The first spirit symbolism

• A figure dressed to look like the little girl’s doll.• The first spirit symbolizes Scrooge’s mistakes,

and his lost opportunities. • “I am your mistakes, Ebenezer Scrooge, all of

the things you could have done and did not” L.178 – 180

• Contrasting his past spirit as Scrooge the child and the young man sheds light on the chains that Marley talked about earlier.

The first Spirit symbolism

• It explains how he has transformed from being people-oriented and a joy lover to this old, self-centered, lonely guy.

• It symbolizes how his greed and selfishness had chained his soul.

Scrooge’s Childhood Effect.• Scrooge saw his old childhood

friends at boarding school who were going home for Christmas.

• This shows the emotional effect of being left as a child on Scrooge.

Baba, Robinson Crusoe.• This shows he liked adventure, fantasy, and

had an imagination. • He liked to read to escape his reality.• In contrast to his younger self, he tries to

hide his emotions in the present by being brusque.

Fan.• He remembers how what it felt

to have a family.• Fan was sick, and died later as a

young woman.• She had a child named Fred.

Scrooge as a young man• After Scrooge saw how his past

employer Master Fezziwig treated young Scrooge as an employee, he realizes, in shock, what he has become.

• He remembers what a good master Fezziwig was.

Scrooge as a young man.• Master Fezziwig used to

make his employees happy not with money, but with caring, throwing parties, and making his workers feel joy.

• He starts to have an internal struggle to change.

Technical elements

• Singing:Remember the little girl with her song in the prologue!• She ends up scene 3 with another song,

why?• Gaines wanted to ease the pace of actions

after the first spirit left and to pave the way for the next spirit to come.

Lights• When the spirit signaled for

the lights to fade on child Fan & Scrooge.

• This shows that their role as educators to scrooge is over.
