Brevetti sugli smartphone 5G: stima di 20$ per smartphone di royalties, il 90% a Qualcomm (al 50%), Ericsson e Nokia Cifre importanti e un ridotto numero di attori

5G handsets will generate almost $20 billion annually in global royalties for intellectual property (IP) holders in 2025 according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics. Strategy Analytics’ Emerging Device Technologies research concludes that three companies, Ericsson, Nokia and Qualcomm will take the lion’s share of those royalties. Qualcomm, Ericsson and Nokia will capture over 90% of total 5G smartphone royalties in 2025, according to Strategy Analytics research. Cumulative 5G Royalties will pass $55B. While the first 5G smartphone launches are still months away, key IPR holders have begun to reveal their licensing rates for the key technologies that will power 5G devices. “Ericsson and Nokia combined will take 35% of total global 5G handset royalties in 2025,” says Senior Analyst Ville-Petteri Ukonaho. “Meanwhile Qualcomm will take over half.” Strategy Analytics research shows that while Ericsson and Nokia hope to charge $5 and $3.50 per device, respectively, Qualcomm will take a percentage

of the device’s price. “The average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones will steadily decline over time, but even in 2025, 5G devices will still be three times more expensive than non-5G handsets,” says Emerging Device Technologies Director Ken Hyers.

The French telco aims to launch full 5G commercial services in 2020 Fixed wireless access technology will be the main driver of French telecom group Orange’s 5G rollout, the group’s SVP of quality operations and performance Roberto Kung said in a keynote presentation during Huawei Operational Transformation Forum 2018, which was held in Munich this week.

The executive said that the initial goal of FWA deployment will be to close current fixed broadband coverage gaps. Kung said Orange is initially focusing on consumer services because it needs more capacity. However, in the future, the telco also plans to start considering use cases beyond the consumer market, including expanding its mobile broadband coverage and deploying massive IoT services. the firm is targeting 2020 for the full commercial launch of the new technology.

AT&T's Gilbert: AI Critical to 5G Infrastructure (and open source in Telecoms) Una bella sintesi di come AT&T prova modi diversi per fare leva sul software open source sia partendo da progetti interni e poi andando in open source oppure al contrario facendo partire diettamente progetti Open Source con partner strategici e poi portandone i risultati in azienda.

Artificial intelligence is playing a major role in the buildout of physical infrastructure for 5G and its importance in that area will only grow, says the AT&T expert who is the governing board chair of the new Linux Foundation umbrella organization devoted to AI, the LF Deep Learning Foundation. Mazin Gilbert is vice president of Advanced Technology and Systems at AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) and has been very involved in previous AT&T open source efforts at the Linux Foundation , including the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) . But as he points out, the need to move quickly on the AI front led AT&T to turn to the open source

community much earlier in the process than it did with ONAP. (See AT&T VP: Using AI to Hyper-Automate Processes .) And that's being driven in part by the urgency of scaling out physical infrastructure -- cellsites including small cells and micro cells, as well as white boxes -- to support 5G, Gilbert says. "Today, we have 35,000 microcells, we are going to 100,000 microcells building out 5G and more," he comments in an interview. "Where do you put those? What building? What pole? It takes a year to put one of those out today. That cannot scale. The question is how do you make this mainstream, reduce the time cycle, and take into account traffic changes?" The answer, Gilbert says, is using machine learning and artificial intelligence to "redo completely the network planning process." To do that, AT&T is building a virtual world to be able to determine, "on the spot" where a microcell is needed and how it should be configured.

In a landmark move, German telco Deutsche Telekom will offer its IPTV platform Entertain TV as an OTT version from autumn 2018. The offer can then be booked without fixed-line broadband internet access from Telekom for the first time. Entertain TV will be available as an app for devices with operating systems iOS and Android. The content will mirror the IPTV version. The functions time-shift, restart and replay will, however, remain reserved for IPTV customers. Entertain TV customers will also soon have direct access

to series and films from Amazon Prime Video. The Amazon content will also be accessible via the Entertain TV search function. Netflix has been part of Deutsche Telekom’s IPTV platform since 2014.

