A brief outline of the BA Degree Course in Cultural Heritage Management The BA Degree Course in Cultural Heritage Management is a three-year Degree Course which has three curricula: Archaeological Heritage, Archivistic and Library Heritage, and Historical-Artistic Heritage. Each curriculum will allow students to develop specific professional profiles. When it first came into existence in the academic year 1993-1994, the access to the BA in Cultural Heritage Management was programmed, so that only a limited number of students were selected to enrol. However, because of the many requests on the part of students, it was later turned into an open-access BA and it is one of the Degree Courses with the largest number of enrolments in the School of Humanities to date. The general aim of the BA in Cultural Heritage Management is to lead students to develop theoretical, methodological and practical competence in the sphere of cultural heritage management. In order to help students organise their academic activity proficiently, the Degree Course Board suggests a distribution of the courses in the three academic years which is based on a propaedeutic criterion: the so- called ‘basic activities’ and ‘characterising activities’ are propaedeutic (hence preparatory) to the activities which will follow. This decision was made to ensure that the basic and characterising activities would not overlap in the general timetable of courses and that the distribution of courses to attend during the three years would be properly balanced. The didactic activities can take the form of lectures, practical classes, seminars, lab activities, and language courses. According to the specific requirements of the different subjects, some courses can also be divided into modules. The courses allow students to gain 12 ECTS (= 72 hours of lectures), 9 ECTS (= 54 hours of lectures), or 6 ECTS (= 36 hours of lectures). They can also be attended partially, but no less than 6 ECTS can be gained for each module. Once a student has gained 173 ECTS, he/she is allowed to defend his/her thesis in front of a Board of Professors teaching in the BA. This can only be done, however, if the student has passed a 2 ECTS English Language Test which can be taken during any of the three academic years of the BA. The thesis defence will allow students to gain the final 7 ECTS necessary to graduate. The final exams at the end of courses can be written and/or oral and each Lecturer/Professor will decide which type of exam to opt for. Lecturers and Professors can also decide to opt for the continuous assessment, namely to allow students to take tests during the course, which will contribute to the students’ final marks and can become a valuable tool to monitor and evaluate student learning. A brief outline of the BA Degree Course in Cultural Heritage

Management

The BA Degree Course in Cultural Heritage Management is a three-year Degree Course which has three

curricula: Archaeological Heritage, Archivistic and Library Heritage, and Historical-Artistic Heritage. Each

curriculum will allow students to develop specific professional profiles.

When it first came into existence in the academic year 1993-1994, the access to the BA in Cultural Heritage

Management was ‘programmed’, so that only a limited number of students were selected to enrol.

However, because of the many requests on the part of students, it was later turned into an open-access BA

and it is one of the Degree Courses with the largest number of enrolments in the School of Humanities to

date.

The general aim of the BA in Cultural Heritage Management is to lead students to develop theoretical,

methodological and practical competence in the sphere of cultural heritage management. Because of this,

although the majority of courses fall under the humanities category, a number of courses which are more

scientific and/or technological in nature were also included, so as to support students in building specific

professional profiles.

In order to help students organise their academic activity proficiently, the Degree Course Board suggests a

distribution of the courses in the three academic years which is based on a propaedeutic criterion: the so-

called ‘basic activities’ and ‘characterising activities’ are propaedeutic (hence preparatory) to the activities

which will follow. This decision was made to ensure that the basic and characterising activities would not

overlap in the general timetable of courses and that the distribution of courses to attend during the three

years would be properly balanced.

The didactic activities can take the form of lectures, practical classes, seminars, lab activities, and language

courses. According to the specific requirements of the different subjects, some courses can also be divided

into modules. The courses allow students to gain 12 ECTS (= 72 hours of lectures), 9 ECTS (= 54 hours of

lectures), or 6 ECTS (= 36 hours of lectures). They can also be attended partially, but no less than 6 ECTS can

be gained for each module. Once a student has gained 173 ECTS, he/she is allowed to defend his/her thesis

in front of a Board of Professors teaching in the BA. This can only be done, however, if the student has

passed a 2 ECTS English Language Test which can be taken during any of the three academic years of the

BA. The thesis defence will allow students to gain the final 7 ECTS necessary to graduate.

