Most flower girls tend to fall between the ages of two and six or seven — but at one Kansas wedding, the 'girl' tossing flowers down the aisle was a young 83 years of age. Brenna Kleman, 27, mar-ried her husband Brock Kend-all in April, and made the un-conventional choice of asking her octogenarian grandmother to serve as flower girl. 'Grandma' — as she would only identify herself to Good Morning America — was happy to oblige, saying: 'I felt excited and blessed to be there.' A registered nurse, Brenna said one of her pa-tients — who herself had been a flower girl at her grand-daughter's wedding — gave her the idea. When she asked her grandmother to fulfill the role,

man supplied it. “Alright, here goes. I’m old. What that means is that I’ve survived (so far) and a lot of people I’ve known and loved did not. “I wish I could say you get used to people dying. I never did. I don’t want to. It tears a hole through me whenever somebody I love dies, no matter the circum-stances. But I don’t want it to ‘not matter.’ I don’t want it to be something that just passes. My scars are a tes-tament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar is deep, so was the

Sometimes life can deal a blow so harsh that it feels like your grief will break you. That is what one grief-stricken Reddit user did after she lost her best friend and felt like she couldn’t move on. The young woman’s statement was simple but packed with a heavy heart. “My friend just died. I don’t know what to do,” her statement read. While there was no shortage of replies from people promising that time heals all, she had posed the question looking for a deeper answer, and one old

love. So be it,” he says. “As for grief, you’ll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, you’re drowning, with wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and the magnifi-cence of the ship that was, and is no more. You find some piece of the wreck-age and you hang on for a while all you can do is float. Stay alive.” “In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy. They come 10 sec-onds apart and don’t even give you time to catch your breath. After a while, maybe weeks, maybe months, you’ll find the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can func-tion. You never know what’s going to trigger the grief. It might be a song, a picture, a street intersec-tion, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything…and the wave comes crashing. But in be-tween waves, there is life.”

“Somewhere down the line, and it’s different for everybody, you find that the waves are only 80 feet tall. Or 50 feet tall. And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming. An anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas. You can see it coming, for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you’ll come out.” “Take it from an old guy. The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don’t really want them to. But you learn that you’ll survive them. And other waves will come. And you’ll survive them too. If you’re lucky, you’ll have lots of scars from lots of loves. And lots of shipwrecks.” In a society where we are taught to handle our grief like an object that can be picked up and put away whenever the need arises, the truth-filled message this old man sent to this griev-ing girl is probably the sin-gle most important piece of advice that anyone could have ever given her on how to live through her grief.

Her 'vision trouble' turned out to be a sign of stroke—but she ignored it

gery to remove the clot, Barnathan made an in-credible recovery. "The first day after surgery I was 80 percent better, and in the first 48 hours I was 95 per-cent recovered." She cred-its the quick response of her fiance for her progress. "A lot of my recovery has to do with my age and getting to the hospital right away. The longer you wait to seek help, the more irreversible damage is done." Today, Barnathan says she's 99 percent recov-ered—and she could be 100 percent, she believes, if she had sought help the moment she noticed her vision was different at the gym. Barnathan stresses that a stroke can happen at any age, and knowing the signs is vital. "Learn the BE FAST signs now. Get help right away, even if you doubt your sign is related to a stroke. The worst-case scenario is that you go in, get checked, and the hospi-tal sends you home. If you suspect someone else is having one, then get them to the hospital immediately.

her fiance not to call 911. He knew otherwise: Barnathan was having a stroke as he assessed her using the stroke sign acronym BE FAST: balance loss, eyesight loss, facial drooping, arm weakness, and speech diffi-culty equal time to call 911. "Many times the person hav-ing the stroke has no idea anything is wrong, and it's a bystander who sees the signs and seeks help. I really had no idea that my speech was slurred and my face was drooping." Barnathan was taken to

the hospital within 30 min-utes, where a CAT scan revealed a blood clot in her brain; it was the result of a torn ca-rotid artery. "I remember the doctor telling me I had sal-vageable tis-sue and ask-ing for con-sent to do surgery. After sur-

Lauren Barnathan no-ticed she couldn't focus on the room around her. The vision symptoms cleared up quickly, and her fiance rec-ommended she go home and rest. "I knew something was-n't right but I really didn't think too much of it," says the 30-year-old Barnathan. "I had the day off so I just spent the day resting. Eve-rything seemed normal." That night in bed, though, Barnathan realized some-thing was horribly wrong. .

"I was thrashing around in the bed, trying to turn over, but I couldn't because the entire left side of my body was numb. I thought maybe I was having a sei-zure. My fiance asked what was wrong and turned on the light and that's when he saw that the left side of my face was drooping. My speech was slurred, too." Despite her alarming symptoms, Barnathan says she was "blissfully un-aware" that there was any-thing wrong; she kept cracking jokes and telling

incredibly positive," he says. "Her entire life she's been active. She used to run, bike and swim-up until recently and now she goes for a walk and weight trains at home." For Pasternak, Risa's company is a breath of fresh air. "She's an inspiration because I work with a lot of very privileged people every day and I'm very lucky to do so," he says. "They're all able-bodied people who have everything at their fin-

Harley Pasternak's In-stagram is flooded with pho-tos and videos of him sculpt-ing the bodies of celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian, just to name a few. There's every excuse in the world." Risa spent her life do-ing the opposite, Paster-nak says. She never gives up on her goals, and al-ways makes being active and mobile a priority "She's contagious, smiling all the time, with not one complaint in the world," he says. "She's almost 102 and never misses a workout so why should you?" What inspires her, you might ask? "She works out because it feels good," Pasternak says. "She loves life. Not just living long, but living well. She's a reminder that you don't just want to survive, you want to thrive, which is exactly what she does."
