1. THE CUSTOMER’S NEEDS The customer is a packaging industry, which has revealed the need to save the energy costs cutting the lighting system consumption and to improve the lighting conditions at the same time. The previous lighting system was composed of 2x58 W fluorescent ceiling lights, located at a height of 6 meters from the floor. The internal distribution has been modified several times and the lighting system has not been fitted to the new disposition of the spaces. The 20% of the lamps was not working and the lamp switching on/off was not regulated but manually handled, without a correspondence neither to the real need of light inside spaces or to the activity to carry out there. The system were switched off for 15 hours per day for 5 days a week without an automated regulation, while the skylights were in a bad condition due to the ageing and the dirt, reducing a lot the natural light contribution. The annual lighting costs consisted in 65.000 € per year, while the annual lighting consumption amounted to 360 MWh.

2. THE DESIGNED SOLUTION It has been designed a solution taking into account all the aspects regarding a correct activation of the lighting plant, in compliance with the legal standards about integrity and durability. The requalification proposal has consisted in different steps:

• Lighting consumption assessment; • Lighting system re design; • Saving calculation and Business Plan; • Dismantling and substitution of the existing lamps with new LED devices; • Supply and installation of the Smart Platform components; • Disposal of the substituted lamps according to the RAEE norm; • Safety plan by the installation company; • Plant test; • Compliance certificate to the norm D.M. 37/08; • Support to the Title of Energy Efficiency achievement; • Support to the public funding obtainment.

The saving due to the presence deployed sensors working in synergy with the Smart Platform and to the optimal control policies of the lighting system, has been calculated amounting to 44.000 € for each year, with an appraised annual cost of 21.000 €. This saving can be increased in 5 years with 4.000 € yearly, amounting to a total of 20.000 €, achievable with the Title of Energy Efficiency sale.

3. THE SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE Our system architecture is composed of a SmartNetwork for the data acquiring and a SmartPlatform for the data collecting, processing, analysis and automation control. The SmartNetwork is composed of communication wireless devices, such as gateways and routers, and specific wireless sensors gathering the requested data for the contingent needs of the customers. The SmartPlatform is equipped with a database collecting all the data gathered by the sensors and it shows through several customizable dashboards the data trend and the possible scenarios to use as a basis for the plants control.

A. The Smart Network To optimize the consumption, only dimmable LED have been chosen, in order to adapt the lighting level to the real needs of each space, according to the natural light and people presence too. In particular, the presence of people is determined through a PIR sensor, a device which detects the movements occurring in its monitored area, working in the infrared field, while the illuminance level due to the natural light is measured by luxmeters. Then, crossing the data regarding the people present in a space, the natural light illuminance level and the activity to be executed in each ambient, the lights are regulated in order to assure the most appropriate level of illuminance to the task of each area.

The SmartNetwork covers the areas where are located the sensors, the automation components and the switchboards, for a total served area of 10.000 sq m. The network has a double level of redundancy and is composed by UHF 868 MHz devices. Another fundamental feature of the SmartNetwork is its flexibility: the lighting system regulation policies can be easily modified according to the customer’s changeable needs and the communication network formed by gateways and routers can be integrated with other functionalities in the future, such as people and asset localization.

b. Sensors and actuators Every light bus-way is equipped with a control sensor that manages all its fed ceiling lamps. The control is operated into 0-10 V range, varying from a minimum to a maximum level of illuminance, defined by the PIR and luxmeters crossed data. The quantity of actuators installed amounts to 130.000 devices. Beyond PIR sensors and luxmeters, the SmartNetwork is composed also of an external pyranometer in order to check the respect of the illuminance level according to the specific norms. Finally, also 10 multimeter to be supplied on each switchboard, have been supplied to monitor the electric consumption due to the lighting system.

c. The Smart Platform

The SmartPlatform includes and manages the possible working conditions scenarios (e.g. during the day or the night), regulating the lighting system according to one of them. The scenarios are set in cooperation with the customer, who can choose the scenario to use as basis for the system regulation. The Localization dashboard shows the geo-referencing of the required information, while the Information screen summarizes the main data, the alerts and the critical situations presence.

In this specific case, are shown the following information: • Main monitored lines status and illuminance level; • Average illuminance in the parking area; • Main presence sensors status; • Instantaneously electric consumption monitored by the multimeters; • Daily, weekly and monthly consumption; • Energy cost deduced by the internal fees; • Daily consumption graphs.

In the Smart Platform is possible to monitor and cross the consumption of different areas, comparing the actual energy cost the previous one in order to estimate the gained saving. The data gathered by the sensors can be then exported in CSV format in order to be reworked by the customer for its purposes.
