Today we're beginning an ongoing series that will highlight key quotes from The "Miscellanies" of Jonathan Edwards. (Thank you to The Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University for hosting all of them online for free!)This week's quote is from Miscellanies #3:

Happiness is the end of the creation ... because the end of the creation is that the creation might glorify [the Creator]. Now what is glorifying God, but a rejoicing at that glory he has displayed? An understanding of the perfections of God, merely, cannot be the end of the creation; for he had as good not understand it, as see it and not be at all moved with joy at the sight. Neither can the highest end of the creation be the declaring God's glory to others; for the declaring God's glory is good for nothing otherwise than to raise joy in ourselves and others at what is declared.

In other words, it would be meaningless for God to create the universe if the highest purpose of the creation was merely to understand or to declare his perfections. Rather, it is when the creation is made happy in understanding and declaring his perfections that God gets the most glory.Check out John Piper's seminar "Desiring God" (or read the book) to see the biblical foundations for this truth.

A Alegria é o fim da criação... porque o objetivo da criação é que a criação possa glorificar [ao Criador].Ora, o que está glorificando a Deus senão um regozijo na glória que ele próprio revelou? Um mero entendimento das perfeições de Deus não pode ser o fim da criação; pois para ele, tanto não entender, quanto ver e não ser sequer um pouco movido de alegria com a visão, significam a mesma coisa. O maior fim da criação nem mesmo pode ser declarar a glória de Deus para outros; pois declarar a glória de Deus não é bom para nada se não para elevar o gozo em nós mesmos e nos outros para os quais é declarada.Em outras palavras, não haveria sentido para Deus criar o universo se o maior propósito da criação fosse meramente entender ou declarar suas perfeições.
