INNOVATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS

The Co-op Difference • Whatever it TakesHancock-Wood Electric is no stranger to innovation. We regularly engineer complex electric distribution solutions both on land and underwater for our Kelleys Island members. This pioneer spirit of seeking unprecedented energy solutions was born in 1938, when investor-owned utilities refused to serve rural areas because it was just not cost effective. So, farmers and ranchers banded together to bring light and power to area businesses and residences.

Today, we continue that effort and always sell our services at cost to member owners. We abide by cooperative principles – not the least of which is concern for our communities. A community thrives when it can create a strong local economy that attracts and supports good corporate citizens.

Our rates are competitive because our goal is to cover costs not maximize profit. At the end of the year, we typically return any revenue over expenses back to our members in the form of capital credits - cash back from your energy bill investment. Our reliability is where we shine, reducing outages dramatically with the 2013 introduction of Supervisory Control And Data Aquisition (SCADA) and distribution automation. If an issue arises, we are locally owned and operated so we are right beside you – on call 24/7– not in remote corporate offices.

We are connected - electric co-ops span and serve 75 percent of our nation’s land mass, so we have some pretty great connections to help you reach your goals. And that’s not all.

Our affiliate organization Prism Propane Services of Ohio, LLC, was one of the first Ohio companies to offer businesses and schools a greener energy solution with autogas. Prism has access to millions of gallons of storage capacity both onsite and off site and transportation and distribution partnerships across the U.S. so we can easily deliver energy savings to you. See what our customers say about us on page 8.

A strong and vital network of connections helps Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative and Prism Propane Services to offer more to businesses than our thriving electric distribution system or booming clean-energy propane gas services. Both companies were commended in April 2017 by Ohio Secretary of State John Husted as “exemplery Businesses that Power Ohio.”

Our arms stretch across the U.S. to more than 900 electric co-ops serving 75 percent of our nation’s landmass. These partners continally share development experiences and expertise. We also have the backing of both Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. With that power of a national network to back us, we have forged strong ties at government, development and community levels that allow us to leverage funding and offer expert consulting and development services to benefit you.

As a rural energy distributor, Hancock-Wood has access to grants and low-interest loans to help you with your business project. We have a powerful relationship with Regional Growth Partners that manage and promote 70 Ohio business growth projects each year, and we are active in area growth entities that also offer grant options.

The co-op’s 21 substations with massive megawatts of capacity are much less vulnerable to outages due to significant upgrades to our technological leading-edge operation systems, which allow us to backfeed power remotely from one substation to another. We even launched our disaster recovery center in 2015 to back up all technological data in real time. We have invested millions in our infrastructure and continue to strengthen the system each year.

Through our contacts and ties at the federal government level, we were able to keep both our own customers supplied and even shared supply with competitors during Ohio’s 2014 state of propane energy emergency and the coldest winter in a century.

Through our nearly 80 years of operation, Hancock-Wood has delivered innovation on a national level and received many awards and recognition for safety, innovation and technological creativity. We even helped bring light to the night in La Soledad, Guatemala. Since launching a co-op in 1938 that delivered electric distribution within its first year, the co-op steadfastly remains at the cutting edge of energy solutions – but not without overcoming significant challenges.

When Lake Erie Electric Co-op could not adequately supply electricity to Kelleys Island residents, HWE stepped in, merged with the company, and utilized technology never used before with lake floor cables to provide safer and more reliable energy services.

As our distribution system began to age, we needed to address our equipment and facilities. We did so with an agressive rebuilding program, which continues today.

We later were challenged with power interruptions from failures of transmission systems outside our distribution-system control, but still affecting our members. We built an extensive Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and, with the use of Distribution Automation, solved the problem of massive outages specific to defined areas.

SCADA equipment allows us to remotely reroute power from one substation to another to restore power to an affected area almost as easy as flicking a switch. Sensors on a device called a recloser detect the loss of voltage and communicate with other switches to restore the energy flow at open points between various circuits. That means reliability for your business.

