ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE AND OUR LADY OF THE LAKE/MOUNT CARMEL IS A ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WITH THE EUCHARIST AS THE CENTER OF ITS LIFE. OUR MISSION, AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST, IS TO BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY LEADING, NOURISHING AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN WORD AND SACRAMENT. FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 To the Parishioners of St. James-Our Lady of the Lake, Mt. Carmel: Let me say hello. While I know many of you, having said Mass at Carmel for 17 years while I was teaching school and having my Mom and sister live in the parish, I am new to some who have moved into the parish within the last four years. I have loved my time at St. James and I was saddened to leave when I left the Educational Ministry of the Archdiocese and became pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption in the Bronx. So it is kind of a “coming home” moment for me when Cardinal Dolan assigned me to replace my good friend, Fr. Anthony Sorgie as pastor. I look forward to working with you in the years to come and we will come to know each other much better in the years to come. Know that I pray for you and look forward to many fruitful years together. Msgr. Anthony D. MEN OF ST. JAMES

The “Men of St. James” come together for prayer and discussion to make what the Pope is calling for a reality here at St. James Church. It is also a place to re-kindle the fire that may have grown dim or just to meet other men who are also trying to be faithful Catholic men. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday’s at 7:00AM in the Carriage House. Come. “Open the door.” They called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith..." (Acts 14:27).

RCIA/RCIT

The RCIA/RCIT faculty here at our parish consists of four lay people; two deacons of our parish; and our pastor, Fr. Sorgie. The lay people and Fr. Sorgie are all “cradle Catholics” born and raised in the Catholic faith. Our two deacons are converts to Catholicism, having gone through their own RCIA Programs. We bring a wide range of experience to our classes. We use the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Tradition and our own personal experiences to share the Catholic faith with you. These programs are designed for people who have never been Baptized, people converting from another faith; or people who have been Baptized but have not yet received Confirmation. Individuals completing these programs will receive their sacraments at the Easter Vigil in 2016 where they will be brought into full Communion with the Catholic Church. If you or a loved one may be interested in our RCIA/RCIT Programs, please call the parish office at 845-225-2079 to contact Deacon Scott. Classes begin in September we would love to see you there.

SEPARATED AND DIVORCED MINISTRY

The Separated and Divorced Ministry of St. James and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a support group for those who have experienced loss or rejection through separation or divorce. Our meetings are open to all men and women of the community. We meet in the Carriage House on the 1ST and 3RD Fridays of each month from 7:30PM to 9:00PM. Please call Peter at 845-270-9996 for information.

WE WANT TO CONNECT WITH YOU

We are bringing a simple and dynamic communication tool to the parish called “flocknote”. It allows for all the “flock”, our parishioners, to be part of a secure web based email and text messaging service. With “flocknote” our Pastor can quickly and easily communicate with everyone, by email or text, or with any of the ministries and groups within the parish. Ministry and group leaders can communicate with all their members, and everyone in the parish can ask to receive communications from any of the groups. This free service is being offered to parishes throughout the whole Archdiocese, and we believe it will greatly enhance timely communications, help everyone stay informed of events, needs, issues, and be a platform to disseminate faith enhancing materials and information. It will permit quick and easy polling to seek parishioner and group member feedback. We would like everyone in the parish to join flocknote. The only information you need to share is name, email and/or cell number for text messages. You designate how you would like to receive notifications from the parish or from parish groups. All of your sensitive data is transmitted across an encrypted internet connection. Additionally your information is never sold, rented or given away to any third-parties (other than the Networks - like your church, ministry, team or organization - that you are connected to). Here’s how to join: Either go to www.flocknote.com/jamescarmel and register OR text SJAC to 84576 and follow the instructions that are sent back to you. This information is also posted on the Saint James website at www.stjamesapostle.org . Just look for the “flocknote” logo.

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF

ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CHURCH

The projects of our 50th Golden Anniversary will be coming to an end and a sincere thank you to the many people who supported them by your pledges and gifts. We will complete the 4 classrooms of St. James the Apostle School by the beginning of the school year, leaving two projects to be completed (1) the landscaping to the right of the Religious Education Building and (2) the blacktop and repair of the old parking lot at Our Lady of the Lake/Mt. Carmel. We will update the bulletin once each project is complete. Thank you for your generosity and support of St. James the Apostle Church and Our Lady of the Lake/Mt. Carmel. What an extraordinary 50th Golden Anniversary we have had!

ST. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM

278 Niches still available – 174 purchased

Our Terrace and Columbarium are open. We have already celebrated Mass at the new Altar and have 86 niches engraved and interred. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, please contact Mrs. Maureen Larkin at 845-225-2079 ext.105 Monday to Wednesday for information and an appointment. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones.

BULLYING WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY

SEPTEMBER 10, 2015 Some statistics about suicide:

800,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year (IASP, 2015).

Those bullied and those who bully were at increased risk for suicidal behavior (CDC 2014).

Those were both victim and perpetrator of bullying were at highest risk for suicidal behavior (CDC 2014).

Bullying and increased suicide risk go hand in hand. The theme of this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day is “Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives”. The act of showing care and concern to someone that is vulnerable may truly be the difference between life and death. Checking in with someone you are concerned about-just asking them if they are ok, lets them know they are loved and cared for. It is important for at risk individuals to have a strong social connection. Because isolation increases the risk of suicide, be vigilant with those you feel might be at risk. Some of the warning signs that an individual may be contemplating suicide are:

1. Changes in sleep patterns 2. Change in mood 3. Change in behavior (isolation) 4. Increase in aggression and /or impulsiveness 5. Agitation 6. Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness. 7. Saying things like “no one will miss me” or

“you would be better off without me” 8. Feeling ashamed or humiliated (after a break up,

poor test scores or other like events) 9. Talking about wanting to kill oneself 10. Drop in grades 11. Increased risk-taking behaviors 12. Giving away prized possessions

If you have any questions or suggestions for topics that you would like to see covered, leave your name and number at the parish office for Susan to contact you, or you may e-mail her at [email protected]. Place “Parish Nurse” in subject area. http://www.stopbullying.gov/blog/2014/09/09/world-suicide-prevention-day https://iasp.info/wspd/pdf/2015/2015_wspd_brochure.pdf Information compiled by: Susan Anello, MS, BSN RN

EMMANUEL HOUSE INTERNATIONAL

“Can You Help Mary?”Mary, like all our Moms and Moms-to-Be, is in crisis due to an unplanned pregnancy. She already has an older child and a baby and is worried how she will be able to take care of them as well as the new one on the way (especially since her abusive husband has just moved out, taking his paycheck with him). She wonders: “What am I to do? Who can I turn to? Who can help me?” Mary came to us hoping to find a real solution to her very real and difficult problems. Luckily we were here to show her how she can get “Out of Crisis & On Your Feet”. But we need your immediate financial help to be able to continue to have a place for Mary and other Moms and Moms-to-Be like her to come to receive support services (such as referrals to local resource providers for medical care, legal advice, food, housing, insurance) and material assistance (such as diapers, formula, clothes, baby equipment, reference materials) they need. For more information please visit us at www.EmmanuelHouseInternational.org. How will you choose to help today? No gift is too large or too small. Anything you give will make such a difference in Mary’s life and the lives of all our Moms and Moms-to-Be like Mary and will be so greatly appreciated. Your generous donation can be made by check and either sent to us at PO Box 478, Carmel, NY 10512 or dropped off at our office at 12 Fair Street, Carmel. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
