Editor: I was interviewed by the Arizona Republic about three weeks ago. I stand behind what I said, and I will again add my continued support of Chief Arnson. Pinal County is very fortunate to have a true Christian leader, family man and professional law man as a candidate for Sheriff. I am a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. I served as a sworn deputy in the 1960s for the Maricopa County Sher-

iff’s Office. I have been the Chief Judge of the Gila River Indian Community Tribal Court for more than 20 years. Most recently, I was the gov-ernor of my community for many years. In April, 2010, I hired Chief Derek Arnson. He was the first non-native to serve my community as Chief of Police. Chief Arnson put together a five year strategic plan which afforded our community with a more effective and efficient

Letter to the Editor: Continued support for Arnson for Sheriffmanner of providing public safety. He is a man of great compas-sion and was instrumental in helping our community receive millions in federal grants; most notably, the building of a woman’s shelter for victims of abuse. Chief Arnson restored honor and professionalism to a po-lice department which was rampant with abuse of power and authority. He held his officers accountable! In fact, several of these officers were terminated and placed on the Maricopa County Attorney’s “Brady List” for dishonesty and other reasons. One of those officers, a female, punched a prisoner in the base of the skull was he was hand-cuffed to the rear, all because she was mad at him. This assault was captured

on video and was sent to the ACLU, FBI and other outlets, including AZ POST. The of-ficer still has her AZPOST certification and is attending a local Phoenix law school. Prior to Chief Arnson’s ar-rival, this was accepted as “status quo” behavior. Around September 2010, Chief Arnson informed me that my chief of staff and, now, governor of the com-munity, Greg Mendoza, had come to him requesting that he (Arnson) hire his (Men-doza’s) college friend as a new police commander. This individual is and was a Gila River community member. Chief Arnson informed me that Mendoza has asked him, some three or four times, if he would hire his friend. I informed Chief Arnson that he was to have no more con-

tact with Mendoza and that I would take care of keeping Mendoza from interfering with police business. I re-moved Mendoza as my chief of staff due to his interfering, not only with Chief Arnson, but with other department directors. Mendoza was later elected to the tribal council. He quickly ran and won the governorship. On October 31, 2011, I received a very disturbing phone call from Chief Arnson, informing me that he had just received a phone call from Mendoza which was rude and unprofessional. Chief Arnson stated that Mendoza said to him, “I heard from a reliable source that you are not sup-porting me for governor be-cause of my lifestyle?” Chief Arnson said that he informed Mendoza that he was very offended by his comment and that his sources are wrong, and that he is not supporting any candidate because he is not a voter in the community. He then went on to explain that he was not for sale and could not be bought and to tell Mendoza that any honor-able chief of police will not be swayed by politics, but, rather, serve the people, not an agenda. This recent press release

from my community is un-warranted and has harmed Chief Arnson. Currently, Mendoza is not making good decisions as governor. The current sheriff, Babeu, and Mendoza are personal friends. It is unfortunate that Mendoza would stoop to the prompt-ings of Babeu and shed such untruths upon Chief Arnson’s character. My community has now suffered, too, because of this false information. The Gila River Indian Community has never in the past released information of any kind, with reference to any employee or their employment status to the public. It goes against our sovereignty. Hindag, as passed down by our elders across hundreds of years, teaches us respect for all things, including the value of a promise, abiding by the law and concern for the wel-fare of others. This is a very sad game of politics, at the expense of a good man: Chief Arnson. Chief Arnson received excel-lent evaluations each year, and was an asset to our com-munity; as he will be to our county. He has my vote! /s/ William R. RhodesFormer Governor, Gila River Indian Community

Editor: As you read this, your early primary ballot is on the way to your mailbox. I want to talk directly to the registered Republicans. Four years ago you created the problem of Paul Babeu, and now you are the only ones who can fix it. We don’t often get the opportunity for “do-overs”, so please don’t waste this one! Four years ago Pinal County elected a sheriff with no experience and a proven history of lying.

Since then, there has been an avalanche of scandals, on-going investigations, and embarrassing national publicity for our county and state. Besides the sheriff himself, his deputies, administrative employees, political friends and family have all become tainted. We watched him reward political allies and punish political enemies. He hired disgraced Chandler cops, destroyed the financial health of the PCSO (and is presently lying about it), and

attacked anyone who disagreed with him. A federal program to distribute surplus equipment around the country had to be suspended because this sheriff decided to run a political and financial scam. He destroyed a working relationship with a nationally-honored volunteer mountain rescue group because it wasn’t under his political control. He has deliberately lied about the level of crime on the border (which

our county is nowhere near), the level of illegal immigration (lowest in years) and the level of border security (higher than ever before). All the while, he was campaigning for Congress, which was his ultimate goal, possibly using public, taxpayer resources (another ongoing investigation). When that fell apart with the revelation of his online sexual escapades, he was forced to “settle” for the office of sheriff. And in order

to make sure he has no interference, he has hand-picked a “team” of office holders that he can count on to do his bidding - supervisors, county attorney, even the Recorder, which is an absolutely non-political office - that he intends to shove down our throats. Having four Republican candidates on the primary ballot will potentially split the vote, and Babeu could win. I’m hoping that won’t happen, but it’s not in my hands. Republicans, you

have to fix this mess, hopefully with the help of Independents who choose a Republican ballot. If you’re still not sure, ask your kids, or your neighbors’ kids. I’d be willing to bet there’s not a child in this county over the age of ten who hasn’t seen, and snickered at, the pictures of Babeu online. That alone – which was enough to knock him out of the Congressional race – should disqualify him as our sheriff./s/ Mary Desio

