Effective use of the Voice � Speak clearly and move your eyes about the group as
you speak. Ask “Can everyone hear me?” or “Can you hear me at the Back?”
� Use a voice that is only slightly louder than normal. Some leaders can settle players down by speaking softly.
� Stopping in the middle of a word and waiting is another technique for gaining players attention.
� Use changes in your tone of voice to communicate varying moods.
� Don’t talk longer than 2 or 3 minutes when making an explanation. Demonstrate first, then explain.
� Use language that is easy to understand.Communication Principles
Listening Techniques It takes practice to learn to be a good listener. Here are some listening techniques to use to improve your listening skills.
1. Attentive Listening: Being quite & obviously interested, eye to eye contact
2. Paraphrasing: Repeat using your own words what you think the player said
3. Bridging: Use words like “I see”, “Uh,uh” , “Yes” to indicate that you following & understanding.
4. Restating: The leader repeats the last words that the player said
5. Invite Clarification: The coach asks the player to clarify or expand upon something they said
After practice is a good time to listen to your players, either casually or by asking specific questions i.e. “What have you learned today?”
