Introduction This illustrated bibliography is intended to provide a guide on where to find information on the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service and its heritage. This heritage includes the running of naval hospital ships and conducting underway replenishment-at-sea. It lists primary and secondary historical and technical sources – books, journals, press material, reports, lectures to professional and industrial bodies, product leaflets and grey literature. Also listed are known official and semi-official documents preserved as part of our national memory in The National Archives (formerly the Public Record Office) Kew, Naval Historical Branch (Portsmouth), National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, the Imperial War Museum, London, The British Library and the ICRC, Geneva.

Every effort has been made to cite those publications that have an emphasis upon the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, its history, heritage, administration, functions and ships. Annotations are included where the curator/author felt that the titles are not self-explanatory.

This bibliography is arranged alphabetically in three sections Books, Articles (including monographs and papers) and Selected official records.

Initially this bibliography was drawn from the research undertaken for the publication: Royal Fleet Auxiliary – A century of service by Thomas A Adams and James R Smith, published June 2005 by Chatham (London), ISBN 1 86176-259-3, on behalf of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Association.

It has since been updated and expanded in particular to update information from official records in The National Archives (Spring 2014).
