A Cathedral Holy Week
The Cathedral of All Saints on Capital Hill
in the City and Diocese of Albany
2012

From the Dean
My dear People and Friends of the Cathedral Family:
The God that we worship, Father-Son-Holy Spirit, is a God who invites us into
relationship in a unique manner. We are not merely onlookers, but rather we are invited to
be with Him. Various human expressions seek to capture this mystery. Often we will hear
people discuss “walking with God”. Perhaps the most mysterious description comes from
our Lord Jesus, “You are the Body of Christ”. We are in fact members of His Body. To
further ponder this mystery, our Lord Jesus on the night before he died for us, as he
celebrated that first Holy Meal, told us to remember him. The Greek word he used was
anamnesis, a word that means to remember in a participatory way; remember as if we are
all there around the Table.
As we enter Holy Week, we are all again invited, not to be mere onlookers, but rather to
participate as a member of Christ’s Holy Body. At times participating will lead to shock
and horror; at other times sorrow; and still again joy and gladness. There are peaks and
valleys in this week; parades, gardens, tombs, and more. Why would we subject ourselves
to such a week?
4 Surely he has borne our infirmities
and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed. Isaiah 53:4-5 (NRSV)
We spend this week with Him because He spent His life for us. I invite you my brothers
and sisters to come and spend Holy Week with our Lord and Savior.
The Venerable David J. Collum
Archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany
