Brighton Unemployed Centre – Families Project

Playroom Volunteer

Volunteer position available for one or more days per week.

We operate from 10am to 1pm. Tuesday to Friday.

The Unemployed Centre runs a free Ofsted approved, playroom for children aged from birth to 8 years. The playroom is available to people who use the centres facilities, attend training or volunteer with us. Our playroom is well-resourced and we work within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to create a stimulating learning environment. We use adult led and child initiated play to support children to learn and grow. The majority of children that attend are aged from 1 to 3 years although children can attend up to the age of 8. The playroom is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am until 1pm.

We are looking for a volunteer to join our team and work in our playroom. Applicants must have good levels of communication and be confident in communicating with adults and children; have a good standard of spoken and written English; ability to work positively within a team. Having an early years/childcare qualification is not essential however a willingness to learn and attend training is.

The job involves helping to set up and pack away the play environment, both indoors and out each day; preparing and serving vegan snacks; working with individuals and groups of children to enhance their play and learning. We have a diverse group of children with varying needs who attend our playgroup and applicants must show an understanding and commitment to equalities, safeguarding, confidentiality and health and safety. The Unemployed Centre offers free childcare training through Brighton and Hove City Council and free e-learning through the Preschool Learning Alliance. We aim to support and train our volunteers to gain the necessary skills, confidence and experience they need to support them into paid employment in Early Years if that’s the path they choose. We provide a full induction programme which gives volunteers the support they need to work in the playroom. We have regular volunteer meetings and individual supervision sessions that help volunteers to learn and improve their skills. Cherry Tree Nursery is located in Hollingdean Children's Centre. We operate in an open plan environment that consists of 2 areas – one for 3 months to 2 year olds and for 2 to 5 year olds.

We are open from 8am till 6pm, for 51 weeks of the year. We are an inclusive nursery and provide care for children from different, cultures and backgrounds as well as varying needs.

We are looking for a nursery practitioner to join our team for 6 months to cover a secondment.

Applicants must have a Level 3 qualification in early years or childcare; have a good understanding of the needs of young children and have the ability meet the individual needs of all children whilst providing exciting learning experiences.

The role involves building relationships with children; supporting them in becoming independent and supporting them with all they do throughout the day. The successful candidate will work with children from 3 months to 5 years; will be a key person; will settle new children into the nursery and support them to build attachments; will ensure all children are learning and progressing in all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and will inspire children's enthusiasm to explore the world around them. We are currently looking to recruit a Bank Staff member who can be called upon to provide ad-hoc care to cover staff training and/or staff absence. We operate Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 6.30pm so shifts would be around those days and times.

Applicants must have good organisation skills, excellent communication skills; the ability to liaise with colleagues and children and to work well in a team. As the role would require you to step in to support different colleagues each time, you would need to be flexible, have a good understanding of the needs of young children, have a good understanding of how young children learn and develop and be experienced in working with all age groups.

Duties will be to adhere to our policies & procedures and comply with early years legislation including the Children Act, the Ofsted welfare requirements, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), health and safety and safeguarding. Roundabout Nursery is located in East Brighton. We provide places for 86 children per day and are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, 51 weeks a year. We are looking for a committed and dynamic Deputy Childcare Manager to cover maternity leave for one year. Applicants must have experience of leading and managing staff in an early years’ environment; experience of promoting the values of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and be qualified in early years and childcare to at least a Level 4. Other essential criteria includes; knowledge of local safeguarding issues and procedures; excellent inter-personal skills and experience of negotiation; leadership skills and the confidence and ability to positively encourage and support others; good planning and organisational skills and experience of developing good working relationships with parents and other service providers. The successful applicant will lead our team of 30 staff members in the nursery alongside the Nursery Managers. The role is to ensure the provision of high quality care and education for children aged from 3 months to 5 years. The principle duties will be to manage and co-ordinate the staff team; be part of the recruitment and selection team; to provide ongoing support, staff training, professional development and performance management; to act as Nursery Manager in her absence; to ensure care and education is delivered in accordance with OFSTED requirements and the EYFS, to co-ordinate the key person system in the nursery and ensure that monitoring, assessing, recording and reporting on children’s development and progress is carried out; to ensure strong links with parents; to work in partnership with other early years professionals; to ensure that child protection policies and procedures are adhered to and ensure staff are aware of procedures and are confident in following carrying these out; to ensure that learning opportunities and care provided is developmentally appropriate, for children from a range of social, economic and cultural backgrounds and for children with special educational needs and English as an additional language; to ensure the close monitoring of children with whom there are concerns. Stepping Stones Preschool Portslade is located in purpose built premises at Peter Gladwin Primary School in North Portslade. We aim to provide outstanding care and learning activities for children aged from 2½ to 4 years from varied social, economic and language backgrounds and abilities. The preschool children enjoy free flow indoor/outdoor play in a secure environment, gardening and varied stimulating activities that draw on their interests as they develop the ‘characteristics of effective learning’ and learn through play. The preschool has created and promoted the role of a Nurture Support Worker to support individual children and to work as part of the preschool team. We are looking for a qualified Early Years Teacher to be a Deputy Manager and part of the senior management team. Applicants must have Early Years Teacher (EYT) status / Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) / Early Years Professional (EYP) status or equivalent; experience in supporting children's care and development through child-led and adult-led play activities thereby enabling children to achieve learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and develop as unique, capable individuals. This role is about providing a quality early years provision, modelling practice and in conjunction with the manager supporting and leading staff in the delivering of the EYFS. Responsibilities include: planning and preparing for learning opportunities and activities/materials; being a ‘key person’ to a group of children; monitoring children's progress; ensuring the safety and welfare of the children in the learning environment; attending meetings; undertaking relevant training; working in co-operation with the manager to lead the team in meeting challenges and undertaking agreed administrative tasks. The setting provides induction support and further training as required. We are a well-resourced setting with a small, dedicated team and have been judged to be "outstanding" (Ofsted 2015).
