Solar Returns

Solar Return charts are calculated for the exact moment when the Sun returns to its natal position (within 2 days of one's birthday). These charts can be read much like natal charts, except that it must be kept in mind that they are in effect only for the course of a year (approximately from birthday to birthday).

A Solar Return chart can be read in as much detail as desired. Some key points to consider are as follows:

1. The Ascendant of the Solar Return chart will color the individual's approach to his or her environment for the year. For example, if Aries is on the Ascendant in the Solar Return chart, the individual may approach the year with increased energy and enterprise, and perhaps with some impatience. The ruler of the Ascending sign, and its position by sign, house, and aspect, will hold more information as to the individual's general temperament and focus.

2. Note which planets and points in the natal chart, if any, are effectively brought to an angle of the Solar Return chart. Let's say, for example, that the Solar Return Ascendant is 22 degrees Virgo, and the natal position of Venus is 24 degrees Virgo. The natal Venus is therefore conjunct the Solar Return Ascendant, and one can presume that the condition and issues surrounding the individual's natal Venus will be highlighted (effectively coming to the fore) in the Solar Return year. This consideration shows us what natal conditions, or inherent personality issues, are highlighted in the year of the Solar Return. If, for example, you have a natal Sun square Mars, and the sun is on the Solar Return Ascendant, perhaps with Mars on the Midheaven as well, we can safely presume that the Sun-Mars struggle or challenge will be especially highlighted in both a personal (Ascendant) and public (Midheaven) manner.

3. Similarly, note which Solar Return planets are on or aspecting Solar Return angles. These are transits that are emphasized in the year of the Solar Return.

4. What is the condition of the Sun? Where is it located by house? (We know the sign, of course, because it will be at the exact natal position). This can show an area of focus for the upcoming year. What kind of aspects does it make?

5. Where is the Moon? The position of the Moon by house and sign will show where your heart is, so to speak. If, for example, the Solar Return Moon is in Libra in the 5th house, you will likely to be emotionally tied up in, and concentrated on, love and relationship. A strong need for personal self-expression will be characteristic of the year, and emotional ups and downs are likely to occur in this area of life, simply because this is where your heart is—this is the area of life that you have the biggest emotional investment in—and you may not be completely rational and "in control" in this area. More than simple fluctuations will be in store in this area of life if, for example, the Moon is also forming a square to Pluto in the Solar Return chart. Profound changes are likely to occur here. Thus, factoring in the Moon's aspects will help refine the reading.

6. Note that a Solar Return chart can be read much like a natal chart, with the idea that it is transient rather than permanent. If you are interested in looking at a specific area, such as finances, you can study the Return's second house, eighth house, and the condition of Venus. For example, if Solar Return Venus is opposite Solar Return Neptune, especially if Venus also rules the second house in the Solar Return, you might presume that either this coming year there is less emphasis on materialism, or that your income might be fluctuating and somewhat unstable.

7. A consideration that I have found to be particularly significant is critical degrees. The most significant critical degrees in Solar Return interpretation are 29 degrees and 0 degrees of any sign. When found in the SR chart, there can be significant events surrounding the energy of the planet/point itself, and/or the house it rules in the chart. I do look at the classic critical degrees as well, but as a secondary consideration. 8. Combining Transits and Progressions in Predictive Astrology

In predictive work, we look for more than one activation in order to see a predictive theme in the native's life. One factor alone, such as progressed Venus square natal Mercury, is generally not enough to predict a significant event occurring in the native's life. We look for confirmation elsewhere.

An illuminating technique involves creating a tri-wheel with the natal chart in the center, secondary progressions in the second wheel, and transits in the outer (third) wheel. This way we can easily see transits to both the natal chart and the progressed chart, progressed planets in relationship to the natal chart, and progressed planets in relation to other progressed planets. This will help us to see the big picture, in terms of general themes. If we study transits to the natal chart alone, we will find that significant events are not always confirmed. If we add transits to progressed planets and points to our study, we open up much more detail. Studying progressed planets and points and their relationship to the natal chart (and to each other), our study becomes even more fine-tuned.

