Dear Avila Supporter,

Your investment during the 2015-16 year ensured nearly 500 students graduated and achieved their dream of a college education. Because of your support, more than 2,000 Avila students received a high-quality, values-based education that pre-pares them to make a lifelong difference in our world. Thank you for all that you do to provide opportunities that transform the minds and hearts of Avila students.

Your support fueled additional accomplishments last year, including the third largest freshman class in our history and increased undergraduate student retention. A new strategic plan focused on student success was launched and a new campus master plan kicked off with a plan to expand Goppert Theatre into the Goppert Performing Arts Center. Support from alumni and donors also provided a statue of our name-sake, St. Teresa of Avila, Mabee Fieldhouse renovations, a new Student Support Services program and the Buchanan Initiative for peace and nonviolence. You can read more about these accomplishments in this annual report.

This year was especially important as we began our centennial celebration and reflected on our past, present and future. One hundred years ago, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet founded Avila University. Thank goodness this remarkable group of women were called to educate women in Kansas City! The Avila community now hails more than 14,000 alumni across the country and around the world. Today, with your help, we continue to live the charism of our founders, deliver excellence in teaching and learning, serve the dear neighbor without distinction, and prepare students to become the best version of themselves.

It is only through the generosity and leadership of alumni and donors like you that our mission is possible. Thank you for the impact you have made on Avila University and our graduates.

With sincere gratitude,

Kenneth V. Hager Ronald A. Slepitza, Ph.D., CSJAChair, Board of Trustees President2015-17

GABRIELA GARCIA is a senior nursing student, and a member of the Society of Latinos (SOL) and the Fr. Medaille Honor Society. She also volunteers with Campus Ministry. Gabby is a recipient of the Dorothy Whitfield Endowed Scholarship.

“The scholarships I receive give me the support and motivation to continue my college education without focusing on the financial strain. My family and I are very grateful for all the tremendous opportunities Avila has provided over the years. My hope is to give back and ensure future Avila students have the same opportunities as myself. Attending Avila has changed my life completely. Thank you to the donors for all your support!”

JOSH BENFORD is a first year pre-med student. He is a dual-athlete participating on both the men’s basketball team and cross country team. Josh is a recipient

of the Bill Waris Memorial Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship was established in memory of longtime head men’s basketball coach,

Bill Waris, by the Waris family and Tom McCullough.

“I want to thank the scholarship donors for blessing my family and me with this scholarship. Words cannot explain or express how much this means to me. Your graciousness will help me pursue

my degree in medicine and pursue my goal of being an anesthesiologist. Thank you so much for making

a difference in my education!”

Josh Benford, freshman Pre-medicine major
