Saint George Church - Worcester & Holden
July 24, 2016: 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Parish Mission StatementParish Mission StatementParish Mission StatementParish Mission Statement
We, the parish community of St George, celebrate the welcoming presence of Christ in our lives. Together with the universal Church, we are nourished and sustained through the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, and we are inspired by the proclamation of the Word, guided by the Holy Spirit. We continually seek to grow in a deeper understanding of our faith, to respect the sanctity of human life, and respond to what Jesus asks of us in our time by sharing our gifts and partici-pating in parish activities and outreach to others.

Consider hosting a gathering of “neighbors” in your home
Our pastor Fr. Niccolls would like to get to know the friends and neighbors of our parish. Since his arrival here two years ago, father has vis-ited the homes of many of our parishioners. The gath-erings help to give father the opportunity to meet, greet, and share the news of what’s happening here at the parish. The host or hostess usually invites a few “neighbors” for a gathering which typically lasts about an hour. The “neighbors” might be a group of folks on your street or simply a group of friends, acquaintances, co-workers or parishioners. (We are happy to help you with ideas, addresses, or invitations). Simple refresh-ments might be served. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. Please contact Fr. Niccolls at the Parish Office or af-ter Mass if you are interested in setting up a date and time for a visit.
For more information or assistance in planning please contact Annie Doyle Ex.11.
Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions for July
During the month of July, Pope Francis has asked that indigenous peoples, whose identity and very ex-istence are threatened, will be shown due respect. The Holy Father has also asked that the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean, by means of her mission to the continent may announce the Gospel with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.
Parish Organist Saint George's Parish is seeking to fill the position of Parish Organist to accompany our well-established, vibrant music ministry. Prospective candidates should be accomplished musicians and liturgists who are able to accompany a choir and/or a congregation mu-sically and vocally at Masses. Weekend/Christmas/Easter Triduum/Holy Days of Obligation availability and flexibility is a must. Please email your resume to the parish Music Direc-tor, Bill White: [email protected] .
Recently, we held our first Vacation Bible Camp which has taken place here in this parish in quite a few years. We had sixteen of our young parishioners who took part in it and enjoyed it very much. I am very grateful to Aaron & Karen Fuller and all the adult and youth volunteers who helped them to make this Vacation Bible Camp such a great learning and fun experience for our young parishioners and their fami-lies. We have already reserved the dates of July 10 - 14, 2017 for next year's Vacation Bible Camp so that even more of our families can take advantage of this program and mark it in their calendars now.
Talk on Pope Francis The Joy of Love by Dr. Klofft At Immaculate Conception
Dr. Christopher Klofft, Professor at Assumption Col-lege and parishioner of Immaculate Conception Par-ish, will be giving a talk on the recent Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis call Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). The talk will take place at Immaculate Conception Parish, located at 353 Grove Street in Worcester, in the Church Basement on Mon-day, July 25 at 6:30 PM. All are invited to attend as Dr. Klofft discusses and opens up this beautiful docu-ment written by Pope Francis on the topic of the fam-ily. Feel free to also invite others outside the parish for this one-time presentation. The cost is free. Refreshments and snacks will be served.
Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola
Dear Lord, Teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; To give and not to count the cost; To fight and not to heed the wounds; To Labor and not to ask for reward, Saving that I am doing your will.

Grades 1-5 Sarah Kelly- Coordinator
I want to thank all of the students, & families for a wonderful year. I also want to thank our teachers for their dedication. We look forward to another great year starting in September.
No Vacation
The carefree days of summer may be here for some, but for too many children and their families in our community there are no vacation plans, only the hope of not becoming homeless. We can all help make this hope a reality by using Hope for Housing "Caring Cards" when we shop this summer and we can use them at no added cost to us. Please make a decision to come prepared to purchase Caring Cards for checks or cash this summer and by doing so help assure that as many children as possible will be able to return to the schools, teachers and classmates they have come to know when fall returns. As Pope Francis reminds us ... "we must do good to those who cannot repay us." May we all be blessed with a safe summer.