Amazon e Tennis 21- Fault! Prime draws fire for US Open coverage Amazon ha comprato i diritti del tennis in USA ma come DAZN è criticata ... mandare video sport live su IP è un tough job

Amazon Prime has been deluged with so many complaints about its coverage of the US Open that it has stopped viewers from posting any more bad reviews. Amazon’s $40 million five-year deal to broadcast the US Open to the UK – its first exclusive broadcast of a sports event – was meant to showcase its streaming prowess and prove it can match traditional broadcasters and become a credible home for live sport. However, the online giant has been inundated with complaints about a host of problems including the picture and sound quality of its streaming service and an inability to record or rewind matches. “There is no replay option, no ability to record [and] the picture quality is very poor,” commented one unhappy fan. “It’s like going back in time 25 years.” Others urged Amazon to “give tennis back to Sky and Eurosport”, which both used to broadcast the US Open in the UK before Amazon snapped up the exclusive rights, reports The Guardian.

Amazon Video e Tennis 2: Prime US Open up to 44 secs behind broadcast Sport live su OTT Video … Non ci siamo ancora ... Phenix, the video solutions provider has revealed that Amazon Prime’s US Open coverage in the UK is running up to 44 seconds behind the live TV coverage in the US. The global testing team also found that two devices using the same WiFi connection were 32 seconds out of sync, despite being in the same room. Alongside the latency testing, Phenix also polled British sports fans and found that 53 per cent would prefer to watch the US Open and other tennis Grand Slams on terrestrial TV, with only 6 per cent saying they would consider watching on Netflix or Amazon either now or in the future. The research also highlighted that 59 per cent of Brits are frustrated if they overhear the score in a game they are watching due to a delay in their live stream. Consumer confidence in live sports video streaming appears to be low with 23% of tennis fans willing to resort to radio coverage if the quality of a video live stream was too poor and 16% don’t think the delays and buffering associated with streaming are worth the hassle. The quality needs to be high right from the beginning as 21% of Brits would stop watching a live stream in the first minute if the experience was poor. Many will be put off by the experience, especially if the feed on their TV is 30 seconds behind the feed on their phone. This delay has implications for in-game betting as well as fans potentially receiving a game ruining message from a friend with a different stream.” “This is not an insurmountable problem, live trivia apps have shown that tens of thousands of people can not only receive a real-time broadcast with under 0.5 seconds of latency, but that the experience can also be interactive too. For today’s streaming providers to be taken seriously by sports fans around the world, they need to use the most up-to-date technology and provide a viewing experience which goes beyond what regular TV can do,” Corenthal concluded.

Chicago installs over 76,000 LED smart street fixtures in one year Il più grande progetto al mondo di sostituzione illuminazione pubblica a LED! Durerà un anno

The city’s smart lighting initiative stipulates the replacement of 270,000 lights across Chicago Chicago has already installed over 76,000 new LED smart streetlight fixtures in each of the city’s 50 wards in the first year of the city’s smart lighting program. Progress so far on the projects puts Chicago tenth in the list of the biggest smart-city lighting deployments. The four-year modernization program is being

implemented by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and will replace 270,000 of Chicago’s street, alley and viaduct lights with LED fixtures. By switching to LED streetlights, Chicago expects to cut its streetlight electricity costs by more than half, yielding savings of approximately $100 million over 10 years. Utility savings from the first year of the program are estimated to be up to $1 million. The new lights, which are owned and operated by the City of Chicago, consume 50-75% less electricity than HPS lights, generating significant electricity cost savings that will offset the cost of the modernization project.

Smart Tags Add Touch Controls to Ordinary Objects Circuiti elettronici prodotti con una normale stampante a bassissimo costo e usati come etichette possono rendere "connesso" qualunque oggetto

By using reflected Wi-Fi signals, a chipless smart tag can put touch-responsive controls on almost anything Despite the modern world’s fixation with touchscreen smartphones and tablets, most homes and businesses remain cluttered with objects that lack any digital interfaces. Now, those ordinary objects could get an upgrade thanks to new smart tags that harness reflected Wi-Fi signals to add touch-based controls to any surface. The idea of an inexpensive tag capable of transforming any object into a smart device is not necessarily new. But most cheap smart tags

that lack batteries or complicated electronics can only perform simple functions, such as passively storing and sharing identifying information about an object.

