WELCOME
That’s the traditional cue to a film crew. But increasingly it’s the call of stadium operators before the whistle is even blown. We’re building ever-more connected and technologically-advanced stadia. These entertainment production facilities have historically fulfilled the needs of traditional TV broadcasters. But now our buildings must satisfy the needs of the narrowcasters, influencers and selfie-souvenir hunters. Ticket stubs and programmes are being replaced by binary code. Today our ‘memory factories’ need to provide the perfect backdrop for those unique Instagram moments. Our stadia continue to evolve – but must always remain, fundamentally, the best places to experience live.
Our eighth annual TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit brings together a global gathering of professionals who are delivering the next generation of facilities. My personal thanks to all our speakers for their expert input, to our partners and sponsors for their support and finally – above all – our thanks to YOU for joining us.
We wish you a great ‘influencer experience’ at the Summit – and if there’s anything we can do to assist your happy memories – real or digital – please let us know.

On the site where Concorde was designed, built and tested, a supersonic new arena for Bristol will stand. A world class entertainment destination like no other: a stage for world-class events from world-class performers for 2022. Built inside the famous Brabazon Hangars, YTL Arena – will host up to 17,000 people making it the UK’s third largest arena. The arena itself is the iconic element of a £2bn property developent across the Filton Airfield. Developer YTL has appointed Grimshaw – in partnership with Manica Architecture – to be the design team for the arena project. Landscape architects Grant Associates and planning consultants Avison Young have also been appointed to help support the arena through the planning process. Three of a (Different) Kind: Re-Use, Reflect & Respect We're combining three very different new venue projects to set the tone and lead the agenda for the Summit. First, a giant abandoned structure re-purposed as an entertainment arena. Second, a new home for rugby in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site. And, finally, the historic home of cricket gets a few new modern additions. What are the common lessons? Where are we improving? And where do the key project challenges remain?

This project is about delivering a new home for Bath Rugby, regenerating the riverside in the heart of Bath, and creating wider sporting and city benefits, building a legacy for all. The design solution needs to celebrate and complement Bath (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and also become a catalyst for helping Bath Rugby Foundation deliver wider sporting and community benefits; focusing in particular on empowering young people to succeed in life. The £50m redevelopment of Compton and Edrich Stands at Lord’s Cricket Ground forms the second phase of the updated Masterplan for the Home of Cricket. Based on the overall architectural identity of Lord’s and the ‘village cricket green’ ethos, two new stands will be delivered in record time to raise overall capacity to 31,000 – making Lord’s the largest cricket stadium in the country. The rapid-build design sequence has been developed to minimise interruption to match fixtures, with the 11,500 stands’ seats due to be ready for use during the 2020 season.
Fully fitted-out facilities are scheduled to be completed for the summer of 2021. The new stands will provide much-needed enhancements including improved sightlines, integrated catering and WC facilities, and more accessible seating. Fitting the ‘new’ with the ‘old’ we welcome:
• Robert Ebdon, Estates & Ground Development Director, Marylebone Cricket Club / Lord’s
• Sam Wright, Director & Head of Sports & Tourism Team, WilkinsonEyre

Renovating under operations – Insights from FC Barcelona The Nou Espai Barça project heralds the complete reconfiguration and modernisation of the home of FC Barcelona in the heart of the Catalan capital. As this landmark €600m programme gathers pace we examine the added complication of operating facilities while under construction. One of the first phased completions is the opening of the Johan Cruyff Stadium (the club’s mini-stadium - pictured). This initial project has provided useful insights into project delivery, serving as a testbed for the main works on the stadium and its surrounding precinct. Preliminary works – such as new power supplies, test piling, and the reconfiguration of staircases – are informing the programme for the serious works at Camp Nou which start next year. When it comes to playing while building, what are the differences for Client, Designer and Contractor?

Following on from BuroHappold’s contribution to the Brand Finance Football 50 report (left), our speaker will provide an update on venue performance design, showcasing how this now has now been implemented on several major projects. He will also explore three major sports industry trends and what they mean for the future of venue design. Finally, there will also be some guidance on how to actually get something built without (too many) nasty surprises along the way – or after.