Registration forms are still available for the 2016-2017 school year in the church hall and on parish web-site. Junior High classes meet two Sundays a month from 6:00-7:30pm.
The class schedule and updated attendance policy can be found on the registration form.
∗ Please note that the cost of registration in-creases after August 1st, so please make sure to submit registrations and payment by August 1st.
∗ We are still looking for new and returning teachers to help with classes, so please con-tact Kevin Browne if you are interested.
∗ Or if you are interested in helping, but can’t commit to leading a class, we are also look-ing for help with activities, snacks, etc.
Looking forward to a great year!
Technology Committee News
We have inventoried the parish technology and found and updated many items that have already been put to good use. We have also
completed research and have begun the task of cre-ating a new parish webpage. At this time, we would like you to consider what you find most valuable in a webpage. Beginning next Sunday, July 31, an in-pew survey will be available for your input. Think about what you might enjoy and benefit from on our new site so that it serves all parishioners' needs. We are indebted to Ruth Viens for her tireless efforts in shep-herding our parish website for nearly 20 years. Website questions and comments may be sent to [email protected].
SAT Prep Course
James Kelly (Leominster H.S. Math Teacher & St. George Parishioner) and Michael Hughes (St. John’s H.S. Theology Teacher) will be running an SAT Prep Course for high school students at St. George’s. We can arrange to visit and bring Eucharist. Remember that due to HIPAA regulations, unless you allow the hospi-tal or health care institution to release information and list St. George’s as your religious affiliation, we are not told that you are a patient. We call the area hos-pitals each week to see if any of our parishioners are hospitalized. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
This Weekend’s Stewardship Thought This Weekend’s Stewardship Thought This Weekend’s Stewardship Thought This Weekend’s Stewardship Thought
Jesus is describing God’s immeasurable generosity when He says in today’s Gospel, “Whoever asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is admitted.” But it should be the description of us as Christian stewards-those seeking to follow Christ by using our gifts in service to others.
Year of Mercy Local Pilgrimage On Friday, August 19 , Bishop McManus will lead a pilgrimage to the Divine Mercy Shrine in Stockbridge, MA. The diocesan bus will leave Immaculate Concep-tion Church, 353 Grove St., Worcester at 8:15 am and will return at approximately 6:30 pm. The Bishop will say Mass in the Shrine church at 11:00 am. We will say the chaplet of Divine Mercy and confessions will be available. Pilgrims are welcome to provide their own transportation and meet us there. Parishes are also welcome to sponsor their own busses and join us at the Shrine. Pilgrims should bring their own picnic lunches as there are no cafeterias onsite. Seats on the diocesan busses are $10. If you would like to make a reservation please visit worcesterdiocese.org/year-of-mercy for a reservation form or contact Julie Schroeder at [email protected] or call 508-929-4345.
Baptism Preparation
Welcome! The next Baptism Prepara-tion sessions will be held later this sum-mer. Please contact Annie Doyle at 508-853-0183 or [email protected] for application forms or additional infor-mation. All are welcome! No matter what the age of a child, we are happy to welcome everyone to this sacra-ment of initiation into our Catholic faith. Pope Francis says: “Every child who is born is a gift of joy and of hope, and every child who is baptized is a miracle of the faith and a feast for the family of God.”
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Kids naturally want to do things for themselves and so will often ask mom or dad to “show me how” to do things, from tying their shoes to driving a car. We teach kids how to play games, how to read, how to ride a bike and how to clean their room. But the best teaching does not come by way of explanation, but by example. Kids mimic what they see and hear their parents do. And they learn those lessons so well. Ever hear a three-year-old use some interesting lan-guage? Some lessons are taught, and others are caught! There are many ways that we teach. We mentor, in-struct, direct, demonstrate, explain and assist. But when it comes to faith, the most important of all is witness. The best lessons we teach are the ones that we practice as we preach! Good example is the most powerful tool. If I want my children to be truthful, I cannot lie, even little ‘white lies.’ If I want them to be honest, I cannot cheat. If I want them to be holy, I must have my own relationship with the Lord and be genuine in my beliefs. I have to pray, receive the sac-raments and participate in my parish. We teach kids to do so many things so well; let’s include our faith. Make your life the best answer to the unspoken re-quest: Show me! ~James Gaffney, © 2010 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing [email protected]

Please continue to pray for our parish outreach ef-forts and all those we serve. There is so much suf-fering that only prayer can heal. Your prayers are helping miracles to happen every day! Please con-tinue to pray many little prayers as often as possi-ble.
MUSTARD SEED MEALS
Many thanks to all who assisted with an extra Mus-tard Seed Meal last Wednesday. We will be doing three meals this month.
When colleges close for the summer there are less groups to provide meals so we are lending a hand. We have been very blessed by a generous donor who assisted us.
Our Confirmation Candidates donated cole slaw and helped to serve the meal. Each candidate is also asking guests and fellow volunteers for “advice” on life. We are all learning a lot from this experience!
Our next meal is Tuesday July 26 (was previously posted incorrectly). Needs are posted at each church exit. Thank you in advance for your continu-ing generosity.
PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION
As some of you know, Michael Welch, recently re-tired headmaster of St. John’s High School will be leaving soon to serve the Oglala Lakota people of South Dakota. He and his wife have asked for our assistance to mail a shipment of much needed school books. The books have been shipped. The cost is $823.00.
So we come to you, once again , and ask you to consider doing what you can to help in this worth-while effort.
Checks can be made out to St. George Parish with a notation that this is for the “Indian Reservation”. Donations can be placed in the collection basket, mailed to the Parish Office or given to a member of the parish staff after Mass. Many Thanks!
THE FAMILY CONNECTION
For Those Alienated from Family...Lord, bless those who experience rejection or misunderstanding in their family settings. Protect and guide young people who seek the love and respect of family through gang membership. Console the elderly or infirm who are unable to make overtures toward family or community for themselves. Enlighten those who are alienated from family, those for whom the words “I’m sorry” or “I forgive you” might rebuild a bridge to relationship. Comfort the forgotten, the neglected, the abused, and those who have run away or feel they must hide from family. Embrace all persons, wherever they are, who yearn for the warmth of a hug, an affirming smile, a forgiving word, or simply a place to belong.

Mercy Message
“We have received freely and so we must give freely. We are called to serve Christ the Crucified through every marginalized person. We touch the flesh of Christ in he who is outcast, hungry, thirsty, naked, imprisoned, ill, unemployed, persecuted, in search of refuge. That is where we find our God, that is where we touch the Lord. Jesus himself told us, explaining the protocol for which we will all be judged: “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). (Pope Francis- The Name of God is Mercy)
REFLECTION: How do I feel when I see a person who is poorly dressed, showing the effects of alcohol or drugs, is homeless and hungry? Am I judgmental? Do I walk past the person thinking or saying: “it’s not my problem”. Christ Himself invites each of us to show care and compassion for those we meet each day. Let us treat others in the same way we want to be treated. Let us be open to see the face of Christ in each of our brothers and sisters.