Dear Editor: For several months, members of the Superior Chamber of Commerce have been discussing the fact that the Town of Superior has serious financial challenges. Mayor

Jayme Valenzuela spoke at our May luncheon, and Interim Town Manager Rita Wentzel and the Mayor spoke at the July luncheon, regarding the town issues. In an effort to work with other organizations in

Superior, we invited five of the non-profit groups in town to speak at our June luncheon. In the fall we plan to invite the remaining groups to speaks to our members. Each organization in

In April 2011, the Arizona State Legislature passed Senate Bill 1141 into law, signed by Governor Jan Brewer, which strengthened Arizona’s already existing residency rules. Even though the law took immediate effect, it has not been implemented up to now, so as to give state officials time to create the guidelines for Arizona schools which would explain the steps and measures necessary to be in compliance with the law.

Parents and legal guardians of children who attend public school must provide proof, every year, of where they live in the state. Before this law was passed, families only had to prove that they were state residents the first time they enrolled a student into a district. Documents that may use to prove Arizona Residency are: valid Arizona driver’s license or state identification card, valid Arizona Motor Vehicles registration, valid

Students must show proof of residency every yearUS passport, mortgage documents, property tax bill, rental or lease agreement including Section 8 agreement, utility bill, bank or credit card statement, payroll stub, certificate of tribal enrollment or other Identification issued by a recognized Indian tribe; other documentation from a state, tribal or federal agency including

the Social Security Administration, Veteran Affairs, and the Arizona Department of Economic Security. Families who are not renters and are living in someone else’s home must, in addition to the documentation mentioned above, provide the district with a notarized affidavit from an Arizona resident which attests that the child

and their parent or legal guardian live with the resident. The person who signs the affidavit must also show proof that they live in the state. On August 16, 2012, the Superior Unified School District is holding an open house for parents from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Secretaries and aids will be available at all the schools to assist families

as needed. Paperwork may also be turned in to the school’s administration at any time during regular school hours. “We urge you to please attend August 16 to complete this requirement. If you have any questions please feel free to call me anytime at 928-812-2970, said Pete Guzman, Superintendent of Superior Unified School District.

By Mila Lira The Superior Substance Abuse Coalition recently recognized Megan Cherry for her services to the coalition. Cherry has been an intern with the Resolution Copper Communications department for the past two summers. During her time as an intern she was instrumental in helping to plan the annual Win-

SSAC says farewell to trusted Internto-Swim Event that SSAC sponsors every year and she also helped to gather necessary research on drug abuse. In addition to her work with the SSAC she also worked at the John F. Kennedy Elementary

School. During her interview Ms. Cherry said she enjoyed working in the community and that her time in Superior was “wonderful”. SSAC Chair Elizabeth Magallanez explained that Ms. Cherry will be

missed by the Coalition and thanked her for her assistance over the past two years. “We wish her all the best and appreciate the passion that she has shown in the battle against substance abuse in our community.” This will be the last summer that Cherry will intern with the company. She will be married late this summer and will return to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where she will complete her degree in Elementary Education. Following graduation she would like to teach third or fourth grade.

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center Most people believe in the power of prayer. Numerous passages in the Bible tell us how God hears and answers our prayers. Many have related wonderful stories of how they cried out to the Lord in their trouble and received the help they needed. These kinds of testimonies encourage us to pray and trust the Lord when we need help. But not all prayers bring such wonderful results. Sometimes it feels as though there is a barrier between us and heaven and there is no way to break through it. It is quite possible that a barrier does exist and that possibly, we are the problem it is there.

Pastor’s Corner The Bible has various passages that speak about the ‘why’ of a failure to receive answers to our prayers. Psalm 66:18 says, “If I had hidden my sins in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” God is holy and does not allow sin in His presence. If we have a secret sin we are trying to hide from God and others, it just won’t work. Until we deal with our problem, God does not have to listen or answer our prayers. Proverbs 1:28 and Zechariah 7:13 talk about when we ignore God. When He speaks to us and we don’t bother to pay attention to Him, He is not obligated to respond. If we are being stubborn or indifferent concerning God, He will not answer when we call on Him. James 4:3 says that sometimes, our motives are entirely wrong. If we are asking for our own personal benefit, don’t expect the answer your want. The request does not honor God or respect who He is. These are just a sample of how God responds to us in our relationship with Him. We are asked to have faith in God and to trust Him. That works really well when we know He will hear our prayers and respond appropriately. We just need to clean up the inconsistencies in our spiritual life. God loves each of us very much and He desires to bless us in many ways. Acknowledge and ask His forgiveness for any secret sins. Check your motives when asking for His help. Above all, don’t ignore His voice when He speaks to you. Walk in His love and forgiveness, knowing that He hears and answers your every prayer!
