A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH
Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the
American Bank Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912.
Leading contributors to the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy,
who donated the sanctuary windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The
ladies of the Altar Society gave the main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members,
donated the other stained glass windows. As the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in
1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily Mass for the children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In
1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled and the sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the
present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of the Sea” parish. The altar, statues and stained glass
windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral remains
standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has grown to include families from
all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country church”
atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners represent a broad cross-section of cultures and
backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Thank you for your faithfulness, your generous support, and sharing of your gifts with Our Lady Star of the Sea Church.

ABOUT THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA COLLECTION
Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church
in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the
Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain,
and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practic-
ing the faith. Your support for the collection provides lay
leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious for-
mation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith
with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To
learn more about how your gifts make a difference, visit
www.usccb.org/latin-america.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE THIS WEEKEND.

SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING
In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is call-ing. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is lis-tening” (1 Samuel 3:10).
In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.”
God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice.

FEAST OF FAITH The Greeting
At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we ex-change all day long—our “good morn-ings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spo-ken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s presence transforms us.

HVAC NOTICE
As Father Roy announced, the current HVAC units which provide heat and cooling to the church were badly damaged by rising water from the last storm. It has now become necessary to replace the units and we have re-ceived a bid of $22,100.00 to do the work. This amount is for the equip-ment, permitting and installation which includes elevated platforms which will protect the units from rising water in the future.
We know these are challenging times but, in order to avoid dipping into the church’s savings, we would greatly appreciate any donation you could make to help with this expense. Perhaps because we didn’t have our annual fund-raiser, you might consider giving what you would usually contribute to-wards that event. Every little bit helps so, if you are able and so inclined, please contact Father Roy or put your donation in the weekly basket marked “HVAC Donation”. Father Roy and all parishioners thank you for your help!
