Reflections on the IB Program:

“IB is the kind of program that allows you to discover your true self, your character, your passions, your aspirations, your strengths, your weaknesses. Yes, it is difficult. Yes, it can get overwhelming and stressful. Yes, the work can become tedious. Yes, it is challenging. But after going through this journey for the past four years, I can truly say without a doubt that it was worth it. This program encourages students to express themselves confidently, to think critically and analytically but also creatively, to reflect on themselves, and to question things. In doing so, it develops students’ intellectual, social, and emotional skills. It aims to create independent thinkers that will examine every aspect and view things from different perspective before taking a decision. All of this is made possible by the incredible teachers, supporting and guiding students along every step of the way. By the end of the program you will be replying with ‘to what extent’ and ‘under what circumstances’. I am beyond grateful for the IB program for teaching me to look at things from new perspectives, for my teachers for inspiring me, and for the 45 students that I’m proud to call my friends.”

“The IB program helped me explore and learn topics I never would have otherwise. Taking these classes, especially with the amazing people that taught them, guided me toward my true interests. What I studied motivated me to choose my major and set goals for my career. I learned not only what I wanted to do with my future, but how to do it, with the skills that I learned from my IB experience as well as the example of hardworking teachers who motivated and encouraged me. I believe that this program has pushed me to become more dedicated, more open-minded, and more curious, and I'm grateful for this unique opportunity.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

“The IB Program pushed me to better myself in ways that I did not even consider imaginable. I learned to push myself to succeed for my personal benefit rather than because of external expectations or a need to uphold an image. I have learned to challenge myself and my thinking, attempting to analyze my thought processes while understanding my own personal biases. I am eternally grateful to all departments, particularly the visual arts department, for allowing me to find my sense of self. I could never live a life without the lessons I have learned there. This program has allowed me to gain confidence while expressing myself verbally, artistically, and literarily to build a relationship between myself and others as well as myself and my work. I cannot begin to fathom how else I would have developed without this learning environment, my peers, and my teachers.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

“IB was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever put myself through. But while it was stressful and exhausting, that builds character, and without it I would not have become the person I am. My experience at Edgewood is something I would not trade for the world, and the lessons I have learned along the way are priceless. I have developed many skills which will have me well-prepared for college, especially considering my university doesn’t even offer math classes. The students and teachers are people that I cherish. There is truly no better way to bond and learn than to freak out over the same assignment with the same forty kids and the same teachers we’ve had for years. Thank you so, so much to my amazing classmates and my wonderful teachers, who dealt with and helped me even on my loudest and most emotional days.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

“This program has helped me nourish my educational and perceptive weaknesses. My aspiration for chemical engineering roots from my deep desire to help others in more vulnerable communities affected by uncontrollable circumstances (such as climate, disaster, and conflict-induced displacement) with permanent solutions; something I was made aware of through this program and its inclusion of global-mindfulness in our course material. The approach to learning in IB truly lets us become masters of our knowledge, yet sets us up with the observant tools for exploring new knowledge, diploma or no diploma. Also, big shoutout to my favorite class of all time IB Geography HL!”

Reflections on the IB Program: “I would like to thank all of the IB Teachers who have been there to support, encourage, and inspire me during these last 4 years at EHS, who have driven me to work harder, to think more creatively and abstractly, and to never stop loving learning, instilling a lifelong passion for knowledge. I have been incredibly blessed and honored to have worked alongside such an amazing group of students, this group of 45, all of whom I can genuinely call friends. The program truly instills into every student the value of using our knowledge for cultivating positive change in the world, encouraging such an appreciation of all diverse perspectives and a global mindset that I know will carry far beyond just the educational experience, transcending into all aspects of life as well. I can honestly say that this program has expanded what I ever thought was possible in me as a student, only reaffirming that all of the hard work, dedication, and commitment that was poured into the program is absolutely, without-a-doubt worth it. “

Reflections on the IB Program:

“Here we are, after four years of showing our Edgewood and IB Pride. We made it through, it has been one crazy and wild ride. As most may know, poetry is my personality trait. So, here is one last rhyme for you all, trust me it was worth the wait. Whether we have talked only once or talked quite a lot, I feel lucky for every opportunity that I got. As I was able to spend my high school years alongside all of you... great classmates, and great teachers too. Class of 2020, you mean the world to me and I can’t wait to see each one of you shine. Thank you for making Edgewood into a home that I get to call: mine. These past few years I was able to grow. Every day my best friends greeted me, with a hello. The IB program taught me how to work hard. Even though, I must say, the acronyms; will leave me scarred. From IA, TOK, EE, HOTA, and CAS comes memories that I hope will forever last. I am thankful to the IB for giving me everything I have, teaching me everything I know. But sadly, it is now our turn to go. Off to college, we all part our separate ways. But I will always look back fondly upon my high school days.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

“The IB program has pushed me past what I perceived my limits to be, simultaneously revealing my best and worst qualities. With each obstacle our class hurdled, it gave us confidence for the next, which was inevitability bigger and more daunting than the last. Granted, we tripped and stumbled, occasionally falling flat on our faces, but we had something to prove to ourselves, so we always got back up and kept working. Looking over the past two years, I realized the rigor of IB played just small part in our growth, and it was truly the teachers that has allowed us to reap the benefits that we have. The teachers here at Edgewood have been critical in helping us reach for our highest potential as students, and realize our responsibility as learners and citizens of our communities. I never could have gotten this experience anywhere else, and I will always be thankful for my four years at Edgewood, and how it has helped me in realizing my goals and aspirations.”

