ABSTRACT

Husna, Rifiana Nurul. 2015. A Correlation between Learning Styles and Reading Comprehension of SMA Negeri 1 Nalumsari Jepara Students in Academic Year 2015/2016. Skripsi. English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muria Kudus University. Advisor: (i) Fitri Budi Suryani, S.S., M.Pd., (ii) Fajar Kartika, S.S., M.Hum.

Key words: learning styles, reading comprehension, correlation. Learning styles is an important element which influences learning process as well as achievement. The characteristic of each student can enrich students’ achievement especially in reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is the process where the readers understand the contents of the text. Comprehension is the purpose of reading. The students can get the message by reading a text if they comprehend the text. The teacher can help the students to focus in their best learning styles to make students enjoy in learning activity. In fact, the students who got good score in reading comprehension, mostly they were good in learning styles, and also vice versa.

This research is aimed at finding out whether learning styles significantly correlates reading comprehension of SMA Negeri 1 Nalumsari Jepara Students in academic year 2015/2016.

The present research is a correlational research. The sample is XI IPA 1 class which consists of 38 students. The sample is taken by random sampling technique. Test and questionnaire are used as the instrument of this research. The test consists of 30 items to get the data of students’ reading comprehension and questionnaire consists of 30 items to get the students’ learning styles.

All the data gained in this research was analyzed by using the formulation of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. According to the result of analysis and statistical calculation, it is found that rxy is 0.671 and rt is 0.3160 with the degree of freedom (df=N-1) is 37. By comparing the values of rxy and rt, it can be got that rxy is higher than rt and the statistic hypothesis is states: If rxy > rt significance: there is correlation and Ha accepted. If rxy < rt non signification: there is no correlation and Ha is rejected and Ho is accepted. The result of hyphotesis is rxy higher than rt. So the writer concluded that learning styles significantly correlates reading comprehension of SMA Negeri 1 Nalumsari Jepara students in academic year 2015/2016.

Based on the result of the research, the students should study more and students choose their best way, technique, or strategy to master and to advance their English. They can ask their English teacher when they have difficulties in comprehending English. Then, teacher as facilitator must be creative, innovative, and communicative when teaching English. So the students can learn well and enjoy in teaching learning process.

ABSTRAKSI

Husna, Rifiana Nurul. 2015. Korelasi antara Gaya Belajar dan Pemahaman Membaca oleh Siswa SMA Negeri 1 Nalumsari Jepara Tahun Pelajaran 2015/2016 Skripsi. Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Muria Kudus. Pembimbing: (i) Fitri Budi Suryani, S.S., M.Pd., (ii) Fajar Kartika, S.S., M.Hum.

ketika mengajarkan bahasa Inggris.