Leaner & Greener By embracing data-driven design the sports and entertainment industry can reduce capital expenditure, cut carbon emissions, reduce energy consumption and deliver more healthy and sustainable buildings.

Fast-track tensile architecture for stadia Designers are now offered a range of computer-designed, standard architectural components which offer myriad ways of connecting and covering. This digital ‘drag and drop’ approach creates roof structures which are both individua and economical.
• Thomas Hermeking, Head of Pre-Construction - Lightweight Architecture, Pfeifer Structures
ETFE: Capabilities and Sustainability ETFE is now the ‘go to’ stadia coverings. Allowing a full spectrum of UV light to reach grass surfaces, this highly-customisable material boasts self-cleaning properties and superior “high-span-to-weight” performance (even providing bomb blast resistance). But what of its green credentials?
• Bernd Eckenroth, International Business Development, Nowofol
14.30-15.15 | CONFERENCE 1 DIGITAL DESIGN & FAST-TRACK IMPROVEMENTS
Incremental Additions to the Destination By their nature, sports venue projects are never the end game. Indeed a new stadium is often the catalyst for ongoing incremental schemes which add to the footprint, the commercial offer and the diversification of usage. In Bristol the next phase of Ashton Gate Stadium is in consideration – a new 4,000-capacity indoor arena, two hotels and housing, adjacent to the main stadium. In Manchester, Emirates Old Trafford has added a multi-purpose event space, new player pavilion and media centre and, most recently, a new 140-bed hotel. Now plans are underway to add a second hotel linked to a new stand. Exploring their expansions we welcome:
• Mark Kelly, Managing Director, Ashton Gate Stadium
• Dan Brown, Operations Manager, LCC / Emirates Old Trafford

15.15-16.15 | CONFERENCE 2 SMART STADIA IMPACTS ON DESIGN
Cables, Cabinets And Connectivity The digital transformation of the stadium environment is well underway. From advanced CCTV security cameras – with built-in facial recognition – through to dynamic menu boards, tomorrow’s stadia will be more connected, more intelligent than ever before. In the session we explore how connectivity requirements are driving (and challenging) design – from camera placements to signage positioning, from wayfinding locations to the layout of access control barriers.
• Mike Bohndiek, CEO, PTI Smarter Venues
Cashless Implications Tottenham Hotspur FC took the strategic decision to go cashless from the outset at its new stadium. How does this look – and work – in practice?
• Richard Keegan, Retail Solutions Specialist (UK&I) , HP Inc.
Digital Audio Case Study: Stade Geoffroy-Guichard St Etienne’s famous stadium – Stade Geoffroy-Guichard - received a major audio overhaul to enhance the fan experience. The impact has been significant but it’s all the cables, power and connections that create the real installation challenge.
• Jonathan “JP” Parker, Director of Sales, Danley Sound Labs
Club Wembley: Redefining sporting hospitality Over the last 3 years, Club Wembley has undergone immeasurable changes to its match day experiences, recreating and re-designing spaces which had not been touched since the opening of the stadium in 2007. Our speakers will take you on a development journey of Wembley Stadium, in the quest to create unique and compelling matchday experiences for the Club Wembley members. This journey featured the launch of three new products for the 2019/2020 season.
• Debbie Power, Associate Director, KSS
• Ros Robinson, Head of Club Wembley Development, The FA
Fit-Out: Estimates and Reality Good design has a price. But do you know what that is? Getting a handle on costs at the outset can ‘make or break’ any project – sports and entertainment venues in particular.
• Melvin Hopps, Estimating Director, Portview

