Preface
Wherever Christians gather together to worship and praise God, we sing songs—songs that express ourguilt due to sin, our contrition and confession, and our faith, hope and joy of God’s grace and salvation.Throughout history Christians have joined together in singing hymns of praise to a loving God. Lutheransin particular are blessed with a great heritage of Christian music. The Lutheran hymnals commonly used inour American churches today are truly a blessing from our Lord.
The goal of A Collection of Lutheran Music is to help Christians praise God with music and song. ThisCollection of music provides simplified chordbooks, midi files, concordances and audio CDs as supplementsto the common Lutheran hymnals and is aimed at increasing the number of people who can enjoy studying, listening to and playing this cherished music themselves.
Hymnal Concordance
A concordance is an alphabetical index of all the words in a text or corpus of texts, showing every contextualoccurrence of a word. This concordance indexes the hymn stanzas found in the Lutheran hymnal EvangelicalLutheran Hymnary published in 1996 by Morning Star Music Publishers.
The Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary Concordance is available in two versions. This book is the AbridgedConcordance. It includes entries for the significant words in the hymnal (excluding common prepositions, pronouns, verbs, and articles). The CD that accompanies the book contains the browser-based UnabridgedConcordance that indexes all the words that appear in the hymnal and is very convenient for computer use.
The statistics below compare the contents of the Unabridged and Abridged versions:
• Unabridged Concordance: 5,803 words, 109,268 phrases indexed
• Abridged Concordance: 5,396 words, 49,591 phrases indexed
Each phase entry in the concordance is preceeded by a reference. For example, the entry
510.1.3 The Sabbath has no end.
under the word SABBATH has the reference “510.1.3” which means the phrase “Holy keep the Sabbathday,” is found in Hymn 510, Stanza 1, Phrase 3. The abbreviations Ti, Re, or Al shown in some referencesindicate the word is found in the hymn Title, Refrain, or Alleluia Refrain, respectively.
Media Formats
The Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary concordance is available in several media formats. The Abridged Con-cordance is available as both a printed book and as an Abobe PDF file (Portable Document Format) that canbe downloaded from the Lutheran Music web site. The Unabridged Concordance is available on a computerCD accompanying the printed book, or as a ZIP file downloaded from the web site.

“Music is an outstanding gift of God and next to theology...I would not give up my slight knowledgeof music for a great consideration...and youth should be taught this art...for it makes fine skillfulpeople...I would certainly like to praise music with all my heart as the excellent gift of God whichit is and to commend it to everyone.” Martin Luther
