02SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2021

Bahrain and India have enjoyed a fruitful rela-tionship on the back of their mutual intent to

promote harmony, commerce and socio-economic growth for all sec-tions of society. This is best reflect-ed in the warm and healthy bond shared between the leaders and the people of the two countries.

Bahrain is home to over 350,000 Indians, many of whom consider the nation their home. This has been possible because the wise and hu-manitarian rulers of Bahrain have fostered a community that allows Indian expats to build a respectful life for themselves, while providing

Lulu International Exchange: Saluting the healthy spirit of Bahrain-India relations

them the privilege of an advanced and tolerant society.

As a responsible financial services provider, Lulu International Exchange is honored to have played its part in improving the lives of people in both countries. Since our inception in 2013, we have diver-sified our network through exception-al consumer care, technological innova-tions, credible partnership and full ad-herence to the local laws and regulations.

Today, we operate 15 branches across the length and breadth of Bahrain, with

consumer convenience at the heart of everything. To make the payments process simple and reliable for our consumers, we have rolled out our

payments app, Lulu Mon-ey, which is today aligned with the futuristic vision of the nation to become a global payments hub.

We have also been active responders to the government’s call for businesses to nurture and

support vulnerable sections of society through our various CSR initiatives.

We owe our gratitude to HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, ruler of Bahrain, HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa,

Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, other members of the royal family, Government and the people of the Kingdom for provid-ing us the support to efficiently deliver our responsibility to our consumers.

As India and Bahrain celebrate 50 glorious years of diplomatic relations, I convey my heartfelt wishes to the people of both coun-tries, on behalf of the entire Lulu Financial Group. May the two na-tions continue on their respective path of prosperity while simulta-neously building great value to-gether as beacons of global hope, opportunity and progress.

The Central Bank of Bah-rain has also directed BENEFIT Company to im-

plement and operate the Bahrain Electronic Cheque System with the latest technologies.

BENEFIT has been operating the Electronic Cheque Clear-ing System in Bahrain since its launch in 2012.

The system also enjoys ap-propriate legal frameworks and legal controls.

Electronic Communications and Transactions Law issued by Decree No. (54) of 2018 and De-cree No. (55) of 2018 regarding negotiable electronic records

secures electronic transactions. Decree No. (45) of 2021 states

that the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority is the ad-ministrative authority in charge of the Electronic Communica-tions and Transactions Law.

BECS, operated by BENEFIT, is the first e-Cheque system around the globe that caters to individual and corporate bank customers.

The system also provides elec-tronic cheque service through

mobile apps such as the Bene-fitPay and the e-cheque appli-cation.

Electronic cheque services allow requesting an electronic chequebook from retail banks, check issuance services such as

editing, signing and depositing. All these are done electronically without the customer having to visit the bank.

Individuals can register elec-tronically for e-Cheque through the BenefitPay application. As for companies, they can register through retail banks to obtain a

dedicated (e-Cheque) applica-tion to avail of online e-Cheque service.

Electronic cheque application allows companies to have mul-tiple persons authorised to sign checks online while applying any limits on each authorised signatory.

KEY TAKEAWAYSn An electronic cheque is designed to perform the same function online as a conventional paper cheque.

n The most frequently used versions of the electronic cheque is the direct deposit system offered by employers.

n Generally, the costs associated an electronic cheque are much lower than those associated with paper cheques.

n An electronic cheque is guarded by more security features than standard paper cheques.

When did the first cheque came? The first cheques started cropping up in the United States

toward the end of the 17th century, and the first printed versions were introduced in 1762 by British banker Lawrence Childs. Before that, cheques were simply written out by hand, sort of like IOUs.

How does an electronic cheque work?

With an eCheck, the money is electronically withdrawn from the payer’s account, sent to the payee’s banking institution, and then electronically deposited into the payee’s account. This is all done similar to paper check processing, just electronically.

04SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2021

Now that the weather is get-ting noticeably cooler, we are seeing more and more people

out walking in the walking paths that have been thoughtfully incorporated into our urban spaces by planners. The months of October to March are decidedly better to incorporate new exercise resolutions since the hot sum-mer is waning at this time.