A New Stadium, Arena and Football Training Complex for Colo Colo Colo Colo is regarded as the most successful football team in Chile – and one of the leaders in South America. Its home at Estadio Monumental in the south-east Santiago dates back to the mid-Seventies, with upgrades in the late Eighties. With the club’s Centenary in 2025 (and the proposed Uruguay–Argentina–Chile–Paraguay FIFA World Cup bid for 2030 across South America), the ownership is looking at major renovation works to upgrade the facilities at the 47,000-capacity stadium. But, with any eye to the future, it also sees the opportunity to develop a complete sports and entertainment destination – with the addition of a new indoor arena and a training academy. It’s early days in the masterplanning for this project: the perfect time to understand the expectations and opportunities as this club looks to take the best ideas from around the world to Santiago:

Why Fintech Transformation Will Change Your Stadium Business A fintech storm is coming – not just to payments but also ticketing. What does it mean for stadia, their businesses and their design? Besides readiness for (and compliancy with) new legislation this also implies that infrastructure within your venue should be ready. The growth of the big tech giants as payment providers (Apple, Alipay, Wechat, Google, Facebook and Amazon); the trend towards cashless and mobile payments; and, the desire to be connected anytime, anywhere – all of which impacts customer expectations and influences building designs. Consider: • How are POS systems positioned? Which payment methods are supported? • How and where is cash handled and where will safes and vaults be positioned? • Do we still need ticket sales offices? • How will cashless influence footfall traffic? Queues? Signage? • Is there an impact on power consumption and power backup needs? Our speaker lifts the lid on the changes coming to financial services – and the impact on stadia:
• Rob Rijsenbrij, COO, XLNT Operations B.V.

AV Design & Development Strategies for the Venue of the Future: All venues rely on repeat business to sustain their business models. Deliver a poor experience and the attendance levels will soon drop. If we consider our facilities as Memory Factories – gathering places where shared experiences are captured (digitally and emotionally) to be stored, shared and cherished – how best should we be equipping them to fulfil their potential? In this high-level discussion among stadia operators, teams, architects and AV integrators we explore best practices in collaborative design and development when leveraging audiovisual technology. We’ll explore some of the key challenges around AV design, procurement, financing and utilisation – and delve into future-proof strategies to ensure ROI on investments.

Ones To Watch We close with a selection of quickfire presentations on future projects, including:
[12.50-13.15] Al-Ahy: New Egyptian Monument After a few project iterations, Egyptian Premier League football club Al Ahly is moving to the design bid stage for its new 60,000-capacity home in stadium in Cairo. What can we expect from this future Egyptian monument?
Our guest speaker will explore the history of Africa’s Club of the Century, its regional marketing value and its current projects – before moving on to more detailed information about the stadium layout, cost, revenues stream, funding process and time plan for design and tenders.
• Mohamed Zakaria Serageldin, Member - Board of Directors, Al Ahly SC
[13.15-13.40] Tampere Deck Arena: A City within the City For 140 years, the railway has linked Tampere to the rest of Finland. Soon a central deck will be built above the tracks to house a multi-purpose arena, a hotel, and the city's tallest residential buildings. SRV is developing and constructing this new sports, cultural, leisure-time and commercial centre – a meeting place that will bring Tampere residents and travellers together through unique experiences. The foundation stone has been laid: Construction of Europe’s first downtown arena destination is underway. Set to host the IIHF World Championships 2022, the arena is being promoted as the most techologically-integrated arena yet designed in Europe. The building form is now taking shape but it is the implementation of the fan-facing solutions that are really catching the industry’s attention.

XLNTFrom 2007 onwards, the founders of XLNT Operations have been internationally active in the world of ticketing, payments and events. They noticed that since the arrival of online payments, online ticketing, social media and the use of smartphones, much has changed in the payment landscape: “10 years ago, clear and inexpensive cash payments were still commonplace. Nowadays, there are many hidden
uncertainties and shortcoming when it comes to payments and transactions: they have become expensive and fraud has arisen.” XLNT has developed transparent transaction-related processes around (sporting) events, a.o. in order to secure the money of event visitors. With this, money remains from the consumer until there is a service in return. “Canceled event? Visitors will get their money back. Still money on a payment card after the event? Visitors can then have their money refunded”. Besides financially protecting the visitor, XLNT unburdens organising parties in the area of ticketing, access and payments during events.
