Two days before Jamie passed away, he walked with his mom, Janine, around the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. They had been there before together with Jamie’s sister, Mary, volunteering after Hurricane Katrina. This last time, Jamie walked with Janine to places she hadn’t seen and he introduced her to a family that lived across the street from him. He was helping the children of that family with their studies, and teaching them music. He hoped to help their community by starting a soup kitchen. Janine and her husband Mike are dedicated to continuing Jamie’s work by supporting the educational needs of the family and the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music. Located in the Ninth Ward as the centerpiece of the Musicians’ Village, the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music provides a safe and positive environment for underserved children and youth to develop musically, academically, and socially. It also provides underserved adult musicians access to performance and recording space, and continuing education opportunities. The Center serves as a community center and gathering place that provides information, education, and cultural inspiration to Ninth Ward residents and the larger New Orleans community. The Center was the vision of Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis, who sought to preserve the music and cultural traditions of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
