About this document

Purpose

This guide provides information on the 9500 MPR-A R5.1.0 software installation and upgrade procedures.

9500 MPR R5.1.0 is addressing both the ETSI and ANSI markets. This document provides instructions for installing/upgrading the 9500 MPR-A R5.1.0 software. The 9500 MPR-A R5.1.0 customer release notes describes features, any known issues and workarounds if applicable for the release. Please refer to 9500MPR-E Customer Release Notes for ETSI related documentation.

Important note: ETSI modem profiles only support E1 signals and ANSI modem profiles only support DS1/DS3 signals. Mixed configurations (unless explicitly documented) are not supported.

The 9500 MPR-E designates ETSI Software and 9500 MPR-e designates the MPT-HC deployed in a stand-alone mode.

Reason for revision

This revision provides updated build information about the ics02 version of software.

Intended audience

This document is intended for individuals who are responsible for the installation and upgrade of the 9500 MPR-A R5.1.0 software.

Precautions and Recommendations

Read and understand the following:

Note: Do not upgrade the Network Element Software unless it is known to be required.

Once the software is upgraded, it is very difficult to return to the R4.0.0 software release. If software needs to be returned to R4.0.0 release, CONTACT YOUR NEXT LEVEL OF SUPPORT BEFORE BEGINNING. • Read the entire software installation procedure before beginning. • If nodes that are to be upgraded are part of a ring, DLP-153 Upgrade a Ring Node to

R5.1.0 Software of the Operations and Administration manual (3EM23954AO) should be followed to properly stage the upgrade of each node in the ring to minimize traffic disruption.

• This procedure should be performed by a qualified Field Service Engineer trained on the 9500 MPR-A during an approved maintenance window.

• Note: Software version references of 5_1_0B, V05.01.0B, and R5.1.0 all correspond to the R5.1.0 version of the 9500 MPR-A software.

• A copy of the existing software (R4.0.0/R4.1.0/R4.2.0/R5.0.0) should be available to assist with any unexpected recovery operation.

WARNING This upgrade procedure will cause an extended traffic and management interruption during the activation of the R5.1.0 release software.

CAUTION Once the R5.1.0 release software has been activated, the R5.1.0 CT must be used to manage the NE.

General Steps 1. Install the R5.1.0 version of the 9500 MPR-A Craft Terminal software on the Craft

PC as applicable. 2. Login to the 9500 MPR using the Craft Terminal software. 3. Check and set system time 4. Pre-loading Operation Verification

Upgrade process

Proceed as follows:

Install Planning

16 If software installations will be done on sites remotely managed via the radio link, it is recommended to have personnel with R5.1.0 Craft Terminal access available at the remote site in the event that remote visibility is lost during the procedure.

Check and Set System Time (Recommended but Optional) Note: These steps are done only to ensure that any events reported during this procedure have the correct time stamp.

17 Login to the 9500 MPR using the Craft Terminal Software.

18 From the Craft Terminal main menu, select Configuration->NE Time

19 Check the Network Element Time displayed against the Operating System Time

Ensure all protection groups are on the Main (non-switched) state If a protection group is enabled on any module, review the status to ensure that the main entity is active. All protection groups should be in a normalized (non-switched) state. If assistance is needed in resolving issues that have caused a protection switch, please contact Alcatel-Lucent TAC. These issues should be resolved before proceeding with this install.

30 Make sure the Main DS1/DS3 module is Active on all protection groups.

Ensure No MPT-HCs are running High Gain Profiles If any MPT-HCs are running High Gain profiles, they must be changed to Standard. Beginning with R4.2.0 the 9500 MPR-A no longer supports High Gain profiles on MPT-HC radios. If these are in use in the current release they must be changed before upgrading to the R5.1.0. If assistance is needed in resolving this, please contact Alcatel-Lucent TAC. This should be resolved before proceeding with this install. Failure to do so will result in traffic outage until user manually corrects the profile following the upgrade.

34 From the Equipment View double click on any MPT-HC radios to bring up the JUSM MPT Main View.

35 On the Settings tab, ensure the profile option selected does NOT say High Gain.

Remove spare CSM if equipped (Recommended but optional)

43 If a spare CSM module is equipped, it is recommended that it is unseated at this time. This is not required, but provides a quick recovery option in case of issues during the upgrade. Once the upgrade is successfully completed it can be reinserted to mirror from main CSM. If issues arise during the upgrade unseat the main CSM, reinsert the spare CSM to recover and contact TAC for further assistance.

Install the R5.1.0 version of the MPR-A Craft Terminal on the craft PC.

44 If not previously installed, follow the instructions in the 9500 MPR-A Craft Terminal installation. See page 23.

Pre-install Operation Verification

45 It is recommended to disable any other ftp server that may be running on the Craft Terminal PC. Since the 9500 MPR-A Craft Terminal uses its own ftp server to perform the software download to the 9500 MPR-A shelf; another ftp server running on the PC can cause a conflict and prevent the download from occurring.

46 Launch the R5.1.0 version of the 9500 MPR-A Craft Terminal

47 Enter the host name or IP address of the 9500 MPR-A to be installed and click “OK”

48 Enter the username and password of an Administrator user.

A Configuring the Windows Firewall (Optional)

Purpose

If you are running with the Windows Firewall enabled, or another software-based firewall or anti-spyware on this PC or external devices, you may need to perform steps similar to the ones below.

NOTE: If you have performed these steps, and the Craft application will not run, check to see if the firewall or anti-spyware software is set to block programs without confirmation. If programs are being blocked without confirmation, change this setting to allow confirmation, and re-start the Craft application to determine if additional exceptions are necessary.

Procedure

The following steps are specific to the Windows Firewall available with Windows XP SP2. Other versions of Windows are similar.

1 To check if the Windows firewall is enabled, Open the Control Panel by selecting Start → Settings → Control Panel.

2 Double-Click the Windows Firewall icon to launch the Windows Firewall Settings Dialog.

3 If the radio button is set to Off, no further configuration is necessary. If the Windows firewall On radio button is enabled, the Windows Firewall is running, and the following steps need to be completed.

4 Ensure that the Don’t allow exceptions box is unchecked. If you are not able to make changes to this setting (eg. The setting is grayed out/disabled), your computer or network security policy may not allow you to make changes. Please contact your network or domain system administrator.