We are currently developing this area of the site, where we plan to share our knowledge in the field of Predictive Astrology. Another area of focus this year can be found by determining which natal house is effectively brought to the Ascendant. For example, if the Solar Return Ascendant is 14 degrees Cancer, and this degree is found in the natal fifth house, the natal fifth house is effectively "brought" to the Ascendant, and will be another area of focus. 6. Where is the Moon? The position of the Moon by house and sign will show where your heart is, so to speak. If, for example, the Solar Return Moon is in Libra in the 5th house, you will likely to be emotionally tied up in, and concentrated on, love and relationship. 8. Get an overall feel for the Solar Return chart by examining hemispheric emphasis, whether or not it is scattered, and which houses (angular, succedent, and cadent) are emphasized. Also, note the qualities of the dominant signs of the year (cardinal, fixed, or mutable).

9. You know the upcoming year will be a "big" one (in a transitional sense) when the Solar Return Sun forms a hard angle with the Solar Return Moon. This is also true when the Sun is conjunct a Solar Return angle.

10. A consideration that I have found to be particularly significant is critical degrees . The most significant critical degrees in Solar Return interpretation are 29 degrees and 0 degrees of any sign. 11. For an insightful and rather thorough analysis of the Solar Return chart, look to Planets in Solar Returns: Yearly Cycles of Transformation & Growth by Mary Fortier Shea. Example #1:Let's look at an example. The following is the natal chart of Ann: The Solar Return chart for the year we are studying is presented below, along with Ann's natal chart in the outer wheel so that we can easily see which natal planets conjunct the Solar Return angles. Immediately, I honed in on a few standout features involving the angles:1. Solar Return Jupiter is conjunct the Ascendant (rising) in the Solar Return chart, and it opposes a conjunction of Mars and Neptune on the Descendant. Mercury squares this opposition, forming a T-square. All planets involved are in the foreground (angular), in prominent positions in the Return chart.

2. The natal Moon conjuncts the Solar Return Midheaven.

3. Solar Return Mercury is conjunct the natal Midheaven.

We also note that there is a conjunction of the Moon and Pluto in the Return chart, and that it trines SR Jupiter, and sextiles SR Mars and Pluto.

Many different issues came to the fore in the year in question. Most notably, her good friend with whom she maintained a friendship with for a few years, committed suicide and a murder on the same day. This, of course, came as a complete shock, and the violent act rocked Ann's world. She had no clue that this man who seemed to be quite "together" could have committed such acts.

Ann, of course, struggled with this tragedy for some time after it happened. She struggled with guilt (did she ignore signs he may have been displaying?), loss (of a friendship), shock, and anger.

If we had looked at the Solar Return chart before the events happened, we would not have been able to predict what actually happened. However, we may have easily seen that Ann would confront some powerful emotional issues, perhaps in a public manner (natal Moon conjunct the SR Midheaven), and that she would struggle with illusion/guilt/anger/excess with regards to her personal relationships (Mars conjunct Neptune at the Descendant). Mercury rules her natal 11th house of friendships, and it also rules her Solar Return 11th house. Mercury (both natal and Solar Return) is found in the 10th house conjunct her natal Midheaven, effectively bringing 11th house issues into the fore in a public manner.

The SR Moon conjunction to Pluto suggests an emotional crisis of sorts. James A. Eshelman, in his book Interpreting Solar Returns, describes this aspect as "Sharp, intensive alterations in life situations; dramatic transformations...Experiences elicit a profound, climactic emotional response (crisis, shock)...Encountering the unlikely, improbable, unbelievable." (1)

Of course, we cannot expect something as dramatic as what happened in Ann's life to occur as a result of the individual factors found in the Solar Return chart and noted here. For example, Neptune conjunct the Descendant in a Solar Return chart, taken alone, can very certainly represent the encountering of disillusionments in close relationships. It can also suggest a year in which the native looks for new meanings in relationships, for example.