This technology isn’t one all electric utilities have at hand. For Hancock-Wood, it has resulted in a dramatic reduction in outage duration. So, for example, what once could have been a three-hour outage is now just a few minutes of power interruption.

This is not to say the maintenance on the system is entirely without human intervention. Our engineers are up, even in the middle of the night at times, to activatethe distribution automation points and reconfigure the network for optimum power restoration.

Each time, we expanded resources to meet these challenges and proactively prepare for the future by researching innovative ways to bring our members and customers the best of what is available in safe and reliable service.

Night or day, in any weather, our engineering/operations personnel work to ensure our business members’ service reliability, and it gets us noticed. Our innovation has been featured several times in Rural Electric (RE) Magazine’s national publication.

This service is backed by nearly 80 years of distribution know how.

Reliability - why we beat the bestBecause Hancock-Wood made a commitment to reliability, we couple our SCADA system with unparallelled Distribution Automation so we can reroute energy flow from one substation to another by remote means in the event of a power loss. We also have a interconnected distribution systems in place. This state-of-the-art technology means a much-reduced risk of sustained outages for companies that rely heavily on their energy supply.

It includes solar, wind, biomass and hydropower resources that align with our key priority of delivering reliable power to our co-ops at the lowest possible cost.

We dig development!6

What do we offer that’s better for you? Partnership.

Hancock-Wood Electric was estabished in 1938 to provide safe, affordable, reliable electric service to farmers, businesses and residents in rural Ohio, when all other investor owned utilities refused – because it was not cost effective.

That journey exemplifies the cooperative difference. And that effort took innovation and partnerships – necessary economic development qualities we continue to prize and implement nearly 80 years later. Now, part of a networked electric-cooperative system that delivers electricity to 75 percent of our nation’s land mass, that cooperative effort has grown - and our difference shows.

We serve our members, not shareholder bottom lines, so we give back to our communities to improve quality of life. We even typically return revenue-after-expenses margins to business and residential members in the form of capital credits on their bills - an attractive member benefit. Money back - have you experienced that before from your electric company? You should have.

The cooperative difference is all about partnerships. Because of extensive partnerships with government, community leaders, investors, contractors, site selectors, economic development leaders and others, we can offer you development services such as:

• Site selection assistance • Site planning analysis • Engineering support • Flexibility in rate design • Power quality services • Business rebate programs • Low interest loan and grant assistance • Community marketing and presentation training

We empower communities through our partnerships.

PRISM Propane was praised by business and school district leaders and elected officials at the August 2015 grand opening of its Autogas propane fueling station in North Baltimore for providing a “greener” fueling option for northwest Ohio.

Our company was in the news several times for its expansion innovation and service-focus company philosophy. One U.S. Congressman acknowledged the role the company’s Chief Operating Officer George Walton played in alerting the federal government to the 2014 state of energy emergency.

He said, “We were able to put laws into effect after the propane gas shortage because of the grassroots efforts made by PRISM Propane. I want to thank you for your hard work.”

Walton says, “We want to provide our local schools, business and municipalities with a cleaner-burning fuel alternative that is less expensive and keeps vehicle maintenance costs down.”

Walton received a commendation in a letter of citation from the State of Ohio recognizing PRISM Propane’s efforts to make greener fuel accessible in the area.

Many northwest Ohio school systems have adopted propane autogas as a fuel alternative to help reduce issues of rising gas costs and vehicle maintenance, a savings for the school district and its taxpayers.

Local agencies also are signing up with PRISM Propane to convert their fleet vehicles to accept the “greener” fuel to help with costs and to keep drivers and the communities they drive in more environmentally safe. Also propane buses are much quieter and warm-up faster when temperatures are below freezing.

The costs are lower primarily because propane is classified by the U.S. EPA as a non-contaminant of air, land, and water resources. Schools and nonprofits also can enjoy savings because available state grants offset the price associated with fuel conversion.
