Probably the number one issue for me over the years has been dealing with customers / customer service. I have learned a lot and find that the experience has helped me in dealing with my building customers. So… here we go! Dealing with customer complaints. Wouldn’t it be great if everything always went perfect and our customers understood everything we do?!! Not in the real world right? Over the years with my martial arts school I have dealt with thousands of parents. Dealing with a disgruntled parent can be tricky business! Sometimes I or my staff makes mistakes. Other times it is simply a case of confusion or unrealistic expectations. To be honest, I find that a mistake on our part is much easier to deal with. A simple apology, a refund, or some type of good will offer can go a long way. e tough situation is when you know that the problem isn’t your fault. my ViewSharon Westerholm, EOI cannot believe it

is already December. Where did this last year go? I was either hav-ing too much fun, or too busy to notice the year zip by. Our next meeting will be held

December 8th at the Speak Easy. Bruce Kunz, from the Kunz Law Office in Perham will be our guest speaker. He will be talking about liens. This should be of interest to many of you, as I am sure most use them in your businesses. Mailers for the 2012 Home and Garden Show are out, and quite a few booths have been booked. Don’t be snoozing so you don’t get your spot.

Hopefully sometime this month, we can start work on the Playhouse that we are going to build with the profits going to the Boys and Girls Club. We need to find a place to build it and have another day for painting and making it one of a kind.

It’s official - the Annual Banquet and Christmas party is scheduled for Janu-ary 20th at Cactus Gardens in Perham. Social to start at 6:00 p.m. After din-ner we will go Moonlight Bowling.

We are still looking for board mem-bers for the coming year. Shaun En-gelsrud from Kinetico has agreed to get on the ballot. We still need 3 more and some must be builders. If you are interested in serving the Association by being on our board of directors, please call the office.

Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas filled with Peace and Joy and a Blessed New Year.

Save the date! The fifth annual statewide BAM Convention is Friday February 24, 2012 at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency Hotel. Check out the website for details, pictures and video from last year and to register: www.bamn.org/convention.

New this year BAM is partnering with the Builders Association of the Twin Cities bringing you three events in two days.

Thursday February 23rd is BATC’s MN Build-ers Show, formerly known as BATC’s Builders and Remodelers Product & Service Show, from 3-8pm at the Minneapolis Convention Center. For more information visit: www.mnbuildersshow.com.

Thursday evening from 8-11pm is a Casino Night event co-hosted by BAM and BATC at the Convention Center. Providing more benefit to as-sociate sponsors, Casino Night is open to build-ers, remodelers, architects and interior designers only. Associates are invited to attend as a sponsor; opportunities are available for every level. Atten-dance is free.

Friday February 24th is the BAM Convention starting at 7:30am including breakfast, the annual BAM Board Meeting and keynote speaker Dr. El-

liot Eisenberg during lunch followed by the BAM Government Relations meeting, guests welcome.

Then the fun really gets going with the Hospi-tality Suites, cocktail reception and silent auction and Awards Banquet, Presidential Installation and dance with band So Big.

Sponsorship options for Casino Night event and the Convention have been expanded so there are more ways to be involved at any level.

For details visit http://bamn.org/convention/sponsors.html. As a sponsor your company is put in front of over 3,000 BAM members through print, electronic and social media as well as having the unique opportunity of interacting personally at the event.

The theme for all three events is Mardi Gras and the celebration is about to begin. From the awards and keynote speaker, to the food and the band, if you’ve been to the Convention you know it's the year's biggest event. If you haven't been, what are you waiting for?

Sponsor, network, showcase new products and join in the fun!

MEMBERS MEET WITH STATE REPRESENTATIVE KENT EKEN ON NO-VEMBER 2ND. Lake Region Builders Association members met with State Representatives Kent Eken and Mark Murdock to discuss is-sues relating to the building industry, especially concerns with the Sprinkler Bill that Governor Dayton vetoed. We explained that with the additional costs involved, it could increase the cost of building a rural home from $5,000 to $14,000 dollars. We also discussed how slow the new home construction recovery is in this area. At-tending the meeting were Bryan Schoenberger, Nick Green, Perry Nodsle, Sharon Westerholm and Brenda Eidenschink.

Sorry Mike. Congratulations

Greg. (It paid for his dinner

and then some!)