While I am happy to see people of all ages exercise, it is particularly good to note that women are now taking their health seriously. Once a taboo topic, outdoor exercise and organised phys-ical activity classes for women have become quite accepted for women in Bahrain. Indeed, the K i n g d o m has a history of getting involved in w o m e n ’ s athletic ac-tivities and h a s r e g u -larly field-ed women’s teams in lo-cal, regional and interna-tional com-p e t i t i o n s , performing t o va r y i n g degrees of success.

The wom-en’s nation-al footbal l team, formed in 2003, was the first na-tional wom-en’s football squad in the Gulf region and in 2004, Bahrain par-ticipated in a football tournament in Amman and in 2005 took part in the West Asian Championship, also in the Jordanian capital. In field track, Bah-rain produced champion Ruqayya Al Ghasra who became in 2004 the first athlete to take part in an Olympics wearing a hijab.

Women have brought back medals and glory to Bahrain from the Olym-pics and the Paralympics - Bahraini amputee and para-athlete, Shaikha Al Shaiba, who is a regular participant in the half-Ironman triathlons is a shin-ing example.

While we are lucky in Bahrain that the sports community has created an atmosphere conducive to women athletes participating whole-heart-edly in the national sports scene, it is essential for us to push the envelope a bit more – for example, Bahraini corporate sponsorships for women’s sports training and participation in international tournaments, better me-dia coverage of women’s victories and their trouble spots so that those who can make a difference will know and help, sports programmes for women and scholarships to tap talent at a young age and give economic support – all of these will undoubtedly give a boost to Bahraini women’s sports.

Women have brought back medals and glory to Bahrain from the Olympics and the Paralympics - Bahraini amputee and para-athlete, Shaikha Al Shaiba, who is a regular participant in the half-Ironman triathlons is a shining example.

Top US congress officials welcome Bahrain’s Labour market reforms TDT | Manama

Bahrain’s efforts to devel-op the labour market and adopt international stand-

ards in protecting and preserving the rights of labour parties re-ceived the praise of US Congress staff visiting Bahrain.

The delegation affirmed that they had noticed an integrated institutional work by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority and its partners, citing tireless efforts to review and develop procedures to enhance the work environment and ensure justice and fairness.

The delegation highlighted the Kingdom’s pioneering efforts in combating trafficking in persons, including the annual report of

the US Department of State for combating people trafficking, in which Bahrain maintained its tier-1 status for the fourth year in a row.

The comments came as the delegation of US Congress staff

visited the LMRA in the presence of Deputy CEO for Resources and Services, Ashraf Hafeth Emam, Director of Grievances and Pro-tection, Shereen Khalil Al-Saati, and representatives of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

LMRA officials reviewed the measures implemented by the Authority to address the direct and indirect effects of the novel Coronavirus pandemic on the la-bour market.

The meeting highlighted the key projects and initiatives launched by LMRA to protect workers’ rights, including the Wage Protection System launched in May 2021. BisB launches Apple Pay TDT | Manama

Bahrain Islamic Bank (BisB) has brought Apple Pay to its

cardholders, transforming tra-ditional payments by offering a simplified, secure, and private way to pay.

With Apple Pay on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac, BisB customers can now con-duct  secure,  and convenient purchases in stores, in apps and on websites, replacing transactions that involve han-dling traditional credit cards, touching physical buttons, and

further eliminating the need to use cash.

When customers use a credit or debit card enabled with Ap-ple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Num-ber is assigned, which is en-crypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on devices. Each transaction is authorised with a one-time unique dynam-ic security code.

The convenience of Apple Pay enables BisB’s cardholders to pay using an iPhone or Apple

Watch at points of sale, be it a store, parking lot, restaurant, or café across the Kingdom. This provides a whole new level of convenience, where BisB customers no longer need to fill out lengthy forms, or type in shipping and billing information.

Every Apple Pay purchase is secure because it is authenti-cated with Face ID or touch ID, or via the passcode of an iPhone.

Apple Pay is also available on-line via Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac computers.

Square CEO Dorsey says looking to build a bitcoin mining system - tweetReuters

Square Inc Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey said

on Friday the fintech firm is looking to build a bitcoin mining system based on cus-tom silicon and open source for individuals as well as businesses.

This would add to Square’s existing bitcoin-focused projects including a busi-ness to build an open de-veloper platform, as well as a hardware wallet for the cryptocurrency.

“If we do this, we’d follow our hardware wallet model: build in the open in collabo-ration with the community,” Dorsey said in a tweet.

