Workshop on Future‑proofing flats: overcominglegal barriers to energy improvements in privateflats

.

This event was held in London on the 17 March and organized byWestminster Council, Professor Susan Bright of New College, Oxfordand Future Climate to focus on what has hitherto been an under­explored issue: the legal and consent barriers to the promotion ofenergy saving improvements in blocks of flats, with a particular focuson private sector blocks.

The Oxford Human Rights Hub launchesʹRightsUpʹ podcast series

.

In May, the Oxford Human Rights Hubreleased the first episode of RightsUp, aninterdisciplinary podcast series dedicatedto exploring the big human rights issuesof the day, bringing in new perspectiveson human rights law from all over theworld. RightsUp features interviews withexperts, academics, practicing lawyers,activists and policy makers who are atthe forefront of tackling contemporaryand complex human rights issues. 

Topics covered include revenge pornography, the implications ofhuman rights law for businesses, the death penalty and genderjustice in different global contexts. The series is written, edited andproduced by Kira Allmann, Max Harris and Dr Laura Hilly, with supportfrom the Oxford Human Rights Hub and The Oxford ResearchCentre in the Humanities. The podcast is available for subscriptionand download through iTunes U, and each episode is accompanied byinformation and resources provided by the Oxford Human RightsHub.

Magna Carta in Context.

The conference explored the constitutional legacy of Magna Carta andhow the charter – and the myths it inspired – influenced the diffusionof constitutionalism across the globe.

On Friday 5 June, theObligations DiscussionGroup held a paneldiscussion on therecent Supreme Courtdecision in AIB Group(UK) Plc v Mark Redler& Co [2014] UKSC58. The proceedingstook place in the MBIal Jaber Auditorium atCorpus Christi College.It attracted over 60enthusiastic audiencemembers keen todiscuss the intricaciesof this highlycontroversial case.

Contracts in Commercial Law conference

James Goudkamp will be co­convening with Oxford alumnae ProfessorSimone Degeling and Justice James Edelman a conference entitled'Contracts in Commercial Law'. The conference will take place in Sydneyon 18­19 December 2015. It is expected that it will be the largestprivate law conference in terms of delegates ever to have been held inthe southern hemisphere. Numerous Faculty members will deliverpresentations at the conference, along with some of the mostdistinguished judges and academics from a wide range of jurisdictions.A discount is available for Oxford Faculty of Law students and alumnae.Full particulars about the conference are available on the conferencewebsite.

Human Rights Graduate Research Workshop.

The Oxford Human Rights Hub was pleased to host the first HumanRights Graduate Research Workshop on 5 June. This eventbrought together graduate students and academics working in thefield of human rights. It proved a fruitful opportunity for researchersto present their work and receive substantive feedback in a supportiveenvironment, as well an event to showcase the rich spectrum ofhuman rights law work currently being undertaken at the OxfordFaculty of Law. This is the first of what is planned to be an annualevent.

Particular thanks to Professor Sandra Fredman and Professor AlanBogg for opening the workshop, to our keynote speaker, ProfessorMichael Newton from Vanderbilt University Law School, and toOUP and Hart Publishing for coming to speak on publishing paths forearly career researchers. . . .
