Doña Ana Arts Council'sVolunteer of the Month

Layla JacksonLayla Jackson, a senior at Alma d'Arte Charter High School, isour Volunteer of the Month for May. Layla startingvolunteering in the Rio Grande Theatre in early 2014, workingbackstage and helping with the lighting.

This past year, Layla has been working on her Apprenticeship Hours for Alma at the RioGrande Theatre. Last summer, Layla not only performed in the Missoula Children's Theatreproduction of Red Riding Hood, but she also volunteered to help with the thirdeighth gradersfor the entire week of Opera Camp. Layla also helped with both the Renaissance ArtsFaire






and the Las Cruces Arts Fair. She is truly a volunteer that can always be counted on to helpwith whatever project is at home.

After graduation, Layla plans to attend Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado where shewould like to pursue a degree in musical theater. We all wish her all the best and want her toknow that she will be missed!

Arlene Tugel

Exploring the grandeur of western lands is a favorite pastime of artist Arlene J Tugel. Shesplits her time between hiking and painting. The Las Crucen's watercolor paintings are featured in an exhibit called "Two Steps from theEdge" at the El Paso Electric Gallery in the Rio Grande Theatre. Most of the paintings werepainted en plein air (painted outdoors) while Tugel was standing near the edge of a cliff,arroyo, stream or even a sidewalk.



"My favorite time of day to paint is in the morning when sunlight and shadows play acrossplants, rocks and hillsides" Tugel said. "I remind myself that watercolor is all about revealinglight. So for me, painting is a constant reminder to let my own light shine." Arlene received her first art instruction in the seventh grade when she insisted on taking artrather than home economics. However, her curiosity about the natural world led to a 36yearcareer in soil science and natural resource conservation. Arlene's artistic desires wererekindled at a watercolor class in 1994. After retiring in 2010, she spent more and more timeon painting. "The scenery and light of the Southwest inspire me to paint" she said. "I become filled withawe and excitement that I express by using vibrant colors. I combine my artistic skills andscientific knowledge of landforms to draw attention to the shapes of the land. I want theviewer to connect to the beauty of the land, feel its energy, and value its importance to ourwellbeing." Striking colors are prominent in many of Tugel's paintings. Her love of watercolor and thespontaneity that can be achieved with this medium are evident. Scattered clouds paintedagainst azure blue skies frame New Mexico landscapes. Hillslopes glow softly in morninglight and plants reflect the blazing sun at noon. Neon lights bounce against city buildings. Tugel was awarded Signature Member status with the New Mexico Watercolor Society in2015.

The show runs May 3 through May 31 with an Artist Reception on May 6 from 5pm to 7pm.The gallery is located at 211 North Main Street, Las Cruces; hours are Monday throughFriday, 9 to 5 p.m. For details call (575) 5236403.

CAREER ART PATH JUNE 13 24, 2016

Career Art Path, is a two week immersion program in thevisual arts for middle school students. The program isdesigned for students entering the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8thgrades and will be held on June 1324, 2016 at the Almad'Arte Charter High School, 402 W Court Ave, LasCruces, NM. Tuition is $100 per student for the twoweekprogram; partial scholarships are available. The Arts

Council and program founders, Marian and Jordon Wolle, donate financial support to any



student who has an expressed interest in the visual arts, but who is unable to pay the fulltuition.

MISSOULA CHILDREN'S THEATRE JUNE 27 JULY 2, 2016

The Doña Ana Arts Council is proud tocontinue its tradition of bringing MissoulaChildren's Theatre to Las Cruces. TheMissoula Children's Theatre is now set forJune 27July 2, 2016. The open auditionswill be from 10:00 AM to noon on Monday, June 27 at the Rio Grande Theatre. Theperformances will be on Friday, July 1 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, July 2 at 11:00AM. For students entering grades 1 12. Tuition is $60 per student; partialscholarships are available. The show title this year is The Jungle Book.

OPERA STORYTELLERS JULY 1122, 2016

Opera Storytellers Summer Camp presented by the DonaAna Arts Council and the Santa Fe Opera returns in anexpanded version. The camp will be two weeks runningfrom July11 22, 2016 and will be presented at the RioGrande Theatre. The program is designed for studentsentering 3rd 8th grade. 25 30 students will useelements of opera: librettowriting, music composition,and theatrical staging to compose and perform their own

musical drama based on the Hero's Journey. Tuition is $300 per student for the twoweek camp; partial scholarships are available. Additional information andapplications are available by calling 5755236403.

The Doña Ana Arts Council is seeking nominations for the 2016 Community Arts Awards.The Arts Council annually honors special individuals and organizations who are actively

involved in promoting and enhancing the visual, performing and literary arts in ourcommunity through leadership, support and advocacy.

If you know individuals or organizations in the community who deserve to be recognized fortheir support of the arts and/or creative talent, this is your opportunity to nominate them foran award. A Nomination Form is attached to this newsletter and also available by calling

Award categories include The Papen Family Award, Debi True Rounds NewcomerAward, Arts in Education Award, Community Arts Award (individual or organization),

This juried event is organized by the Doña Ana Arts Council, a501(c)(3) organization that has supported the arts in Southern NewMexico for more than 45 years. All income generated by gatereceipts, booth fees and beverage sales goes to support arts ineducation and other Arts Council programs throughout the year.The Renaissance ArtsFaire features approximately 180 vendorbooths, and is recognized as one of the finest of its kind in theSouthwest. The event is widely promoted throughout the region inprint, radio, television and direct mailings. Attendance is 13,000 to18,000 visitors each year.

The Doña Ana Arts Council is a nonprofit organization whose mission is, through the arts,enhance the quality of life and develop the cultural, educational and economic growth of ourcommunity. Each year, the Arts Council offers a wide variety of programs in the visual andperforming arts to thousands of area students, sponsors such regularlyattended events as theRenaissance ArtsFaire and operates the Rio Grande Theatre. Among the many programs offered by the Arts Council are the Missoula Children's Theatre, aweeklong theatre experience open to all children ages 518 in the community; Youth At Risk/ Artists in Residency at La Casa Shelter for Domestic Violence, in which local artists conductfree weekly art workshops for children living at the shelter; Career Art Path (CAP), in which40 middle school children spend two weeks getting firsthand knowledge of the arts; KennedyCenter Partners in Education, working with the Las Cruces Public Schools to provideprofessional development for teachers and increased student access to the arts; and many moreprograms throughout each year.

In addition, the Arts Council sponsors such regularlyattended events as the Las Cruces ArtFair, the Renaissance ArtsFaire, and a variety of special events taking place in the Rio GrandeTheatre, including Every Other Tuesday, RGT Live! Open Mic and Film Las Cruces. None ofthis would be possible, however, without generous donations from sponsors and people likeyou.