A team led by Square’s hard-ware lead, Jesse Dorogusker, will investigate requisites for Square to take on the pro-ject to build a bitcoin mining system.

In his Twitter thread, Dors-ey also said that silicon design or chip design is too concen-trated into a few companies, leading to supply constraints.

Shares of Square were up about 1% in extended trading.

On Friday, bitcoin topped $60,000 for the first time in six months, since China’s crack-down on bitcoin trading and mining, as hopes grew that US regulators would allow a fu-tures-based exchange-traded fund (ETF), a move likely to open the path to wider invest-ment in digital assets.

NASA’s asteroid hunter Lucy soars into sky with diamondsNASA launches first space probe to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids

• Spacecraft with name inspired by a skeleton and the Beatles, and with lab-grown gems, starts 12-year quest

AP | Washington

A NASA spacecraft named Lucy rocketed into the sky

with diamonds Saturday morn-ing on a 12-year quest to explore eight asteroids.

Seven of the mysterious space rocks are among swarms of as-teroids sharing Jupiter’s orbit, thought to be the pristine left-overs of planetary formation.

An Atlas V rocket blasted off before dawn, sending Lucy on a roundabout journey spanning nearly 4 billion miles (6.3 bil-lion kilometers). Researchers grew emotional describing the successful launch — lead scien-tist Hal Levison said it was like witnessing the birth of a child. “Go Lucy!” he urged.

Lucy is named after the 3.2 million-year-old skeletal re-mains of a human ancestor found in Ethiopia nearly a half-century ago. That discovery

got its name from the 1967 Bea-tles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” prompting NASA to send the spacecraft soaring with band members’ lyrics and other luminaries’ words of wis-dom imprinted on a plaque. The spacecraft also carried a disc made of lab-grown diamonds for one of its science instru-ments.

In a prerecorded video for NASA, Beatles drummer Rin-go Starr paid tribute to his late colleague John Lennon, cred-ited for writing the song that

inspired all this.“I’m so excited — Lucy is go-

ing back in the sky with dia-monds. Johnny will love that,” Starr said. “Anyway, if you meet anyone up there, Lucy, give them peace and love from me.”

The paleoanthropologist be-hind the fossil Lucy discovery, Donald Johanson, had goose bumps watching Lucy soar — “I will never look at Jupiter the same ... absolutely mind-ex-panding.” He said he was filled with wonder about this “inter-section of our past, our present

and our future.”“That a human ancestor who

lived so long ago stimulated a mission which promises to add valuable information about the formation of our solar system is incredibly exciting,” said Johan-son, of Arizona State University, who travelled to Cape Canaveral for his first rocket launch.

Lucy’s $981 million mission is the first to aim for Jupiter’s so-called Trojan entourage: thousands — if not millions — of asteroids that share the gas giant’s expansive orbit around the sun. Some of the Trojan as-teroids precede Jupiter in its orbit, while others trail it.

News in brief u Australian police said on Saturday they seized the largest heroin shipment

ever detected in the country, worth an estimated A$140 million ($104 million), and arrested a Malaysian national over the importation of the illicit drug. The 450-kg (990-pound) shipment - as heavy as a grand piano - was detected in a sea freight container of ceramic tiles sent from Malaysia

and addressed to a Melbourne business, the police said in a statement.

u A former governor of Iran’s Central Bank, Valiollah Seif, was sentenced on Saturday to 10 years in prison on corruption charges involving the mismanagement of millions of dollars, the judiciary said. Seif and two of his deputies, who also received jail terms, were found guilty of “disturbing the foreign exchange market, the country’s economic climate and mismanagement,” a judiciary spokesman was quoted as saying by state media.

u An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 struck Indonesia’s Bali island

on Saturday morning, killing at least three people, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said. The quake affected the Karangasem and Bangli districts on the eastern side of the tourist island and a search has been concluded, the agency said in a statement, but authorities were continuing to monitor situation. A landslide triggered by the quake killed two of the

victims, the agency said. A third, a three-year old girl, was killed by falling debris.

u The Taliban will announce a framework that allows girls to attend school in Afghanistan “soon,” a senior United Nations official said, after four weeks in which Afghan boys have been allowed a secondary education but girls have not. “The de facto minister of education told us that they are working on a framework, which they will announce soon, that will allow all girls to go to secondary school, and we are expecting that to happen very soon,” UNICEF deputy executive director Omar Abdi said at the United Nations in New York.