It is interesting to find Jupiter prominent in Solar Returns and transits when, for example,

a person has had an accident, or goes through something like Ann did. At first, it seems counter-intuitive because we consider Jupiter the planet of luck. Indeed, it does have a protective influence. Perhaps prominent Jupiter suggests a level of protection in the sense that the person survived the incident or crisis. Another way of looking at it is that Jupiter is the planet of expansion and excess. Effectively, it does represent some level of drama. Involved with Neptune and Mars, and we can easily see that it expanded or emphasized the Mars/Neptune issues of disillusionment. When in difficult aspect especially, Jupiter can suggest over-confidence and recklessness or misjudgment as a result.

More Considerations/Interpretation TechniquesIf you study Solar Returns and find them as intriguing as I do, you will likely want to fine-tune your analyses. On the first page of this Solar Return feature, I listed some of what I feel are the key considerations for interpreting Solar Return charts. In addition to these considerations, there are many different factors to consider that will help you with "fine-tuning".

Consider the aspects that SR planets are making. Let's say SR Venus is conjunct the SR Ascendant. One might jump to the conclusion that the native may find romance, or that it will be an especially social or romantic, in the year ahead. If SR Saturn is squaring that Venus, and Saturn is, for example, on the IC, this may in fact be a reclusive year—one in which the native's lack of social life or romantic life may be an issue or a preoccupation.

I find the Vertex and the Nodes of the Moon prominent when important contacts are made. I have frequently seen, for example, SR Venus in tight conjunction to SR Node in the Solar Return chart before meeting a "significant other", as well as SR Venus tightly square the Nodal axis, and SR Vertex tightly conjunct the natal Vertex.

If you want to look more closely at a particular area of life, such as finances, study the Solar Return 2nd house. Look at the ruling planet of the sign on the second house and where it is posited, as well as the aspects it makes. If health and habits are areas of concern, study the sixth house in a similar manner, and so forth.

Finding the natal ascendant sign on the Solar Return ascendant is significant. That year may be one in which we find ourselves relying on ourselves, focusing on our needs, and expressing ourselves as individuals. When the reverse is true, that is, when the natal

descendant sign is on the Solar Return ascendant, we might feel we are dependent on others during that period.

Qualities of the Houses and Signs:

When many planets (approximately 5 or more) are found in angular positions, and to some extent when there are an unusual number of planets in cardinal signs, the year can be a very busy one—perhaps too busy to the point that the native feels there just isn't enough time to plan ahead or think things through. Poor decision-making may be a consequence.

A preponderance of planets and angles in mutable signs and/or planets in cadent houses suggests a period of time when the native needs to adapt to many little and frequent changes. The changes may not be quite as dramatic as the ones associated with cardinal/angular Solar Returns, but they can take their toll if the native is, for example, a largely fixed personality. The native may be in a preparation phase. This is generally a good year for tending to details. Instead of being reactive, which is more likely when there is a preponderance of cardinal/angular planets, the native is proactive. The down side of this condition is a feeling that one is busy but not knowing where things are heading.

A preponderance of planets in fixed signs and/or succedent houses can be indicative of a year when things don't change very much, and/or when the native is in a building phase. It may be a particularly stable year. Impulsiveness is far less likely with this condition than if there is a preponderance of cardinal/angular planets in the Solar Return.

Of course, considering the overall feel of the SR chart in this way is best when you compare it with the natal chart. A Solar Return chart that is predominantly cardinal and angular is likely to be more dramatic for a fixed

personality than it would be for a cardinal/angular personality, who would feel quite comfortable with the energy of the year.

With a strong emphasis on angular houses (houses 1, 4, 7, and 10), the year can be a time of new beginnings, much action, and a lot of attention. The first 4 months of the year ahead may be most active.

With a strong emphasis on succedent houses (houses 2, 5, 8, and 11), this is a year of developing, building, and overall stability. Some resistance to change is likely, and inertia may dominate. Months 5 to 8 (that is, five to eight months after your birthday) may be most active.

With a strong emphasis on cadent houses (houses 3, 6, 9, and 12), there is a tendency to scatter energies, feel somewhat restless yet directionless, and it could be a year of some obscurity. Months 9 to 12 (that is, the last 4 months of the year) may be most active.

Cardinal signs generally indicate new initiatives, physical activity, and some impulsiveness.

Fixed signs can indicate some clinging to things the way they are, and some inertia.

