Magnitude Transformers

Transformers are a necessity in the operation of a low voltage lighting system, it mounts to the home’s exterior and plugs directly into the GFI outdoor receptacle(usually already existing). Transformers range in size from 60 watts up to 1200 watts. The size of transformer needed is calculated by multiplying the total number of fixtures bythe wattage of each fixture’s bulb (i.e. 6 step lights at 7 watts each = 42 total watts and 12 railing lights at 11 watts each = 132 total watts. Add the 2 totals together for a grandtotal of 174 watts. In this case the transformer chosen must operate a minimum of 174 watts. It is always a good idea to purchase a transformer with 50 to 100 extra wattsavailable. This will save money in the long run by not having to replace the entire transformer if more fixtures are added to the project in the future. Most transformersoperate on a maximum of 300 watts per circuit. Consult your transformer’s instruction sheet to verify how many watts are allowed per circuit and take it intoconsideration when you are designing your lighting layout. You never want to overload your transformer’s circuit.