u The Canadian city of Iqaluit in

the country’s northern territory said lab results confirmed that fuel had entered its water supply, officials announced on Friday. Analysis of samples from one of the city’s water tanks found “exceedingly high levels of various fuel components,” Amy Elgersma, Iqaluit’s chief administrative officer, said, adding it was likely diesel or kerosene. Residents in Iqaluit, the capital of

Canada’s northernmost territory Nunavut, which borders Greenland, reported fuel odors in the water over the weekend, but the source was not clear.

ASEAN excludes Myanmar junta leader from summit in rare move

Reuters | Bangkok

Southeast Asian countries will invite a non-politi-

cal representative from My-anmar to a regional summit this month, delivering an unprecedented snub to the military leader who led a coup against an elected ci-vilian government in Feb-ruary.

The decision taken by foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at an emergency meeting on Friday night, marks a rare bold step for the consen-sus-driven bloc, which has traditionally favoured a policy of engagement and non-interference.

Singapore’s foreign min-istry said on Saturday the move to exclude junta chief Min Aung Hlaing was a “difficult, but necessary, decision to uphold ASEAN’s credibility”.

The statement cited a lack of progress made on a roadmap to restore peace in Myanmar that the junta had agreed to with ASEAN in April.

Federal prosecutors on Fri-day accused a US Capitol

Police officer of obstructing a probe into the Jan. 6 attack on the government building by urging a participant to destroy Facebook posts showing him inside, warning that he could be prosecuted.

In a six-page indictment, prosecutors said that Michael

Riley, a Capitol Police officer for more than 25 years, had be-

come a Facebook friend with the suspect identified as “Per-son 1” on Jan. 1 and then di-rect messaged the individual on Jan. 7.

“Hey (Person 1), im a capitol police officer who agrees with your political stance,” Riley said in the message. “Take down the part about being in the building they are currently investigating and everyone who was in the building is going to be charged.”

New crew docks at China’s first permanent space stationAP | Beijing

Chinese astronauts began Saturday their six-month

mission on China’s first per-manent space station, after suc-cessfully docking aboard their spacecraft.

The astronauts, two men and a woman, were seen float-ing around the module before speaking via a live-streamed video.

The new crew includes Wang Yaping, 41, who is the first Chi-nese woman to board the Tian-gong space station, and is ex-pected to become China’s first female spacewalker.

“We’ll co-operate with each other, carefully conduct maneu-vers, and try to accomplish all tasks successfully in this round of exploration of the universe,” said Wang in the video.

The space travelers’ Shen-z h o u -1 3 s p a c e c r a f t w a s launched by a Long March-2F rocket at 12:23 a.m. Saturday and docked with the Tianhe core module of the space sta-tion at 6:56 a.m.

The three astronauts en-tered the station’s core mod-ule at about 10 a.m., the China

Manned Space Agency said. They are the second crew

to move into China’s Tian-gong space station, which was launched last April. The first crew stayed three months.

The new crew includes two veterans of space travel — Zhai Zhigang, 55, and Wang. The third member, Ye Guangfu, 41, is making his first trip to space.

The mission’s launch was seen off by a military band and supporters singing “Ode to the Motherland,” underscor-ing national pride in the space program, which has advanced rapidly in recent years.

The crew will do three space-walks to install equipment in preparation for expanding the station, assess living conditions in the Tianhe module, and con-duct experiments in space med-icine and other fields.

Drake wanted ‘Degrassi’ character out of wheelchair, got lawyerFox | Los Angeles

Drake allegedly threatened legal action to get his “De-

grassi: The Next Generation” character out of a wheelchair, according to a former writer for the show.

The rapper, born Aubrey Graham, famously portrayed Jimmy Brooks, a student who was shot and thus had to use

a wheelchair, on the teen drama from 2001 to 2008.

But writer James Hurst now claims the then-child

actor lawyered up to get his character back on his

feet.“There was a

letter from a law firm in Toronto, and it was from Aubrey. It was an odd letter that said, ‘Aubrey

Graham will not return to

‘Degrassi’ Season 6 as Jimmy Brooks

unless his injury is healed, and he’s out of the wheelchair,’” Hurst alleged to The AV Club in an interview published Thurs-day. “I said, ‘Get him down here.’”

