Andrea:Thankyousomuch,Katie.I'msoexcitedtobeherewithyou.Katie:Well,I'mreallyexcitedtochat,andIalwayslovetostartwithsomeone'sstorybecauseIthinkitreallyhelpstoknowwheresomeone'scomingfrom.Youhadyourownhealthstoryandalsoanamazinglifestory,socanyoustartthereandtalkabouthowallofthesetriumphsthatyou'vehadcomefromthatandyourstoryofhowyougothere?Andrea:Yeah,absolutely,andIthinkit'ssotruethatmanyofusinthehealthspace,bothdealingwithourownhealthissuesandthoseofuswhoarehelpingotherswithhealthissues,wehaveoftenhadourownchallengesinthisarenaandforme,Iwasalwaysinterestedinfoodandhealth,butthingsreallykickedintohighgearwhenmyhusbandwasdiagnosedwithaveryaggressivebraintumorbackinAprilof2000whenIwasjustsevenweekspregnantwithourfirstchild.Andofcourse,thatwasreallyscary.Hewasgivenaboutsixmonthstoliveandduringthattime,wetook...youknow,wetooktheleadanddecidedweweregonnadoeverythingandanything.SothatrelatestowhatIcalla"yes,and"philosophy.It'snotlikewecouldsaynototheallopathictreatments.Wehadtosayyestothosebecauseitwasadiresituation,andwhatelsecouldwedoontopofthat?Soweintegratedeverythingandanythingwecouldthinkofthatwouldsupporthimthroughhistreatmentsthatwouldextendhislife.Hewasn'texpectedtolivetoseeoursonborn.Hedidlivetoseehersonbornandhedied2½yearslaterwhenoursonwas19monthsold.Sothatwasbackin2002,soI'vebeenasinglemomsincethen.Alsoremademycareer,putmyselfbackthroughschool,builtmywholebusiness,andlikeyousaid,Ihaveavirtualpractice.Wehaveprogramsforpeopleontheclientsideofthings,butIalsoteachpractitionersaroundtheglobe,andthat'sreallymypassion.SoallofthatthatIjustsharedwithyoualsoleadsintomyownhealthchallengesthatcameaboutalongtheway.Soasyoucanimagine,therewasatremendousamountofstresswhileIwaspregnant,andpregnancyinitselfisastressbecauseofthechanginghormonesthatcanleadtoautoimmuneorchronichealthconditionswhentheterrainisright,whenwehavetherightgeneticsandotherfactorsatplay.Andforme,therewasadditionalstressbecausetherewasthisscareandthisfearoflosingmybeloved,myhusband,sotherewastherightconditionstomanifestintoalaterdiagnosisofHashimoto's,whichIhadtodiscovermyselfbecausenobodywasproperlyidentifyingit.Thefieldhaschangedtremendouslyasyouknow,Katie,butitwasveryhardinthosedaystogetadiagnosisandtofigureoutwhattodo.Andfastforward,hereIam,likeyou,completelymanagingmyownchronichealthconditionsandteachingotherstodothesame.Katie:Yeah,andIknowwebothhavehadthethyroidstrugglesinthepastandIwanttoreallydefineforanyonewho'slistening.Ithinkthetermfunctionalmedicineisusedalot,butcanyoutalkaboutthedifferencebetweenfunctionalmedicineandfunctionalnutrition,andwhywhatyoudoissospecificallyunique?Andrea:Yeah,Iwouldloveto.So,youknow,Ireallywanttoapplaudfunctionalmedicine,andwhatIdoisaderivativeofthoseprinciples.Andthoseprinciplestome,theprimaryprinciplesarethatweworkinpartnership,thephysicianorthepractitionerandthepatientworkinpartnership,thatwearealwayslookingfortherootcause,sowe'reasking“why”,notjust“what”sowe'renotjustsaying,"Oh,youhavethissign,symptomordiagnosis.Here'swhatyoudo."Insteadwe'resaying,"Whoareyouandwhatdoweneedtodointhissituationforyou?"Andthatweworkinsystems.Andthosesystemsarereallyabouttheinterconnectionofthesystemsinthebody,aswellashowweprovidesystemsinwhichpeoplecanthinkintoandtakepersonalcare.SooneofthethingsthatIalwayssayaboutfunctionalmedicineisthatwesay,outofthosethreetenetsthatIjustshared,thatthepractitionerandthepatientworkinatherapeuticrelationshipandpartnership,andwhenwehearthat,weapplaudthedoctor.AndIwouldliketoshiftthatandreallyapplaudthepatientandenablethepatienttobecomeapartnerintheirownhealthcare,andthat'swheretherealmof

