Students in Year 2/3M have learnt a lot since the beginning

of this school year. They have learnt how to log on to the

classroom computers using their own log in code and

passwords, and how to change activities during various

different rotation activities for Maths, Reading and Writing.

Below are images of the class during Reading Rotations. In

these rotations we have five adults assisting with the six

reading groups. Two adults are volunteer helpers (Mrs

Schmidt and Mrs Murray), and then we have our STLAN

(Mrs Oxenford), Teacher Aide (Miss Brassington) and

myself. Each adult has a specific task to do with each group.

We have Book Introduction, Guided Reading, Shared

Reading, Comprehension and an activity that is associated

with the book they have been reading. The sixth group has

an independent activity - Reading Eggs on the computers.

Encouragement One of the things that all of us benefit from is encouragement. When you are feeling tired or are anxious about a situation in your life, a few well thought out words from a friend or family member can give you that emotional lift that helps you to pick yourself up and keep going. However, it is very easy to get so involved in your own needs and wants that you don’t even notice when someone other than yourself is struggling. In a school community, there are many opportunities for you to get alongside someone who may not be having the best of days. If you notice that someone seems unhappy, don’t just walk away. Why not take a few minutes to talk to them, and to offer your support. If they need more help than you can give, why not accompany them to talk to a staff member. Looking out for others is something that we should all be doing. Please play your part in making our school a truly caring community.

-Chappy Ella

Assessment of student learning is an ongoing process that

happens before, during and after learning opportunities, and is

used to inform the next teaching opportunity.

Assessment can be broadly categorised into two major types:

Formative Assessment is assessment for learning. This type of

assessment usually occurs prior to explicit teaching in the

classroom and informs teachers about what a student may or

may not know about a particular subject or topic. Formative

assessment can be as simple as a class discussion to determine

what a group of students know about a topic, through to a more

formal approach which may be completed on a one-on-one basis

between teacher and a student. Examples of these more formal

formative assessment tools are Early Start whereby Prep

students at the beginning of the year are screened for their

knowledge and understanding of Numeracy, and Running

Records which provides a teacher with detailed data about a

student’s reading and comprehension level.

Summative Assessment is assessment of learning and assesses

what a student knows against the year level standards for each

Learning Area (subject) in the Australian Curriculum. Summative

assessment tasks occur after explicit teaching has taken place. A

few examples include pencil and paper tests, research projects,

one-on-one conference between a teacher and student, or a

folio of work collected progressively over a period of time. There

are many more types.

At Esk State School, out teachers use a variety of Formative and

Summative Assessment methodologies to build a picture of your

child’s progress at school which informs future curriculum

planning and teaching, and which contributes to your child’s

Report Card.

Please make a time to meet with your child’s teacher, or myself

if you would like more information.

Cross Country - Wednesday 21 March 1pm - 3pm The interhouse cross country will be held in approximately one and a half weeks. Now is the time to refine the fitness and to be prepared. It is important that your child does some running at home before the race as it will make the run easier for them. This can include running or a combination of running and walking.

We aim to start the cross country right on 1pm and hopefully all the events will be finished by 3pm.

Order of events and distances: 12 years - born 2006 (3km - 3 laps of the school) 11 years - born 2007 (3km - 3 laps of the school) 10 years - born 2008 (2km - 2 laps of the school) 9 years - born 2009 (1km - 1 lap of the school) 8 years - born 2010 (1km - 1 lap of the school) 7 years - born 2011 (600m - 2 laps of the oval) 6 years - born 2012 (600m - 2 laps of the oval) 5 years - born 2013 (300m - 1 lap of the oval)

Swimming Swimming lessons in PE lessons are now finished until Term 4. The children have done an amazing job in their lessons. A big thank you to the parents who came along and helped out. Your help is truly appreciated.

Anti- Bullying Day of Action

Next Friday is the National Action Day against bullying and

violence, and Esk State School will be part of this chance to

stand together. Case by case, the school is working to

reduce the incidence of bullying, whether inside the school

gate or online, with the aim of eliminating it wherever we

can. While schools and educators have a key role to play in

tackling bullying, we also know the important role parents

and families play.

“Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships involving a pattern of harmful verbal, physical or social behaviour.”

No Instrumental Music next week

Mr Smith must attend a Regional Music Camp in

Toowoomba on Thursday March 15. There will be no

Instrumental Music on this day.

The National Young Leaders Day

Last Friday the ten leaders of Esk State School attended the National Young Leaders Conference

which was held in Brisbane at the Convention and Exhibition centre. We left at 6.30am to drive to

Dinmore train station and then caught a train into the city. Once we got there we sat down with

2700 other students to listen to four inspirational speakers.

The first speaker was John Coutis. He is missing the lower part of his body and he rode in on a

skateboard. He told us about his life and how bullying had affected him when he was younger. His

message was to treat people the way you want to be treated and that you are special regardless of

any disability that you may have.

The second speaker was Jack Heath. Jack is a bestselling and award-winning author. He writes the

‘Danger’ series. He was inspired to become a writer by a librarian and his first book was published

when he was in high school.

The third speaker was Harrison Craig, the winner of the Voice in 2013. Harrison had a stutter when

he was younger but he found that if he sung he had no stutter. His message was to follow your

dreams as you never know where they may take you.

The final speaker of the day was Holly Ferling. She is a member of the Australian Women’s cricket

team as well as Brisbane Heat. She spoke about the difficulties surrounding the transition into high

school and how we should all be prepared for the changes that occur. Holly was a great speaker as

she connected with the audience and she inspired me to keep on trying.

I think everyone who attended had a great day and we were all exhausted when we returned to

Esk. I would like to thank Mrs Oxenford and Chappy Ella for taking us and to Mrs Brough who

organised it for us. By Haley D