Hurst recalled confronting Drake, now 34, over the let-ter, saying, “He came in and was like, ‘What letter? I don’t know about that.’ And I said, ‘All right, I understand. But how do you feel about the wheel-chair?’”

Drake alleged-ly claimed that

his rapper pals had made fun of him for being in a wheelchair, to which Hurst explained why the role was so important.

“He’s like, ‘All my friends in the rap game say I’m soft

beca use I ’m i n a wheelchair,’” Hurst remembered. “And I said, ‘Well, tell your friends in the rap game that you

got shot. How much harder can you get? You got shot, and you’re in a wheel-chair.’ He was l ike, ‘ Y e a h , yeah.’”

H u r s t said that Drizzy was

“ s o n i c e ” and “apolo-getic” in the end and didn’t proceed fur-ther with any legal action.

Britney Spears says she wishes she ‘lived in another country’Fox | Los Angeles

Britney Spears is giving fans an update amid changes in her 13-year-

long conservatorship and says she’s not happy living in Amer-ica.

Since 2008, the 39-year-old singer’s father Jamie had over-seen her conservatorship un-til late September when judge Brenda Penny suspended him from his role after the star lobbed allegations of oppressive behavior against him.

Now, Spears has taken to Ins-tagram to share her recent mus-ings about her life alongside a photo of a Christmas tree, which seems to be set up in her home.

“I’ll just be honest and say I’ve waited so long to be free from the situation I’m in … and now that it’s here I’m scared to do anything because I’m afraid I’ll make a mistake !!!” she began

in the lengthy caption. “For so many years I was always told if I succeeded at things, it could end … and it never did !!!”

The star said she “worked so hard” and is “very happy” that her conservatorship situation is changing, but noted that “there’s a lot of things that scare me!!!”

“The paps run through the trees and onto the road when I drive home and it’s creepy !!!!” s h e ex p l a i n e d . “And I have to drive by an elemen-tary school … the kids are a big deal … but so am I !!!!! I don’t like that they try to scare me and jump out like they do ... it’s like they want me to do something

crazy !!!”She echoed that she’s “fearful

of doing something wrong” and said she “won’t be posting as much in a world where it’s our

liberty to be free.”The star then said she

“started to experience” liberty when she was given the keys to her car just four months

ago after 13 years.“I haven’t done

a n y t h i n g t o b e treated the way I have for the past 13 years !!!” Spears said before slam-ming the American justice system: “I’m

disgusted with the system and wish I lived in another country !!!”

The “Toxic” singer revealed the significance

of the Christmas tree pictured in her post too. She’s celebrat-ing the holiday “way early” this year.

“I believe any reason to find more joy in life is a good idea … and it’s no secret that I’ve been through it in the past … so I might have to do things a little differently from now on !!!” she continued. “Lord have mercy on my family’s souls if I ever do an interview !!!”

According to Fox News, after Hill had earlier polite-ly asked his followers on Instagram not to com-ment on his body, good or bad, Stone had posted a comment, asking, “Can I say you look good cuz u do,” with a fire emoji.

The comment from Stone’s han-dle drew the ire of some Hill fans, who posted re-plies to the ‘Ca-sino’ and ‘Basic Instinct’ star such as, “read the room” and “He literally just said no, Sharon Stone. Sheesh.”

‘Schitt’s Creek’ star Noah Reid replaces Armie Hammer in Broadway’s ‘The Minutes’ANI | Washington

Canadian-American actor Noah Reid, best known

for causing David Rose to fall madly in love on ‘Schitt’s Creek’, has joined the cast of ‘The Minutes’, a new play by Tracy Letts that was in pre-views in March 2020 when Broadway closed down due to COVID.

According to Variety, he has replaced Armie Hammer, who was originally starring in the play but has now been accused by multiple women of sexual assault. Hammer has denied the claims and said that any

sexual relationships were con-sensual, but the Los Angeles Police Department has opened an investigation and he has been fired from several films.

‘The Minutes’ is directed by Anna D. Shapiro. The original Broadway company members include Tony Award nominee Ian Barford, Tony Award win-ner Blair Brown, Cliff Cham-berlain, Tony Award nominee K. Todd Freeman, Danny Mc-Carthy, Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, Sally Murphy, Tony Award nominee Austin Pendleton and Jeff Still. Letts will also appear in the play.

