The Higgs Boson-- “The God Particle” 希格斯玻色子 - “ 上帝粒子” When Lederman wrote about this particle, he

called it “The God-damned Particle!” But the editors changed it to “The God Particle” to the astonishment of physicists.

Now the name of “The God Particle” sticks. Peter Higgs predicted the existence of a particle

field 38 years ago at Edinburgh University. His research paper was rejected by CERN then Now the CERN scientists confirmed the Higgs

particle exists.

The Higgs Boson-- “The God Particle” 希格斯玻色子 - “ 上帝粒子” The Higgs particles act like glue where matter

stick together to form protons and electrons It took almost 40 years for over ten thousand

scientists and engineers to make the discovery CERN has the largest particle collider in the

world CERN scientists accelerated two beams of

protons near the speed of light and analyzed the collision, which yielded scores of fragments of particles

The Higgs Boson-- “The God Particle” 希格斯玻色子 - “ 上帝粒子” Hundreds of gigawatts of energies were spent to

make such collisions possible They found the footprint and the shadow of the

Higgs particle Another team of physicists at Fermi Lab actually

had similar results months ago, but they were less accurate (110 to 130 Gev)

The CERN team narrowed it down to 126 Gev The Higgs boson explains the structure of matter

but NOT the origin of matter

The Higgs Boson-- “The God Particle” 希格斯玻色子 - “ 上帝粒子” There is a difference between the structure of

matter and the origin of matter There is also a difference between the structure

of a cell and the origin of the cell We may know all the structure of a cell and yet

we may not know the origin of the cell We may know all the structure of matter and yet

we may not know the origin of matter Where did the original energy come from?

The Higgs Boson-- “The God Particle” 希格斯玻色子 - “ 上帝粒子” To satisfy the conservation of matter/energy, the

CERN scientists showed such huge amount of energy turned into matter

For the origin of matter and for the conservation of matter/energy, we must also seek the origin of energy

Where did the original energy come from? That may be one reason why the God particle has

some meaning When God provided the energy, particles came Let us all give glory to God the Creator!

Some Wonders of Our Brain 我们大脑的一些奇迹Our brain is the seat of our conscious activities.

Its texture is like that of soft tofu. It’s delicate.

It’s less than 3 lbs, or between 1.3 to 1.4 kg.

It contains about 100 billion neurons and 10,000 billion synapses

About 80% of the cranium is the brain.

About 20% consists of blood vessels and fluids.

Its capacity is about 1.7 liters.

5000 year-old humans had bigger brains!

Some Wonders of Our Brain 我们大脑的一些奇迹Our brain has shrunk about 9 cubic inches from

archaeological data from Europe, China, South Africa, and Australia. That’s about 10% less!

Some speculate that our brains become more efficient or due to different diets.

The truth is that our ancients were not dumb.

The brain accounts for 2% of body weight, but it uses 20% of oxygen in the blood and 25% of the glucose in the blood stream.

Wrinkles in the brain make us smart.

Some Wonders of Our Brain 我们大脑的一些奇迹Only 10% of our brain are neurons. The other

90% accounting for half of the brain’s weight are glia. Glia means “glue” in Greek.

These glia cells maintain neurotransmitters to provide immune protection and to promote synapse growth and function.

The blood-brain barriers only allow a few molecules into the nervous system of the brain.

These barriers protect the brain from infection.

Some Wonders of Our Brain 我们大脑的一些奇迹The brain starts as a tube.

Three weeks after conception, a sheet of embryonic cells called the neural plate shields and fuses into the neural tube. This becomes the central nervous system.

During the second trimester, glia and neurons begin to form.

At 24 weeks, wrinkles begin to form.

At 26 weeks, the brain begins to look like that of a newborn.

Some Wonders of Our Brain 我们大脑的一些奇迹Teen brains are not fully formed!

The grey matter peaks just before puberty.

Multitasking abilities mature at 16 or 17 years old.

Teens learn empathy through socializing.

Brains never stops changing.

Brains adapt to damage to nerves carrying visual information by pulling similar information from other nerves.

Mental training of prayer and meditation can change the structure and function of the brain!

Some Wonders of Our Brain 我们大脑的一些奇迹Male and female hormones affect brain

development differently

The nature versus nurture debate is still unknown

For the most part, male and female brains are similar

Gender differences in brain are close to zero!

While we are looking and thinking about these wonderful facts about the brain, let us give all glory to the Creator God Jesus Christ!

Some Wonders of Our Heart 我们心脏的一些奇迹Our heart has been known as the soul, the spirit,

love and intelligence.

It weighs about 250 gm or 8.8 oz, and it divides into 4 chambers.

