links with our African beneficiaries (now numbering 127
clinics) a visit was made to Ghana. Many practical benefits emerged, including the possibility of improved delivery
methods, as well as the vital reinforcement of our personal communications.
Margaret Greiff MBE, Inter Care Patron and former Administrator, wrote and published an excellent book outlining
key milestones in Inter Care’s first forty years. As well as celebrating this birthday, the book has proved to be a
very useful contributor to our funds and has been so well received that a second print run was commissioned.
Finally, my sincere thanks to all who gave their talents and time so generously over the year – staff under Diane
Hardy’s energetic leadership, our marvellous volunteers, medical donors, financial donors and fellow trustees. It is
their unfailing support which contributes to Inter Cares outstanding success.
Alan Mellor, Chair of the Board of Trustees

DonorsMedicines
2013/14 has again seen an increase in the amounts of good quality medicines received, with over 1,300 GP
surgeries across the UK contributing. The increasing quality of those medicines is due entirely to the efforts of
those who sort them at the surgeries and we cannot thank them enough for the time that they spend on doing
this. This has also helped us to slightly reduce the amount of medicines that we have to send for incineration.
A special thank you to PAL International (Sheila Brucciani) for their regular donations of disposable items such
as gloves, aprons and wipes, and also to Advanced Care Products for their continuing supply of much-needed
Blood Glucose Test Strips which are well-received in Africa.
Finance
You can see from the summary of the accounts attached that we can report that 2013/14 was another successful
year financially, showing a surplus of over £28,000.
We are extremely fortunate to be able to secure grants from several Trusts. Some Trusts support our work but
wish to remain anonymous; we gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the following:

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS
Our volunteers are truly inspirational and valued greatly by Inter Care as in 2013/14 they donated a whopping
10,000 hours of their time to help us (notable as it is actually more hours than the paid staff!). It is fair to say that
without this voluntary support we simply would not exist. This year again has seen an increase in the number of
volunteers, and the number of hours they contribute to our work.
The tasks performed by volunteers are many and varied. They include: collecting medicines from surgeries and
getting them to Syston, selling books, recycling items, professional support, and not forgetting the staff in the
surgeries who collect and check the medicines before they are sent in to us.
A special thank you to those who gave regular weekly effort during the year in the warehouse and the office in Syston:
In Memoriam: It is with great sadness that we report the passing of John Heller, Mary Riley, Gillean Russell and
John Speirs, all of whom were great supporters of Inter Care over many years. Also Morley Wheeler and Constance
Harper who generously remembered Inter Care in their wills which enables us to continue with our work.
Our condolences go to their families, along with an appreciation for their many years’ work for Inter Care.