Man Utd lose at Leicester, five-star Liverpool go topLeicester City won a rollercoaster of a match against Manchester United to put more pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjær

• Salah’s latest stunner caps Liverpool’s 5-0 win at Watford

AFP | London

Manchester United suc-cumbed to a first away league defeat for 30

games by losing 4-2 at Leicester as Liverpool stormed to the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 demolition of Watford on yesterday.

Manchester City moved into second with a 2-0 win over Burnley, while Chelsea can move back to the top of the table when they travel to Brentford later in the day.

But the focus will fall on Unit-ed manager Ole Gunnar Sol-skjaer after his side failed to win for the third consecutive Premier League game.

United led at the King Power thanks to Mason Greenwood’s spectacular strike, but were quickly pegged back by Youri Tielemans’ dinked finish be-yond David de Gea.

A flurry of four goals in the fi-nal 12 minutes then condemned Solskjaer’s men to a first defeat on the road since January 2020.

Caglar Soyuncu put Leicester in front before Marcus Rashford equalised on his first appear-ance of the season after shoul-der surgery.

Straight from kick-off, Unit-ed’s leaky defence was breached once more as Jamie Vardy smashed home and Patson Da-ka’s first Leicester goal in stop-page time sealed a much-needed win for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

‘No one better’ than Salah Roberto Firmino scored his

first hat-trick since 2018 as Liv-erpool ran riot at Vicarage Road in Claudio Ranieri’s first match as Watford boss.

But it was Mohamed Salah who again took most of the plaudits for another stunning solo goal to take his tally for the season to 10 in as many games.

“In this moment it is clear that there is no one better than him,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp of the Egyptian.

Salah helped open the flood-gates with a defence-splitting pass that teed up Sadio Mane to score his 100th Premier League goal.

Firmino would have been un-available due to a late return from international duty but for an injury that forced him to withdraw from the Brazil squad.

He tapped home his first goal from James Milner’s cross be-fore half-time and took advan-tage of another open goal after Ben Foster parried Craig Cath-cart’s attempted clearance.

Salah left four Manchester City defenders trailing to score in a thrilling 2-2 draw before the international break and pulled off a similar feat before curling into the far corner.

Firmino then completed the

rout in stoppage time.City did not need to hit top

gear to see off Burnley at the Etihad and remain one point behind Liverpool at the top of the table.

Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were on target either side of half-time for Pep Guar-diola’s men.

Wolves produced a miracu-lous comeback from 2-0 down with 10 minutes remaining to win 3-2 at Aston Villa.

Danny Ings and John McGinn had put the hosts in a command-ing position at Villa Park.

But Romain Saiss, Conor Coady and Ruben Neves hand-ed Bruno Lage’s men a dramatic three points.

Southampton got their first league win of the season thanks to Armando Broja’s goal to beat Leeds 1-0.

Norwich remain winless and bottom of the table after a 0-0 draw with Brighton.

Ten-match win streak in UAE gives Pakistan edge over India, says BabarTDT | Manama

Pakistan have won their last 10 Twen-ty20 internationals in the United Arab

Emirates and captain Babar Azam claims that will give his men the edge over India in their World Cup opener.

The arch-rivals will meet in Dubai on Oc-tober 24 in what will be the biggest clash of the tournament that starts Sunday in Oman and the UAE.

Pakistan have never won a World Cup match against India, but that does not both-er Babar who believes familiarity with

the UAE pitches will help them break the jinx.

“Definitely we have played a lot of cricket in the UAE,” Babar said in a captain’s press conference when asked about his team’s dismal 0-5 record against India in T20 World Cup clashes.

Azarenka books spot in Indian Wells final against Badosa

AFP | Indian Wells

Victoria Azarenka, who is hoping to become the first

three-time WTA winner in In-dian Wells, punched her ticket to Sunday’s final by rallying to beat former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Friday.

Two-time Australian Open winner Azarenka continued her solid play in the California desert as she goes for her first title of 2021 and 22nd of her career.

The 32-year-old arrived in the semi-finals without drop-ping a set and after losing the first one to Ostapenko on Fri-day night she settled in and found her form.