These chambers work as an almost never-ending pump, pushing blood around our bodies.

It’s efficient and it operates so automatically that we don’t even think about it.

Some think it is the center of emotions. Although it is not true, we would die without it.

Some Wonders of Our Heart 我们心脏的一些奇迹In an average life time, the human heart beats

some 2,000 million times and pumps 110 million gallons of blood.

The average heart rate is around 70 beats/minute.

Most hearts keep going with little attention for around 80 years and rarely need replacing.

It generates its own pulse or contraction.

Most of our muscles need us to think about contracting them in order to move, smile, or talk.

Some Wonders of Our Heart 我们心脏的一些奇迹The heart generates its own electrical signal,

which causes the chambers to contract in a particular sequence at a rate of about 30 cm per second when not excited.

Problems of the heart are divided into problems with the blood supply to the heart, problems with the muscle which makes up the heart tissue, and problems with the rhythm of the heart.

If the arteries to the heart muscle become narrowed, the person will suffer chest pain on exertion. This is known as angina.

Some Wonders of Our Heart 我们心脏的一些奇迹If one or more of the coronary arteries blocks off,

part of the heart muscle is deprived of blood supply. The person will have severe chest pain. This is a heart attack.

If the heart muscle would not pump well, this is called heart failure. The person would be breathless, and a build up of fluids in the ankles and lungs.

Heart rhythm problems usually show palpitations or breathlessness on exertion.

Some Wonders of Our Heart 我们心脏的一些奇迹Chest pain needs immediate medical attention.

If you want your heart to look after you, you must quit smoking, take regular exercise at least 3 times a week, eat a healthy diet, and check your blood pressures regularly.

Doctors help to reduce our pains, but God helps us to be on track to live longer lives.

Let us all give glory to God Our Creator Jesus Christ!

Some Wonders of Our Liver 我们肝脏的一些奇迹 The liver weights about 3.5 lbs or 1.6 kgs. It’s located below the diaphragm in the upper part

of the abdomen, mostly under the ribs. Its functions include processing digested food from

the intestine; controlling levels of fats, amino acids, and glucose in the blood; combating infections in the blood; clearing the blood of particles and infections; neutralizing and destroying drugs and toxins; making bile, which helps to digest fat; storing iron, vitamins and other essential chemicals…..

Some Wonders of Our Liver 我们肝脏的一些奇迹 Furthermore, our liver breaks down food and turns it

into energy (ATP into ADP); it regulates numerous hormones; it makes enzymes and proteins responsible for most chemical reactions in the body.

A toxic liver will leave us vulnerable to degenerative diseases; auto-immune disorders; diseases of the eyes and poor vision; digestive problems; menopause and PMS; allergies; impaired libido; skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema; low energy levels; weight gain and low metabolism.

health causing problems such as depression, anxiety and panic attacks, excessive anger, ADHD and ADD, Alzheimer’s / dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.

Take care of our liver by consuming a healthy diet; do not eat foods with additives, coloring or preservatives; do not expose to pesticides, chemicals, and pollution; do not smoke or expose to second hand smoke regularly.

Some Wonders of Our Lung 我们的肺一些奇迹 Our lungs transport oxygen from the air into the

blood stream while taking away carbon dioxide Our left lung and right lungs are not the same.

The left side is divided into two lobes. The right lung is divided into three lobes. The left lung is smaller, allowing room for the heart.

Some people have only one lung. It just limit some physical activities.

People having a large lung capacity can send oxygen around their bodies faster. Regular exercise can increase our lung capacity.

Some Wonders of Our Lung 我们的肺一些奇迹 An average adult breathes about 12 to 20 times

a minute while resting. An average person breathes in about 11,000

liters of air every day. We lose half a liter of water every day through

breathing. The breathing rate is faster in children and

women than it is in men. The surface area of the lungs is about the size

of a tennis court. The highest recorded “sneeze speed” is 99 mph

Some Wonders of Our Lung 我们的肺一些奇迹 After exercise, a person breathes to over 60

times a minute. Every day, we breathe in about 40 billion trillion

molecules of oxygen. Exercise can increase the efficiency of the

lungs as blood capillaries extend—more blood passes through the lung resulting in more oxygen uptake.

Training causes the alveoli to become rounder, increasing surface area and helping gas diffusion

Some Wonders of Our Lung 我们的肺一些奇迹 Phlegm is the way the lungs clean themselves.

It traps dust and is then shimmied up the throat until we need to cough.

The right side of the heart sends blood to the lungs. After blood has been oxygenated, it is pumped by the left ventricle around the body.

There is always some air left in the alveolar walls to prevent alveoli collapsing.