The final exams at the end of courses can be written and/or oral and each Lecturer/Professor will decide

which type of exam to opt for. Lecturers and Professors can also decide to opt for the continuous

assessment, namely to allow students to take tests during the course, which will contribute to the students’

final marks and can become a valuable tool to monitor and evaluate student learning.

Graduates in Cultural Heritage Management can have access to the following Master’s Degree Courses:

Archaeological, Philological, Literary and Historical Sciences; History of Art and Artistic Heritage

Management; Historical, Archivistic and Library Sciences; Methodologies for the Preservation and

Restoration of Cultural Heritage; Information and Publishing; Production and Audiovisual Translation for

the Performing Arts.

Chemical-Physical Methodologies for Cultural Heritage (6 ECTS). LECTURER/PROFESSOR: COSTA GIORGIO

He graduated at the University of Genoa in 1972 and, from the outset, has devoted his scientific interest to solid state physical chemistry. He has studied the phase stability and the phase transformation of the binary alloys of rare earths(RE) and the thermal, magnetic and transport properties of intermetallic compounds at low temperatures. In the eighties he became interested in the gas-solid reaction mechanism, related to RE Oxides Nitrides an Sulfides and of the phases that show Hydrogen adsorbtion for Hydrogen storage. In 1987 he starts to study the thermal stability of high Tc superconductors (HTSC). He contributes towards solving some problems related to HTSC : a) focusing the reaction in air among Y2O3, CuO and BaO2 that gives rise to a HTSC after only one treatment in air; b) revising the thermodynamic and structural data of the systems M2O3-BaO(BaO2)-CuO (M = Y, Ln) and the related binary systems, discovering new phases; c) studying the optimization of synthering and annealing processes; d) studying the oxygen activity, versus T, in the phases RBa2Cu3O(7-x), (R=Y, Ho, Eu); e) obtaining high density and high Jc HTSC, through the grains' alignment by partial melting technique; and ) The study of the influence of the defects, caused by x, gamma or ionic radiation, on the single crystals of the superconducting phase Y-123 f) studying the mechanical properties of these HTSC; g)

Ancient Numismatics (6 ECTS). LECTURER/PROFESSOR: PERA ROSSELLA

Rossella Pera teaches at the University of Genoa as Full Professor "Ancient Numismatics" and "Art and Iconology of Ancient Coinage" (Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia; Ph. Course in Scienze Storiche dell'Antichità, già di Storia Greca); "Greek and Roman Numismatics" at the Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia, ind. Classico and in the Master universitario di primo livello "Oriente

e occidente nell'antichità: storia, archeologia, tradizione letteraria" in the same University. She is Director of Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni archeologici. Her studies have offered insights on the propaganda in the official coinage of the Roman Empire, confronted with the literary, epigraphical and archaeological sources. On the base of the Homonoia bronze coins -bearing the names of two and sometimes three cities and the word OMONOIA- she has described the attempt to establish relations between cities of Asia Minor (but also with cities of Greece) and the various purpose of this coinage from Augustus to the time of the Antonines. Afterwards she has gathered and interpreted the numismatic evidence of evergetism in the ancient world. In fact civic coins of the Roman East, with the standard phrase anetheken, record the philanthropy of a rich benefactor who financed the cost of a special issue of currency in his town. The imitations of Roman coin types on imperial provincial coinage have also been discussed as evidence of growing Roman identity in the local ruling classes. Lately she has organised Conferences and Seminars: Genoa, 29th June 2001, Seminario di Numismatica per il Ph. Course in Scienze Storiche dell'Antichità, at DISAM; Genoa, 4th December 2004, "Dai Documenti alla storia: la Liguria e il Mediterraneo attraverso le fonti documentarie e archeologiche", in collaboration with the Chairs of Medieval Archaeology, Epigraphy and Roman Institutions, Byzantine History; Genoa, 10th-12th November 2005, Secondo Incontro di Studio del LIN: "Il significato delle immagini. Numismatica, Arte, Filologia, Storia”. She collaborates from 1990 with the Numismatic Collections of Genoa, on behalf of which she has taken care of the new Exhibition of Coinage and Medals and has collaborated with the preparation of some entries for Fontes Ligurum et Liguriae Antiquae (1976), Enciclopedia Oraziana, Der Neue Pauly.