whatarethreethingsthatyouthinkpeoplereallydon'tunderstandwhenitcomestofunctionalmedicineandhealth,andespeciallyinyourareaofexpertise,andhowdoyouanswerthose?Andrea:Yeah,that'sagreatquestion,andIthinkthisanswermaynotmakemesopopularormaybe...fallintotherealmthatyouweretalkingabout,Katie,wherelikemaybethisisn'tsosexy.SoIthinkthatwhenwe'relookingforrootcauseresolution,wehavetorecognizethatittakescommitment,thatitactuallytakestrackingandsteppingback,andkindofmovingintothatpauseandknowingthatthereisnoone-size-fits-all.Andjusttokindofdouble-clickonthatthoughtforamoment,I'malwaysalittleshockedthatwearesocelebratoryofthewholenotionofindividualityinourculturethat,youknow,wehaveourSpotifysthatareuniquetousandpeoplebuybrasinhalfsizesbecausewe'reunique,orourjeansorourbedmattressesthatformtothecontourofourbody,butwhenitcomestoourhealth,wearestilllookingfortheone-size-fits-allapproachanditjustdoesn'texist.Therearethingsthataretrueforallofus,I'mnotgonnadenythat,butscienceiswayfaraheadofus.Scienceistalkingaboutthefactthatthemakeupofthegeneintheindividualmattersmorethanthediagnosis.Soifwetakeadiagnosislikecancer,youcanputacellin...twopeoplecanhavebreastcancer,butitdoesn'tmatterwherethosecancersexist.Itmattershowthosecellsbehave,andthattellsusalotmoreinformationthanwhereitis.Sotowardthatend,justbecausewebothhavethyroidissues,doesn'tmeanwe'regonnarespondtothesamethings.Again,therearesomethingsthatmayfallintothenon-negotiablesthataretrueforallofus,likewetalkedaboutwithdietandnutrients,butthenwedogetdowntothatspecificity,andthattakescommitment.Sothat'snumberonethatIwanttosay.Numbertwoisthatittakestime,notjusttimeintracking,butthatthecondition,likeIsaid,thedysfunctioncameaboutbecauseanumberoffactors,notjustonething.Disease,again,startswithdysfunctionanddysfunctioncanoccuronmultiplelevels:physiological,physical,cognitive,psychological,spiritual.There'sanumberofthingsthathappenedinyourlife,whichiswhywespendtimeonthattimelinethatalladdedupinaconfluencetotipthescalestoleadtothesigns,symptoms,ordiagnosisthatyou'reexperiencing.Andtherefore,ittakestimetolookatandaddressthosethings,andthat'sokay.Aslongasyou'reinaprocess,it'sokay,andthatprocesssometimeslookslikeforwardmomentum,butitactuallygoesupanddownandtheremaybeplaceswhereyouhaveaflareorwhereitfeelslikeastepback.Andyoutakeeachofthoseopportunitiestolearnandmoveforward.Whatdidthatexperiencetellme?So,numberone,ittakescommitment.Numbertwo,ittakestimebecausethisdidn'tmanifestovernight,andnumberthree,Ireallywanttosaythatfrommyareaofresearchandexpertise,youthepatientaretheheroonyourhealthcareteam.Thereisnoonepill,protocol,orpractitionerwho'sgonnasolveallyourproblems.Youaretheonewhoactuallyhasmoreinfluenceoverwhathappensinyourlife.Youaretheheroandifyoulookatthehero'sjourneyandwhatittakes,youmayneedaguide.Youmayneedseveralguides,butit'syourjourneyandyou'realreadyonit,andyou'realreadyonthehero'sjourneygettingtowhereyouneedtogo.Sothosearethreethingsthat,likeIsaid,maynotbesosexy,butIhaveseeninallofthepeople,thousandsofpeoplethatI'vebeenabletoworkwith,thatI'vehadtheprivilegetoworkwith,thatthisistheprocessthatreallyworksforrootcauseresolution.Katie:Ithinkthatlastpointissokey,thatinyourhealth,youcan'toutsourceit.It'soneofthosethingsthatyoutrulyhavetodoyourselfandyou'retheonewho'sputtingintheeffort.Andnooneisgonnacareasmuchaboutyourhealth,orshould,asyoudo,andIthinkthatbecomingyourownadvocateandyourownresearcherand,insomeways,yourownscientistisabigpartofthekey.Andyoucanuse,likeyousaid,toolsfrommanydifferentthingsandmanydifferentsupplementsorwhateveritendsupbeingforyou,butbecomingyourownadvocateandtakingownershipforthatisso,soimportantandIlovethatyoubroughtthatup.Andforanyonewhowantstoconnectwithyou,wherecantheyfindyouonline?I'llofcoursehave