BMW unveils own personal assistant for the car, home Sistema sviluppato in house da una nuova business unit di BMW ... interessante che alla fine i car maker siano arrivati prima delle utility e della maggior parte dei Telco nel mercato dei personal assistant, appena dopo i GAFAM German car manufacturer BMW Group has unveiled its own intelligent personal assistant, The service will be launched in March 2019 and respond to the prompt “Hey BMW”. Drivers will then be able to operator their car and access its functions and information just by voice. One unique feature: people will be able to choose their own name for the assistant. Another feature: it will be available outside the car. This personal assistant will be an expert on all car functions, provide location services and safety features but also act like a general assistant, integrated with Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business. It will also be able to identify a song currently playing or search stations for a desired type of music. Outside the car, people will be able use its services at home with the help of a smart speaker or outside in general with their smartphone. The BMW will in addition be compatible with other voice assistants beyond Amazon Alexa, linking to other ecosystems. It will be able to learn routines and habits, learn the driver’s preferences and get familiar with favoured settings such as heat seating or where home is. People will be able to ask it general questions (“Hey BMW, what’s the meaning of life?”) and expect smart responses to certain prompts. For example, saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will have the assistant adjust temperature inside the car accordingly. It will also be able to respond to questions such as “Is the oil level ok?” and statements like “I’m tired”. This will trigger a vitality programme that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more awake. In the future, the assistant will be able to give fuel-saving driving tips or think ahead and warn drivers as necessary. It will be able to alert the driver to problems (“tyre pressure is low”), remind the driver of service appointments and even arrange an appointment. The BMW assistant is powered by the company’s Open Mobility Cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) with the new BMW operating system 7.0. Its functions and skills will be constantly expanded with regular updates carried out either on the smartphone and in-car by Remote Software Upgrade. These will go into the portable, digital customer profile, the BMW ID.

Cancellare il contante non ha funzionato per l’economia: In India, Has Demonetization Been Defeated? Fallimento del tentativo governativo di ridurre il contante e passare al digitale: si è ridotta tutta

l'economia e il digitale non è cresciuto!! When you want to know something: Follow the money. In India, then, to find out how well, or not so well, demonetization efforts are playing out, follow the money. News comes this week, per India’s central bank, that cash still is king — more than ever. In fact, the value of cash grew 37.7 percent during a period that was supposed to reduce reliance on paper notes. That measure extends to March 2018 and covers the preceding 12 months, so

Commento [BR1]:

9

might the true tally have swelled even through the last few months? The demonetization effort traces its genesis to 2016, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi put forth policy that took the largest banknotes in circulation out of the system — 500 rupee and 1,000 rupee bills. The aim was to root out corruption and tax evasion and get some tax revenue in government coffers, as those with stashes of the biggest notes would have to pay up. With 86 percent of the currency circulating at the time tied to those larger denominations, the impact was significant. The central bank this month said that it had gotten roughly 99.3 percent of those devalued notes back, which means that people gave up those notes in quick order. Fortune offered up a summation in the words of Ashutosh Datar, an economist based in India who told AFP that “the report shows that demonetization has failed in its primary objective.” There seems to be some consensus that growth in gross domestic product may have suffered in the wake of the government’s efforts, though there is no official tally as of yet.

Uber Cash Mobile Wallet Launches Moneta a circuito chiuso in uber ... quando arrivarenno quelle degli altri GAFAM?

The transportation company that innovated payments by delivering the Uber experience is at it again — this time, by making it easier and more rewarding for its users to pay for products and services inside its growing ecosystem. Uber Cash launched today (Sept. 5), providing a closed-loop payment network that lets consumers easily add funds to its stored value account. Those consumers then use Uber Cash to pay for things across the Uber ecosystem, which today includes bike sharing via JUMP Bikes, food delivery via Uber Eats and ridesharing via Uber

and its many variants on that theme. Uber Cash will also become the home for Uber’s gift cards, its Visa Local Offers credits, loyalty and card rewards and redemptions.

Approfondimento della settimana

La parola della settimana: AIOps, o "artificia intelligence for it operations" What is AIOps (artificial intelligence for IT operations)? Artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps) is an umbrella term for the use of big data analytics, machine learning (ML) and other artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to automate the identification and resolution of common information technology (IT) issues. The systems, services and applications in a large enterprise produce immense volumes of log and performance data. AIOps uses this data to monitor assets and gain visibility into dependencies without and outside of IT systems.

10

An AIOps platform should bring three capabilities to the enterprise: 1. Automate routine practices 2. Recognize serious issues faster and with greater accuracy than humans 3. Streamline the interactions between data center groups and teams. AIOps uses a conglomeration of various AI strategies, including data output, aggregation, analytics, algorithms, automation and orchestration, machine learning and visualization. Most of these technologies are reasonably well-defined and mature.