JacKpOT WiNNeR!

ARE YOU DOING BUSINESS WITH MEMBERS?In the tough economy that we are in, it is more important than ever, to use the services of our members. Our associates

help keep the association going, with their membership, their volunteering on our projects, the Home Show and other events. Likewise for the associates, if they need the use of a contractor or can recommend a contractor, it is important for them to use one of our fellow members. If you are using services from non-members, encourage them to become a member of our association. This benefits everyone!!!

JACKPOT DRAWING WINNERS WILL BE LISTED MONTHLY

Will YOU be a WiNNeR???SPONSORS FOR THE DRAWING ARE

MIDWEST BANK AND THE BUILDERS GROUPYou must attend the meetings in order to be eligible. Every monthly meeting except March, (No meeting in the Home Show month) we will draw for $40.00. Initially, every name goes in a pot. And each meeting you attend will have another slip with your name in the pot. You must be there to win. So far, our sponsor for this drawing is The Builders Group. We are in the process of find-ing one more sponsor. Our meetings are a great place to network, talk to your friends, and most of all, learn about things that affect your business and now you could win some money too. Should the name drawn not be there, the $40.00 gets put in the next months pot, so you would have a chance at a larger amount. There are over 200 names accumulated in the drawing box.

Regarding other uses of the license number, DLI recommends the following: • Website information -- as soon as possible. • Printed materials (letterhead, business cards, etc.) -- upon reorder • Advertising materials -- upon reorder • Vehicles and other equipment -- upon replacement You can see the Departments notice with the above language at this website: www.dli.mn.gov/CCLD/ccld_license_changes.asp

Grants for Fall-Protection Contractors can apply now for a safety grant of up $10,000 to help them comply with Minnesota OSHA’s new residential fall-protection guidelines. In June 2011, Minnesota OSHA Compliance began en-forcing 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13). The standard states each employee engaged in residential construction activities six feet (1.8 m) or more above lower levels shall be protected by a guardrail system, safety net system or personal fall-arrest system unless another provision in paragraph (b) of the section provides for an alternate fall protection measure. The Safety Grant Program, administered by Minnesota OSHA Workplace Safety Consultation, awards funds up to $10,000 to qualifying employers for projects designed to reduce the risk of in-jury and illness to their workers. The employer must provide at least $1 in project costs for every dollar awarded. No grant will be awarded for more than half the amount of the approved project.

For further information, visit www.dli.mn.gov/WSC/Grants.asp. Interested applicants can also contact the safety grants administra-tor at (651) 284-5162, 1-800-731-7232 or [email protected]. Information about the new residential fallprotection guidelines is available online at www.dli.mn.gov/OSHA/ResFallProtect.asp.

my ViewSharon Westerholm, EOI cannot believe it

is already December.

I can’t believe it is December already! Hope-fully everyone has their outdoor projects wrapped up and have headed indoors! If not, I hope you have some warm Carhartt’s and good boots! Personally I love snow and winter sports. Most likely I will be in the Montana Mountains skiing as you read this article.

This month I would like to change it up and write about something different. As you may or may not be aware I have owned a professional martial arts school in Little Falls MN for the past 16 years. The tough situation is when you know that the problem isn’t your fault. Most likely the customer is confused or has unrealistic expecta-tions. Can you believe a parent of a 5 year old child can have unrealistic expectations?! (arghh!!) So… what to do? I have found the number one technique for this situation is very simple. Here it is… LISTEN WITHOUT INTERUPTING! That’s right; I keep my mouth shut and let them get their concern off their chest. More times than not, simply letting them express their concern will greatly defuse the situation. What works even better is for me to reverberate to the customer what their issue or complaint is. This doesn’t necessarily mean that I agree with their problem. It just says that I am listening. This also allows me to find the root of the problem and find out where the confusion is. Once I know what the issue is then I can help the customer to understand. A key ingredient is to keep your cool and leave your emotions at rest. If you let your emotions run wild, or focus on showing the customer you are right and they are wrong, expect the worse! As human beings, most of us just want to be understood. We want to know that someone cares. So the next time you have a disgruntled customer give it a try. Let them “get it all out.” Sure, sometimes it can be a tough pill to swallow. In most cases, however, it will be much easier in the end. Happy Holidays and stay safe out there!