The rigorous program full of enriching courses and content allows for us to experience the value of education, engulfing each of us in beneficial knowledge in order to further our understanding of the world around us. Our teachers have shown their great talent in educating us with the main motive of allowing us to achieve greatness. IB continuously pushes limits farther than you can imagine, but your teachers will constantly be there to help you along the way. We have great responsibilities as learners and being in the IB program allows us to realize our abilities, and the capability to continue moving forward while facing hardships. IB has pushed me out of my comfort zone, increasing my ability to take risks and develop into a more confident and motivated person. Reflections on the IB Program:

‘The IB program was quite possibly the most difficult four years I have had to endure in my life so far. The workload could be overwhelming, it pushed me to my limits as a student and as a person, and it would not be uncommon for me to go to bed past midnight. And anyone would be missing out if they did not take the opportunity to join it. IB has taught me the importance of work ethic and standing up for myself and what I believe in. If it were not for IB, I'd probably still be the impulsive and lazy student I was in middle school. With IB's help, I know that I can overcome any challenge that is thrown at me in college or in life, whether it be an English essay I have to write or a situation where I just want to quit. IB has shown me the strength and determination I hold within myself and has been the catalyst for my growth as a person and as a student.”

“The IB Programme has been an interesting experience. I discovered my love for math, my anger with chemistry, and developed a love-hate relationship with English. I've made amazing friends and spent possibly too many nights up late doing homework. I've impressed myself with how much I've learned and impressed myself with how much I can forget right before I take a test. I'm glad it's all over, but I'm also very, very glad I did it. A bit disappointed we didn't get to take the exams though. Overall, I learned a lot, about school, life, and myself, and I truly enjoyed it. Remember, program is spelled with an extra 'me.' “

This has given me the confidence I did not have before and has helped shape me into the leader I have always aspired to be. Also, before the IB program I dreaded getting out of my comfort zone, it was my greatest fear. Reflections on the IB Program:

“IB has taught me the importance of teaching a mind on how to think, not what to think. Forcing an individual to have faith in ideas that they do not comprehend will never truly reinforce a good mindset. In the future, I hope I can maintain not only this mentality but also remember all the wonderful memories I created in this program. I will never forget the teachers and classmates who made me into who I am today.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

As I am sitting here compiling my list of accomplishments, it occurs to me that my favorite moments are not

things I can put on a bulleted list. The exhilaration of throwing a flag into the air and catching it under the

stadium lights. The pride of making a good point in class and hearing pencils hurry to write it down. The giddy

feeling of putting back books with ease because I memorized the layout of the library. The feeling of belonging

when a friend and I immediately lock eyes across the room when group assignments are announced. The

feeling of certainty when trying on my senior prom dress in the store. The feeling of surrealness when clicking

the purchase button on my cap and gown. The bursting sense of joy of receiving my college acceptance letter.

But of course, this list is forever incomplete; Because the very nature of this reflection is to substitute the

feeling of being surrounded by friends and family and the sense of closure, I'd hope to feel accepting my IB

certificate. As painful as that is to say, is must be said. But another thing that must be said is that the list of

things IB taught me will likely never stop growing. My work ethic, respect for myself, and appreciation of the

human experience will never stop being relevant. Even this pandemic, in the framework of IB thinking, is an

indicator of how the world is becoming more and more connected. And with this connectedness can come

compassion and a sense of shared responsibility for our future. Overall what IB has taught me, in a sense, is

that everything can be connected and finding those connections brings understanding where there was once

uncertainty. While this is bittersweet, not even a global crisis can put a damper on how proud I am of the class

of 2020. Thank you to everyone who made my IB experience what it has been.

Reflections on the IB Program: “The IB program allowed me to experience an incredibly diverse environment where I could explore a variety of subjects and ways of approaching learning with teachers who are truly passionate about what they do and care about their students. I feel that I was able to gain a greater breadth of knowledge than students who have not been in IB, and that it has fostered my creative process and inquisitive mind. Although I wasn't able to attend my dream school, I believe IB was a significant factor in what allowed me to be accepted into NYU, as it gave me confidence in my own ability to think critically and develop a deeper understanding of the world around me. I still can't tell if IB helped or harmed my GPA, but I know it taught me the real meaning of perseverance and becoming a life-long learner. I spent four sleepless years surrounded by the most amazing and supportive people you could ever meet and was constantly pushed to try new things that enriched my life. Going through IB was painful and I sometimes look back on myself from a year ago and wonder how I survived all the pressure, procrastination, and perennial nose bleeds, but I know that I will never regret sticking with the program.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

“IB has taught me that there are so many more things worth being beyond a student. I am grateful for the knowledge I have gained, but more importantly, I am grateful for my gained confidence I will use to find my place in the world as whoever or whatever I choose to become, wherever that may be.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

“The IB Program challenged me in a way I did not even know was possible. It pushed me to think deeper and find new answers to old questions. I will forever cherish the people I met and the memories I made. Without IB, I would not have found teachers who care so much and students who are so smart and unique. I loved going to Edgewood and I thank Mrs. Childs for the hard work she does every day to make sure her students are successful.”

Reflections on the IB Program:

“Participating in the IB Program was easily the best decision of my high school career. While I had many long nights and stressful days, I was able to grow tremendously and learn and array of skills that will follow me for the rest of my life. I am thankful for the closeness of the IB community and our willingness to make sacrifices and to help one another succeed, as well as the dedication and compassion of my amazing teachers. IB taught me success, but it also taught me failure and how to overcome the obstacles in front of me and turn my weaknesses into strengths while providing me with the confidence and skills to do so. I am grateful for my time here and the amazing opportunity to be a part of the IB Program at Edgewood High School.”
