BELL ACTIVITY: TAKE OUT YOUR SPELLING WORK FOR UNIT 21. REVIEW THE WORDS FOR THE SPELLING TEST.

Take out your spelling work. Make sure your heading is on it. One person from each group needs to collect the spelling work and submit it to the basket.

We will not be scoring your spelling work in class this week. Your spelling test will be the only grade that goes in the gradebook for spelling this week.

Put your heading on a blank sheet of paper.Number 1-20 + Challenge: Clear your desk of everything else.

The play was written by Charles Dickens during the Industrial Revolution. Dickens was an advocate for the poor.

IN A READERS THEATER, IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE STAGE DIRECTIONS:

Sam: Good Morning, teacher.

Teacher: Good Morning, Sam

Sam: What would you like us to do this morning?

Teacher: Please take out your homework.

Sam: You bet. This day is going to be awesome.

Sam: (coughing, seemingly ill)Good Morning, teacher.

Teacher: (Concerned, she approaches) Good Morning, Sam

Sam: (he has second more intense coughing fit, which causes the teacher to back away)What would you like us to do this morning?

Teacher: (speaking loudly from across the room) Please take out your homework.

Sam: (wearily, as he collapses in his seat) You bet. This day is going to be awesome.

I need a student to help me provide an example:

THE BEGINNING OF A BEAUTIFUL CAREER

Steps: 1. Pick a partner2. Determine who will be the teacher and who will be Sam, the student.3. Send Sam to pick up a script set.4. In your partnerships, each student will read through his/her part silently. Then do a quick

read through together. 5. Help each other to work on really creating the mood that are described in the stage

directions. 6. Practice it till it is perfect.

7. SWITCH PARTNERS & SCRIPTS!

When the music plays: “Sam” will return the scripts to the table & then returns. After “Sam” has returned, the “teacher” must go find another partner.

The “teacher” from round one will become the Round #2 Sam, All the Sams will become “teachers”. Once you have a partner, the new “Sam” will need to go get a different color or script than they performed during the last round.

Repeat steps 1-7

Sam: (too loudly) Good Morning, teacher.

Teacher: (sounding tired or annoyed)Good Morning, Sam

Sam: (chortling) What would you like us to do this morning?

Teacher: (sternly)Please take out your homework.

Sam: (sarcastically)You bet. This day is going to be awesome.

Teacher: (turns to look at Sam and smiles) Good Morning, Sam

Sam: (politely) What would you like us to do this morning?

Teacher: (enthusiastically) Please take out your homework.

Sam: (with vigor) You bet. This day is going to be awesome.

Sam: (dejectedly) Good Morning, teacher.

Teacher: (distractedly, not looking at Sam) Good Morning, Sam

Sam: (with a tired sigh) What would you like us to do this morning?

Teacher: (still distracted, searching his/her desk for something) Please take out your homework.

Sam: (defeatedly, walking with head down to his/her desk) You bet. This day is going to be awesome.

Allow students to choose partners. After modeling for students using the original set sans stage directions, have the pairs procure one of the sets (copied onto 3 different colors of paper). They are to practice the set with their partner. Then at the bell they are to switch sets with another partner set and try a second set. There is no need to do three rounds as the third round will be an attempt to find the third color.

Listen in and choose students to then model each set for the entire class.
