AGENDA8.5 F.

I will be able to recognize whether a chemical equation containing

coefficients is balanced or not and how that relates to the law of

conservation of mass by reading, and writing

while completing notes and activity.

PRECIPITATEFormation of a Solid

• A precipitate is a solid formed in a chemical reaction that is different from either of the reactants.

ENERGYTemperature Change

When two substances are combined, any increase or decrease in temperature is a sign of a chemical change. The temperature may change very suddenly or occur over a long period of time.

If the temperature rises and gives off heat, the reaction is said to be exothermic.

A drop in temperature indicates that the reaction is endothermic.

COLOR CHANGE

• A reaction has occurred if two solutions are mixed and there is a color change that is not simply the result of a dilution of one of the reactant solutions.

SOUND/ LIGHTWhen a substance is altered, light and sound indicate quick changes in temperature. A fireworks display is a good example of the presence of light and sound during a chemical reaction.

BUBBLESGas Formation

• If the reaction between two liquids or a solid and a liquid gives off gases, it is likely that a chemical change has occurred. Small bubbles that form inside the liquid underneath the surface are enough to indicate a chemical reaction is taking place.
