8.3 Reactivity and Solubility
If long day: sodium demo.
1. ReviewWhat reactions are shown?
Single Replacement
Acid/Base
A. 2 Zn + O2 2 ZnO
B. Ca(OH)2 + 2 HNO3 Ca(NO3)2 + 2 H2O
2. ReviewWhat reactions are shown?
Single Replacement
DecompositionA. H2SO4 SO3 + H2O
B. SnSO4 + Zn ZnSO4 + Sn
3. ReviewWhat reactions are shown?
Double Replacement
CombustionA. C4H10 + 6.5 O2 4 CO2 + 5 H2O
B. K2SO3 + Mn(OH)2 2 KOH + MnSO3
___AgNO3 + ____ BaCl2 ___ Ba(NO3)2 + ___ AgCl
4. Review!Balance this and indicate what type of reaction it is.
Type _____________Double Replacement
2 2
Reactivity is a measure of which elements replace others in single replacement reactions.
See Reactivity Table (Resources P. 4)A metal (or halogen) less reactive than another will be replaced. Note: halogens relplace halogens,
metals replace metals.

Will CuS be aqueous or solid in water?
A. Would nickel carbonate dissolve, or form a solid in water?
9. Solubility Check!
Will KCl dissolve, or remain solid in water?B.
C.
A. Cations: Ammonium ion, and all Group 1 elements are soluble.
B. Anions: Nitrate is always soluble.
C. Chlorides are always soluble, except for silver and lead (II) chloride.
General Solubility Rules
Solutions of aluminum chloride and ammonium phosphate react, forming aluminum phosphate and ammonium chloride. Balance the reaction and predict the precipitate.
AlCl3(aq) + (NH4)3PO4(aq) AlPO4(?) + 3NH4Cl(?)
Which is insoluble?Look at your solubility table: AlPO4 is insoluble, and NH4Cl is soluble.
10. Solubility Example
___AlCl3 + ___(NH4)3PO4 ___AlPO4 + ___NH4Cl
AlCl3(aq) + (NH4)3PO4(aq) AlPO4(s) + 3NH4Cl(aq)
Calcium chloride and sulfuric acid solutions react in a double replacement reaction, forming a precipitate. Write and balance the reaction, THEN determine which product is the precipitate using your table.
___CaCl2(aq) + ___H2SO4(aq) ___HCl + ___CaSO4
CaCl2 + H2SO4 2 HCl + CaSO4
From your table, calcium sulfate is insoluble:CaCl2(aq) + H2SO4(aq) 2 HCl(aq) + CaSO4(s)
11. Solubility Demo.
In a single replacement reaction, sodium metal reacts with water, forming sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
Balance this:___ Na(s) + ___ H2O(l) à ___ NaOH(aq) + ___ H2(g)