Mutable signs predominating suggests some sociability, indecisiveness, procrastination, and scattering of energies.

Hemisphere Emphasis:

If the east side of the chart is strong, the individual feels in control of his or her destiny, makes decisions, and may feel empowered. If the west side of the chart is strong, the individual may feel he or she doesn't have (or doesn't exercise) his or her free will.

If most planets are above the horizon (with the possible exception of a heavy emphasis on the twelfth house), there is a focus on external

events, public life, and social and business concerns.

If below the horizon, this can be a more introspective and subjective year. A Note on Forecasting and Worry

There may also be a tendency to worry about "heavy" planets in a prominent position in a Solar Return chart cast for the future. When I was a young(er!) adult, I remember taking a look at my Solar Return chart for the upcoming year, and worrying about SR Pluto conjunct the Midheaven, tightly squaring SR Moon in the 7th house. In that same SR chart, Sun, Venus, and Mars were all in the 8th house. The chart looked ominous to me! What happened that year was certainly life-changing, as the direction of my career changed, I moved, and I met a man who I later married, but none of these things, at the time, were things I considered negative. In hindsight, I look back to that time and think perhaps I was a little hasty with my decision-making, but none of the events of that year warranted the kind of worry I put myself through.

Whenever we use astrological forecasting methods, it is always important to remember that we should really be doing these analyses in order to better prepare ourselves. We should try to avoid getting ourselves into a tizzy over things that "might be". Always keep in mind the idea that we have free will and we have choices. It's perhaps easier said than done, but looking into the past and applying "forecasting" techniques on the years behind us can certainly help alleviate some of the worry. If we see that we survived a year with an ominous-looking Solar Return chart, it is easier to relax about the upcoming ones.

Solar Return Ascendant Signs

The Solar Return Ascendant sign shows your overall temperament, attitude, and approach to life in the year ahead.

In Aries, you may take initiative in the area of life where Aries falls in your natal chart. You could also be impatient or impulsive in this area. This is a year of opportunities, in that you will be more adventurous and you will have the courage to make changes. You are more likely to attract new circumstances, people, and experiences into your life. Your approach to life is more direct than usual, and others might complain that you are more self-absorbed than usual! Decision-making is quick this year, and you are likely to be more physically active.

In Taurus, domestic issues and finances will be on your mind. This is a year of overall stability. Your approach to life is markedly conservative and practical. You are resistant to making big changes, and you are skeptical of new initiatives. You are generally content to leave things as they are, and you are not inclined to seek out brand new experiences (or people!). Inertia and resistance to making changes may characterize the period. You have the power to attract this year, especially through patience. You may also feel the need to have more beauty in your life, via your surroundings and perhaps with regards to a desire to improve your appearance.

In Gemini, you are outgoing, sociable, and very curious. Your attention span may be short, however, and you might have your finger in too many pies. Your interests are vast, and it can be hard finishing projects you complete before your attention moves elsewhere! You open yourself up to many possibilities, and perhaps too many. You may find it hard to keep commitments.

In Cancer, you wear your emotions on your sleeve this year. More sensitive than usual, you have your eye on security. Your attention turns to your home front, your family, and

domestic issues. You may be more introspective than usual. Oversensitivity and defensiveness may be a problem. Security is a driving force this year. As Cancer's ruler, the Moon holds important clues as to what area of life in which you may encounter instability and change, and why you feel protective of your sense of security as a result.

In Leo, your urge to create is strong. There may be more involvement with children or especially romantic inclinations. Your physical appearance and your manner become very important, especially since Leo is on the first house and it rules the "star" of the Solar Return chart--the Sun. You may be more dramatic and expressive this year, or this could point to a focus on children, hobbies, or other Leo-ruled areas of life, depending on your personal inclinations as well as your life circumstances. I had Leo rising in my Solar Return charts in the years I had two of my children (both born with Leo Ascendants), for example. Be sure to look to the house position of the Sun for areas of life where you have a strong opportunity to express yourself and your creativity.