Azarenka will face Spaniard Paula Badosa, who defeated Ons Jabeur in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Azarenka is seeking to win the tournament for the third time after victories in 2012 and 2016.

She is the only former cham-pion left in either the women’s or men’s field, and with anoth-er victory can separate herself from the list of women who have won the trophy twice -- which includes Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

Azarenka clinched victory on her first match point when Ostapenko slammed a fore-hand into the net.

This was the second career meeting between the two but the first on hardcourt, so it took Azarenka time to feel her opponent out and figure out

her weaknesses.“She was playing really in-

credible in the first set, not giv-ing me much,” said Azarenka.

“I was just trying to find an opportunity -- actually create an opportunity -- for me to get back into the match and take a little bit more control. I really had to fight for every ball.”

Ostapenko controlled most of the first set, breaking Aza-renka in the second game to go up 2-0. She then held serve to jump out to a 3-0 lead using her powerful ground strokes to move the Belarusian around the court.

Azarenka went down again 2-0 in the second set but then caught fire while holding serve in the third game.

That started a run of five straight games to take a 5-2 lead. Ostapenko held serve once more but Azarenka served out the set to level the match.

Azarenka raised her level another notch in a hard-fought third set, winning the final three games to get to the final where she will face Badosa for the first time.

Kohli hails impact of ‘inspirational’ mentor DhoniAFP | Dubai

Virat Kohli yesterday hailed MS Dhoni as an “inspira-

tion” who had a “huge impact” on his cricketing journey as the India captain goes in search of the Twenty20 World Cup title.

Dhoni, who on Friday led Chennai Super Kings to their fourth IPL crown, captained In-dia to the T20 world title in 2007.

But a World Cup win still awaits Kohli who will step down as the national T20 skipper after the 2021 tournament which gets underway on Sunday.

The star batsman, who took over the leadership role across all formats from Dhoni in 2017, said the former captain’s pres-ence in the dressing room as team mentor will inspire an already confident unit.

“He has always been a men-tor for all of us when we were starting our careers through till the time we played with the team and now has an oppor-tunity to continue to do that

same work again,” Kohli told reporters.

“Younger guys who are play-ing their first major tourna-ments at early stages of their careers will benefit from his practical inputs, the intricate details of where the game is

going and how we can improve.“So we are delighted to have

him back in this environment and his presence will certainly boost the morale of the team further and give us a lot more confidence than we already have as a team.”

Al Merisi crowned Amateur Open championBahrain national team golfer ends three-day competition with one-over-par final round score to finish seven shots clear of

closest challenger to clinch title

• Dubai-based golfer Viggo Sorensen finishes in second place, one shot ahead of veteran Bahraini player Nasser Yaqoob

• Winners presented their respective prizes in awarding ceremony that followed play at The Royal Golf Club

TDT | Manama

Khalifa Al Merisi was yesterday crowned champion of the third annual Bahrain Amateur Open

golf championship, which came to a close at The Royal Golf Club (RGC).

Al Merisi secured the title after com-pleting the 54-hole competition seven shots clear of his closest challenger.

The Bahrain national team golfer carded a one-over-par 73 in the final round to bring his three-day total to two-under-par 214.

His day three performance yesterday included six birdies, including one on the 18th hole, but he also had a pair of double bogeys on holes five and 14 and three other bogeys.

Al Merisi capped a memorable week-end at RGC’s Montgomerie champion-ship course as he led the tournament from the first to last day.

Finishing in second place was Du-bai-based golfer Viggo Sorensen. Af-ter a disappointing second round, the Danish-French national bounced back with the field’s best score on day three of two-under-par 70. He had just two bogeys on the day while playing four birdies.

Sorensen completed the event with a five-over-par score of 221 over 54 holes.

Veteran Bahraini golfer Nasser Yaqoob came third overall. He finished yesterday’s play with an even-par score of 70 to bring his three-day total to 222. A further three shots behind was Sultan Al Hakam who played a 75 yesterday, while finishing tied-fifth were Fahad Al Hakam and Mohammed Al Noaimi, both with 226 total scores.

Last year’s champion Ahmed Al

Zayed finished seventh with a 228 gross, while Khalifa Duaij was eighth on 229. Abdulla Al Yaqoob was ninth on 232, with Hamad Afnan and Julian Jacobs tied-10th on 236 totals.
