PrefaceThe Nortel* Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 is a flexible and multifunctionalLayer 2/Layer 3 switch that supports diverse network architectures andprotocols. The Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 provides security and controlfeatures such as Extensible Authentication Protocol over LAN (EAPoL),Simple Network Management Protocol, Version 3 (SNMP3), and SecureShell (SSH). The Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 provides quality of service(QoS) for a high number of attached devices and supports future networkrequirements for QoS for critical applications, such as Voice over IP (VoIP).

This guide describes the individual NNCLI commands available for theEthernet Routing Switch 8300 Software Release 4.0. The guide lists eachcommand, together with the complete syntax and a functional description, from the Nortel Networks* Command Line Interface (NNCLI).

Before you beginThis guide is intended for network administrators who have the followingbackground: basic knowledge of networks, Ethernet bridging, and IP routing familiarity with networking concepts and terminology experience with windowing systems or GUIs basic knowledge of network topologies

About the NNCLIThis section describes the Nortel Networks Command Line Interface(NNCLI) command modes you use to configure the Ethernet Routing Switch8300 and the commands you use to access the NNCLI. You can access theNNCLI using the following methods: Telnet session rlogin local console port

NNCLI command modesThe NNCLI has four major command modes, listed in order of increasingprivileges: User EXEC Privileged EXEC Global configuration Interface configuration

Each mode provides a specific set of commands. The command set ofa higher-privilege mode is a superset of a lower-privilege mode. Thatis, all lower-privilege mode commands are accessible when using ahigher-privilege mode. The command modes are as follows: User EXEC mode

This is the initial mode of access. By default, the User AccessVerification Password for this mode is empty, and password checkingis disabled. The system administrator can change the password (andpassword checking enabled) in Global configuration mode. Once thepassword is changed, it is activated immediately.

Privileged EXEC modeThis mode is accessed from the User EXEC mode. When accessingthis mode, you are prompted to provide a login name and password. The login name and password combination determines your accesslevel in the Privileged EXEC mode and other higher modes.

Global configuration modeThis mode allows you to make changes to the running configuration. Ifthe configuration is saved, these settings survive reboots of the switch.

Interface configuration modeThis mode allows you to modify either a logical interface, such as aVLAN, or a physical interface, such as a port/slot.

From either the Global configuration mode or the Interface configurationmode, save all the configuration parameters (both global and interface) to afile. The default name for the configuration parameters file is config.cfg. Youcan also use alternative filenames.

"NNCLI command modes" (page 43) lists the NNCLI command modes, theprompts for each mode, the abbreviated name for each mode, and how toenter and exit each mode.

Note: Prompts are expressed in this table using the format Passport-8300:5;however, prompts returned from your switch typically reflect the specific chassisyou use. For example, if you use the 8310 chassis, the prompts use the formatPassport-8310:5. Prompts can be customized, also, using the NNCLI commandsnmp-server name . Refer to Getting Started (316799-C) for moreinformation.

Accessing the NNCLIWhen you first power up the Ethernet Routing Switch 8300, the defaultinterface is the Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 CLI. To switch from the CLIto the NNCLI, you must change the NNCLI boot flag to true and save theboot configuration file using the following commands:Passport-8310:5# config boot flags nncli truePassport-8310:5# save boot

You must reboot the switch for this change to take effect. After you rebootthe switch, access the NNCLI using Telnet, rlogin, or the local console port. You can log in to the switch using your password and the default privilegepassword nortel.
