£
Welcome to the Q3 Market Monitor 2015
Your quarterly publication designed to deliver the latest trends in the Technology staffing industry. Our insight focuses on job titles and regional statistics ― allowing us to identify which skills are in most demand, and in which areas.
In this report, you’ll find information on salary and vacancy trends across contract and permanent recruitment within each of our core specialisms.
Q3
The third quarter of the year might be good for holiday-goers, but in recruitment terms, things are decidedly quiet as hiring managers and job seekers take a well-earned break. The permanent market is always the first to feel the effects, reflected in a 5% fall in the number of permanent vacancies advertised in Q3 2015, compared to the previous quarter. The decline is however smaller than might be expected indicative of the strength of the permanent market at present. Companies continue to hire permanent recruits in an economy of growing confidence, demonstrated by an 11% rise in permanent hiring YoY.
Richard Protherough
Managing Director Spring Technology
Overview and General Market
The contract market experienced a slight lull compared to last year and last quarter, but the decline was negligible.

IT forecast: Hiring intentions at a record high
According to KPMG’s Tech Monitor, companies in the IT sector are positive about the future — forecasting an increase in profitability and hiring for the rest of the year. In fact, their survey puts hiring intentions at a record high.
The UK election and wider EU issues caused some confusion in the second quarter, delaying hiring decisions within many UK businesses; while summer slowed
recruitment activity throughout Q3. If the anticipated rise in hiring does manifest itself during the remaining quarter of the year, employers must be prepared for a tense hiring battle in what is becoming an increasingly candidate-led market. High calibre professionals are already difficult to attract in this sector, and an influx of other interested parties won’t make employer efforts any easier.
Seminar sessions: Bridging the Gender Gap
Spring Technology hosted four breakfast seminars across the UK (Leeds, Birmingham, London and Manchester) on Bridging the Gender Gap that proved to be a thorough success.
Over 200 IT And HR professional attended the seminar sessions and enjoyed discussing diversity, empathy and challenges in a stereotypical male environment.

Senior Appointments
The most senior of appointments in this practice area performed the best of any during the summer months, with growth on both the permanent and contract side. This went against the grain of the market average, and while a 20% rise in contract roles over the summer months is not a total surprise, permanent growth is unusual.
Things also improved greatly from the same period last year, with a 45% increase in the number of available roles.
All other areas in this practice saw demand fall in line with market movements and expectations over the quarter; although the permanent market continued to see higher demand for talent than this time last year — a trend enjoyed by the wider economy, as the country gains in stability and looks to longer-term planning.
The contract market faired less well: Manager and Project Management roles saw demand increase by 1% from this time last year, but contract Business Analyst roles were down by 12%.

Only contract Network Engineer roles saw demand increase during the third quarter of 2015, and even that was marginal at just over 2%. That said, none of the falls in demand reached double figures, so can most likely be reconciled to the summer slowdown.
Perhaps the most surprising find from the third quarter of the year is the drop in technical support roles from this time last year. As the second largest jobs area in the IT market, making up over 12% of all roles, a decline is a matter of some interest.
The other two areas are stronger than they were a year ago — noticeably so in the permanent market in line with wider expectations.

Software Engineering always heavily influences the overall view of the market; carrying well over a third of all roles on both the permanent and contract side. As such, the figures here are close to the market average.
There is a notable rise in the number of organisations using new development languages and tools for front end development.
.Net MVC is requested as standard by almost all employers, and reflects the huge take-up within the market.

The Business Applications practice has seen demand fall across the board over the last year — significantly in the case of ERP; this area has decreased by more than 20% across both the contract and permanent markets since this time last year.
During Q3 however, there was somewhat of a reversal of fortunes compared to the wider market: while demand for permanent hires fell, the number of contract roles grew.

IT Security roles showed a modest growth in demand compared to a year ago, and despite the expected summer slowdown in the permanent market, the contract market actually grew; however, this area is not growing as quickly as we might have expected given the heightened awareness amongst companies of the problems that can arise in this arena.
While 6% growth in contract roles is better than many, growth in the permanent market is barely average for an area that many consider the great battleground of our time. Have companies already put talent in place, or are they too cautious?

This was a very positive quarter for the Testing and Quality Assurance practice, as demand grew across both contract and permanent markets — partly fuelled by the continuing take-up of Open Source tools by SME companies across the UK, and culminating in a healthy increase in roles against this time last year. The contract market in particular saw demand grow by a third compared to the summer of 2014 .
Furthermore, many employers who previously outsourced their testing functions are beginning to bring them back in-house — leading to a peak in demand in this area.

The Business Intelligence and Data Management practice is looking healthier, with more jobs across all areas of the permanent and contract markets in Q3 than the same period last year.
Demand was consistently up by more than 20% in the permanent market, despite the anticipated single digit summer slowdown.
On the contract side, Business Intelligence saw roles rocket by more than a third in the past year despite a flat quarter.
Big Data is also a very hot topic within the practice. There has been a notable increase in organisations planning for the long-term, with Windows Azure, SAP HANA and IBM Pure Data solutions being taken up by employers across the country.

Whilst permanent actuary roles are up and contract compliance roles are down, this trend is reversed in the other two areas.
It should however be remembered that there are relatively few vacancies in these areas, so small changes in the volume of vacancies can generate a high percentage.
