    Lesson Plan

    Title: Chinese calligraphy and zodiacs

    Grade: 8th

    Grade Advanced

    Curricular Goal:

    Students will learn the basic steps of Chinese Calligraphy. They will also learn the 12 parts of the

    Chinese calendar/Zodiac. Students will create a Chinese Zodiac calendar with each symbol drawn on it

    and the name and year written in traditional Chinese with a calligraphy pen. Within their birth year they

    must have a piece of calligraphy that includes the Chinese character for their birth year animal, and their

    name written in traditional Chinese.

    National Standards:

    1.1-Maintain and conserve materials, tools, and studio facility, for the creation and exhibition of worksof art in a safe and responsible manner.

    1.2-Demonstrate productive, safe, and responsible use of art materials, techniques, and processes forthe creation and exhibition of works of art.

    2.2- Describe how elements and principles contribute to the expression qualities in a work of art.

    3.1- Compare and contrast how artwork and artists differ visually and spatially, and describe using

    elements and principles.

    5.1- Exhibit and critique own artwork defending the purpose of creating the work of art and art of

    others.

    6.1- Compare and contrast the ways ideas, themes, and concepts and how they are communicated

    through the visual arts and the various ways that those ideas, themes, and concepts are used in tother

    disciplines.

    Iowa Core:

    - Writing: Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, usingvalid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

    Targeted Standards:

    - Students will learn the basic steps of calligraphy and be able to identify the twelve Chinesecalendar symbols.

    - Students will learn how to create traditional Zodiac by drawing each matching animal andwriting in traditional Chinese what animal and year is being represented and their name within

    their birth year.

    Discuss:

    Chinese Zodiac Chinese Calligraphy

    Explain:

    They must design a Chinese Zodiac Calendar Design the animal that matches each year. Use Calligraphy to write dates, years, and names of animals. Write name in traditional Chinese with calligraphy pen.

    Day 2:

    Work time:

    Start layout design. Sketch out each piece of calendar and decide how you want to design it.Day 3:

    Work time:

    Practice Calligraphy symbol and name. Layout

    Day 4:

    Work time: finishing layouts of calendar