About 1 liter of air always stays in the lungs. Bigger adults have a lung capacity of about 6

liters, and about 4 liters for smaller adults.

Some Wonders of Our Lung 我们的肺一些奇迹 If all the air tubes and sacks were connected in

a line, they would exceed 31 miles or 50 km. In an average lifetime, a person takes about

half a billion breaths. On average, the inside of the nose makes

about enough mucus every day to fill two egg-cups.

In both lungs of an adult, there are about 300 million alveoli.

Some Wonders of Our Lung 我们的肺一些奇迹 Smoking can cause lung cancer and other

cancers. Asthma is a common disease affecting the

lung. Asthma attacks happen when your airways

make it hard to breathe. Pneumonia is a dangerous disease that makes

it hard for the lungs to absorb oxygen from the air.

Other lung diseases include emphysema, tuberculosis, and bronchitis.

Some Wonders of Our Lung 我们的肺一些奇迹 Steps to take care of our lungs: Never smoke. Don’t even try it. Increase our aerobic capacity. Do some vigorous

exercise 3-4 times a week. Breathe in through the nose, especially around

toxic fumes. Watch what we inhale. Avoid car exhaust and

gasoline, tobacco smoke, fire smoke, cleaning supplies, paint, talcum or baby powder, fiberglass, ceramic dust or fibre.

Take medication if you have asthma or other respiratory condition.

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 Each of us has 2 kidneys. Some of us donate 1

kidney. Each kidney weighs about 4-6 oz. Each kidney is about 12 cm or 4.5” in length. Kidneys filter about 180 L of blood every day! Every day, kidneys filter the blood about 50

times. The kidneys receive 1000 to 1200 mL /minute. Each kidney contains about 1 million functional

units called nephrons. The kidneys have a higher blood flow than the

brain, liver, or heart.

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 Kidneys help to control our blood pressure Kidneys help to keep strong bones Kidneys help to produce red blood cells Kidneys are the silent partner to good health! Refined carbohydrates and sugar help the body

to make kidney stones! Sugar stimulates the pancreas to release

insulin, causing extra calcium to be excreted in the urine—kidney stones.

An excess of milk or antacids may cause kidney stones.

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 The kidneys of a newborn baby are about 3X

larger in proportion to body weight as in the adult.

The volume of urine excreted daily varies from 1 L to 2 L.

If we do not take care of our kidneys, we may develop kidney diseases:

Mainly there are two types of kidney diseases: chronic kidney disease (CKD), and polycystic kidney disease (PKD).

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 There are many symptoms of kidney diseases: 1. Changes in urination: urinating more often

during the night or in greater amounts; urinating less often or in smaller amounts; having foamy or bubbly urine or blood in the urine; difficulty in urinating.

2. Swelling: If the kidneys are not able to remove extra fluid, we will likely experience swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, face, or hands.

3. Skin rash / itching: Unable to remove waste from the bloodstream, the buildup can cause rashes and severe itching.

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 4. Leg, back or side pain: Kidney problems can

lead to pain in the back, side or even in the leg. Kidney cysts resulting from polycystic kidney disease that form on kidneys and occasionally on the liver can also cause back and leg pain.

5. Metallic taste in mouth/ammonia breath: When wastes build up in the bloodstream, it can cause bad breath, a metallic taste in the mouth, and affect how food tastes.

6. Nausea and vomiting: Waste buildup in the blood can cause nausea and vomiting.

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 7. Feeling cold: Healthy kidneys make the

hormone, erythropoietin, which prompts the body to make oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Kidney disease can interrupt the healthy production of this hormone and cause a decrease in red blood cells causing anemia. Anemia and kidney disease can result in a variety of symptoms, including feeling cold and shortness of breath.

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 8. Shortness of breath: Kidney disease can

cause extra fluid to build up in the lungs, leading to shortness of breath. Anemia, a common side-effect of kidney disease which starves the body of oxygen, can also cause shortness of breath.

9. Dizziness and trouble concentrating: Kidney failure will cause the body and the brain lacking in oxygen. The result can be dizziness, trouble with concentration, and memory-related issues.

10. Fatigue: Kidney failure can also result in tired muscles, weakness, and overall fatigue.

Some Wonders of Our Kidneys 我们肾脏的奇迹 How to prevent kidney diseases: 1. Become knowledgeable about kidney

diseases. 2. Keep blood pressure under control. Use diet,

exercise, low salt and low alcohol intake, and stop smoking. Some medicine may help.

3. Limit the amount of sugar intake. Use diet and daily monitoring of glucose in the blood.

If we are healthy, thank God. If we are sick, pray to God to have the doctor to

help us correct the problems.