In Virgo, focus is on your work, your habits, your health, and your routines. It may be a rather unspectacular year--a year when you may be caught up in making adjustments to your life and/or worrying about problems. It can be a rather mundane year (unless your Sun or Ascendant is Virgo natally), but one that is quite busy. You may feel like you are doing a lot of preparing but don't exactly know what it is you are preparing for. Mercury's placement can provide some clues as to which areas of life require adjustments.

In Libra, this is a year when you find the need to compromise, deliberate, and accommodate. Your goal is to find balance and achieve harmony. Venus' position can provide clues as to which areas of life prompt you to feel this need. There can be a strong focus on relationships and partnerships, or you can

begin a new partnership that demands a lot of your attention. You may find yourself accommodating or appeasing others much of your time, and you have to watch that you don't become too compromising or overly concerned with not rocking the boat. Interestingly, this Ascendant can be present in a year when people marry as much as one in which people divorce. In many cases, it can be a very happy year--one in which the individual feels like life is running very smoothly, likely because he or she is keeping peace at all costs.

In Scorpio, powerful feelings come to the surface. It can be a very introspective year when you cut off the areas of your life that seem to be superficial or unsatisfying on a deep level. It can be a year when you alienate others with a seemingly hardhearted manner, or when you break friendships or cut off specific social activities. Much depends on the natal house that is brought to the SR Ascendant. It could also be a year when you are extremely focused on specific things, possibly to the point of obsession. Whatever the case may be, you have donned a strong persona in order to deal effectively with the changes that you know need to take place in your life.

In Sagittarius, you feel more adventurous and possibly restless this year. This may be because you have been feeling limited or "caged in" recently, and your desire is to break out of that rut. You may not know where it is exactly that you want to go, but a restless feeling is present. In some cases, legal issues need to be attended to. You may attract support from others, or have a reason to be more hopeful and optimistic about life. Jupiter's position can hold some clues as to what exactly is feeding your spirit, giving you a new lease on life, or providing you with hopefulness. You have to be careful that you don't overestimate your capabilities this year. Try not to gloss over important details, such as the bills that need to be paid.

In Capricorn, you focus on your responsibilities, career or business concerns, and the material world. You may feel a real need to buckle down this year, and Saturn's position can provide clues as to why and where this need is coming from. You become aware of a need for more control or self-control this year. You may feel undervalued and could don a more serious persona this year. Be careful not to let responsibility turn into negative, black-and-white thinking.

In Aquarius, your need for independence and individuality is strong this year. You may break out of your shell this year and express a "new you". Some level of emotional detachment and stability is likely. If you are not normally stubborn or individualistic, people around you might be surprised by your behavior this year. Be careful not to alienate those close to you as you branch out and feel the need to express your individuality.

In Pisces, this could be a very dreamy, possibly directionless year when you tend to prefer to live in a dream world rather than attend to picky details of everyday life. It could be a time when you hide yourself away a little, work on something behind the scenes, or have a greater need for solitude. It could also be a real "escapist" year. Something hidden or private may occupy a good portion of your thoughts and your time this year. Some restlessness is likely, and you may have some concerns about what lies ahead of you, which could be at the root of your need to escape.

Of course, the natal chart always has to be taken into account. Nobody "becomes" a Pisces rising for just one year, for example, so the natal Ascendant should be considered. Also, if the Solar Return Ascendant is in the same sign as the natal Ascendant, it promises to be a power year. If the SR Ascendant is the sign of your Descendant, you may feel somewhat at the mercy of others.

Solar Return Ascendant in Aries

This year will bring new initiatives and projects. You will feel the desire to undertake new enterprises and take a new path. You will also feel impatient with your usual daily routine. If you are calm and slow by nature, this influence will make you more energetic, but if you are already a very active person, you will become more aggressive, perhaps even explosive and argumentative. You will definitely be energized this year. It is up to you to find ways to utilize this energy and drive in the best way.

If you would like to make a radical change in your life, or just want to assert your individuality more, this is the year to do it. The Mars energy will give you more courage and the will to take action, but you can also be more prone to accidents because you act hastily or impulsively, not thinking before you leap. Your own personal needs are more important to you at this time than the needs of others. You will also feel the desire to impose your opinions and will on others to a greater degree than usual, even to the point of strongly opposing them.
