Advanced Residential Design Studio

CPS Associates has hired Codelva Designs to

develop a model condominium apartment for the

second floor of the historical Husler’s Building. The plan

is to use the apartment to encourage its leasing and for

the development of apartments on the remaining two

floors.

The apartments will be directed toward young

professional adults between the ages of 25 and 40 who

are starting careers. Their average salaries would be

at about $80,000. The design will reflect the post-war

modern of the late 1940’s to the contemporary look of

the early 1960’s. Flexibility of the 2100 sq ft unusual

shape of the space will be utilized.

In the space there will need to be an entry coat

closet, living area, dining area, kitchen, laundry area,

guest bathroom, guest bedroom with closet/office,

Master suite with a walk-in closet and bathroom. Spaces

need to be multi-functional and all spaces need to reflect

universal design.

The owners of the Thalia Theatre wanted something that was non- tradi-tional to match the types of shows they do. For my approach I went with a mod-ern victorian theme veering away from the traditional reds and golds. Here’s my approach: All of these things will give the theatre a nice, classy, yet non-tradition look to it. Taking it from an artistic approach, but not making it too much to handle at the same time. I want the theatre to be hip enough for the younger crowd to go to it as well as the older community

• Bringing the glitz and glam through light fixtures and movie poster

• Eccentric, beautiful rought iron work on the main doors and touches of it

Environmental Design Community Branch Out is a volunteer center that works on projects within the community, and focuses on the “Green” elements. The mission statement of CBO is “Saving the community one tree, one park, one house at a time.” The goal is to help make the environment and community a better place to live in, and to have people want to be in it. Some of the larger sustainable qualities will be in the furniture selec-tions and the lighting.

Thesis DevelopmentRenewable energy sources in a residential setting can help to save money for

the homeowner, reduce harm to the environment, and help the community

Thesis Statement

Concept Objectives Project Objectives Solar, wind and hydro energies help to save money for the homeowner by making their own en-ergy instead of having to buy energy. Renewable energies use nature and do not harm nature. Bought energy is made in ways that doesn’t use natures infinite resources, but uses things like coal to make their energy which harms the environ-ment One home can generate enough energy to help run homes around it The long time use of renewable energy concepts make it a viable choice for use in today’s design.

Show how renewable energies can run the entire home through the use of:• Solar water heaters and solar pool heaters• Home wind turbines• Solar panels• Water wheels or turbines (if connected to water)• Green/Renewable products• Solar lighting

Taking the architecture of the home and using what exists to help save costs of energy• Window placement• Eaves and awnings• Roof placements and styles

Show savings in the initial cost of the energy sources, by comparing energy costs versus renewable energies.

Renewable Energies

• Solar power started as early as Ancient Egyptian times with magnifying glasses to make fire

• Solar power was used to heat water• Science was then brought in by using

electrolytic cells to capture the sun• Photovoltaic (PV) Cells came next, as

science evolved• The first home to be run solely off of

solar power was in 1983

• Like solar power, wind energy was used in Ancient Egypt, but used to crush grains

• The wind mill was created to hid the parts that crushed the grains, and to steady the turbines

• Industrialization lessened wind use, but World War II came around and revitalized it

• It’s used commonly today, more so in Europe than the US

• Hydro power started in Ancient Greece, used to make flower

• Water wheels were used to run a mill, much like in a wind mill

• The mills are called Gris Mills• Water turbines have been used since the

early 1800’s, mostly used in dams• The Hoover Dam alone provides enough

electric to supply to Nevada, Arizona, and parts of California, 1.3 mil homes
